Chapter One: The Scent of FateThe sky hung low with thick storm clouds, the scent of rain clinging to the wind. Royce stood on the training platform, her breath steady despite the sweat clinging to her skin. Her opponent, a young warrior named Asher, shifted uneasily in front of her, shaking out his arms as if it would do him any good. She smirked. “You sure you want to do this again?”Asher huffed, rolling his shoulders. “You got lucky last time.”Royce didn’t waste time arguing. Instead, she lunged, dodging his attempt at a grab and sweeping his legs out from under him. He hit the slick wooden platform with a thud, and before he could react, she was on top of him, her forearm pressed firmly against his throat. His eyes widened. He struggled for only a second before sighing in defeat. “Alright, alright. I yield.”Royce grinned, pushing off of him and offering her hand. He took it reluctantly.“I’m never sparring with you again,” he muttered.“You say that every time,” she teased, stepping back to stretch. From the edge of the training ring, a familiar whistle cut through the air. Royce turned to find her older brother, Killian, watching with a smirk. Tall, broad-shouldered, and exuding the quiet confidence of an alpha in the making, he had always been the ideal heir to their father’s title. In just two months, he would officially take his place as leader of the Shadow Moon Pack.“Still scaring off potential mates, I see,” Killian said, stepping forward.Royce scoffed. “If they can’t handle a strong woman, they aren’t worth my time.”Killian sighed, rubbing his jaw. “Royce, you know why this gathering is important. It’s not just about me becoming Alpha. It’s about unity. Strengthening the region. Finding mates.”She bristled at the last word. “I don’t need a mate.”“That’s not up to you.”The words struck a nerve. Royce knew he wasn’t trying to be cruel, but the truth of it made her stomach twist. Their world was governed by fate. By the pull of the bond that could forge an unbreakable connection between two wolves. It was something every unmated wolf in the region longed for.But not her.She refused to let fate decide her future.Yet, deep down, something restless stirred within her.Something she didn’t yet understand.
