Michael bolted from Lucy’s kitchen and walked back to the small house. He stood by the kitchen window, hoping against hope that Lois might change her mind and cancel her date. The sound of the engine in the driveway, however, shattered the last shreds of hope. He slammed his fist against the door then flexed his fingers to ease the pain.
Pappou looked over the book he was reading and observed his grandson’s bleak face without comment. Lola took a hesitant step toward Michael, saw that he had no interest in her, and waddled back to her basket.
