Chapter 1 - First Meeting
"Come on, Mark! Loosen up!" Jayson nudged him, a broad smile plastered on his face as the pulsing bass of the music filled the crowded club.
"I'm fine," Mark murmured, his eyes scanning the room. His wolf, however, was anything but fine. It prowled restlessly beneath his skin, a low growl rumbling in his chest. The scent of sweat, alcohol, and perfume washed over him in waves, none of which appealed to his heightened senses. This was the last place he wanted to be tonight, but here he was, coerced into a night of supposed fun by his insistent packmates.
In the sea of flashing lights and gyrating bodies, a flash of red hair caught his attention. His gaze zeroed in on the woman, Emma, who was laughing with a group of friends. She was petite, yet radiant, her energy drawing him in like a magnet. His wolf's growl grew louder, insistent. It was her. His mate. The one he'd been searching for. But she was human, not a wolf like him. This revelation shook him to his core.
Jayson noticed his distraction. "You've got your eye on someone, buddy?"
Mark nodded, his eyes still glued to Emma. She was surrounded by a protective cocoon of friends, all chattering and laughing, making it difficult to navigate through the crowd. The wolf in him craved to claim her, but the man knew better. He couldn't just barge in, not with her human friends so obviously enjoying themselves.
"Who is she?" Jayson leaned in, his voice barely audible over the din.
"My... mate" Mark finally managed to say, the word feeling foreign on his tongue.
"Your what?" Jayson's eyebrows shot up in surprise. He followed Mark's gaze to the group of humans, his eyes widening when he realized who Mark was referring to. "You've got to be kidding me. That's your mate? A human"
Mark nodded again, unable to tear his gaze away from Emma. She looked so vibrant, so alive. His wolf howled in agreement, the intensity of the bond already a living force inside him. He felt it in every fiber of his being, the overwhelming need to claim her, to make her his.
"Well, I'll be damned" Jayson said, his voice filled with a mix of disbelief and excitement. "You're serious"
Ben and Alex, who had been chuckling at a joke a few feet away, felt the sudden shift in the air and turned towards Mark and Jayson. They could sense the tension, the raw power emanating from Mark's body. It was clear something significant had just occurred.
"What's going on?" Ben asked, his eyes searching Mark's face.
"I've found her" Mark said, his voice low and gruff. The urgency in his tone was palpable.
Ben and Alex exchanged glances, sensing the gravity of Mark's words. They stepped closer, curiosity piquing their interest. "Your mate?" Ben asked, his voice carrying a hint of skepticism. Mark nodded solemnly, his eyes never leaving Emma's figure. The bond was undeniable, a force that pounded in his chest like a second heartbeat.
Alex leaned in, his voice dropping to a whisper, "But she's human, right?"
"Yeah" Mark's jaw clenched, the reality of the situation sinking in. "But she's mine"
Jayson slapped him on the back. "Well, what are you waiting for?"
Mark took a deep breath, steeling himself for the challenge ahead. "I'll go talk to her" he said, his voice tight with tension.
"Hold up" Alex said, placing a hand on Mark's arm. "You can't just go up to a human and tell her she's your mate. That's not exactly the best pick-up line"
Ben nodded in agreement. "Let's think this through. You've got to be smart about this. She won't understand the full extent of it, and you could end up scaring her"
Mark knew they were right, but his wolf was impatient. It took all of his self-control to keep from charging over to her. "What do you suggest" he asked, his voice a low growl.
Jayson thought for a moment. "Why don't you just start with a dance?" He grinned mischievously. "It's a club, after all. Just go over, ask her to dance. If she says no, no harm done. But if she says yes..." He winked.
Mark's wolf balked at the idea of playing games, but the human part of him knew his friends had a point. He took a deep breath, trying to compose himself. He approached Emma's group, his heart hammering in his chest. The music was loud, but he could hear her laughter like it was the only sound in the room.
He tapped her on the shoulder, and she turned to face him, her smile dimming slightly as she took in the unfamiliar face. He opened his mouth to speak, but the words lodged in his throat. Instead, he offered her his hand and nodded towards the dance floor. For a moment, she looked at him with uncertainty, but then her eyes lit up, and she placed her hand in his.
The music was fast, the rhythm pounding in his ears as they moved to the beat. His wolf urged him to claim her, but Mark held back, trying to keep the primal instinct at bay. They danced, bodies swaying together, and with each step, the bond between them grew stronger. He could feel her heart racing, her pulse quickening. And when she looked up at him, her eyes sparkling with curiosity and a hint of excitement, his control slipped.
He leaned in, unable to resist the pull, and kissed her. It was like a bolt of lightning, the connection between them electric. Her lips were soft, tasting faintly of strawberries and mint. He deepened the kiss, his arms wrapping around her waist, pulling her closer. But the wolf in him was too eager, too possessive. It was a dance of passion and dominance, a silent declaration of ownership that he couldn't hold back.
As the music swelled, Mark felt his fangs extend, a primal urge surging through him. He bit down on the tender flesh of her neck, marking her as his own. The metallic tang of blood filled his mouth, and he felt her stiffen in shock before pushing him away with a cry of pain. The room spun, and the world around them grew quiet, the only sound the thundering of his own heart.
Emma's hand flew to her neck, her eyes widening in horror as she felt the sticky wetness. She looked down at her fingers and saw the blood. The room swirled around her as she tried to process what had just happened. The laughter and chatter of her friends seemed to fade into the background as she took a stumbling step back.
"What did you do to me?" she gasped, her voice trembling.
Mark's eyes snapped open, his pupils dilating with the realization of what he had done. He had claimed her without her consent, without her knowing the truth. The room was still, the music a distant throb, as he watched the color drain from Emma's face. The smell of fear and pain washed over him, and his wolf howled in regret.
Panic took hold of Emma, and she spun around, pushing through the crowd, desperate to escape. Mark tried to follow, his instincts torn between the need to soothe her and the need to protect her from the dangers of his world. The room was a blur of lights and faces as he weaved through the dancers, his heart racing.
Suddenly, Emma's path was blocked by Rachel, her eyes widening in alarm when she saw the blood on her friend's hand and neck. "Emma, what happened?" Rachel's voice was a shout over the music, her gaze searching the room for a threat.
"It's him," Emma choked out, pointing at Mark, who was now only a few steps away. Rachel turned and saw the raw, primal hunger in Mark's eyes, the way he moved through the crowd with a predatory grace that sent a chill down her spine.
"Come on" Rachel said firmly, taking charge. She gripped Emma's hand and practically dragged her through the throng of people, her eyes darting back every few seconds to ensure Mark wasn't closing in. They burst through the club's exit into the cool night air, Rachel's pulse pounding in her ears.
"We need to get you to the hospital" Rachel said, her voice shaking slightly as she guided Emma into the passenger seat of her car. The adrenaline was wearing off, and Rachel could see the tremors starting to take hold of her friend's body. She slammed the door shut and sprinted around to the driver's side, starting the engine with shaking hands.
The ride was a blur of lights and sirens as Rachel broke every traffic law in the book to get to the nearest emergency room. She kept her eyes on the road, her knuckles white on the steering wheel, but her mind was racing. What had happened to Emma in there? Who was that guy?
When they arrived, Rachel practically carried Emma into the hospital, the latter's legs barely holding her weight. The bright lights of the waiting room were a stark contrast to the dark, pulsating club they had just left behind. A nurse rushed over, assessing the situation with a practiced eye. Rachel explained what little she knew, her voice trembling with fear and anger.
The nurse led them into an exam room, where Emma was quickly cleaned up and the bite wound on her neck was stitched. Rachel hovered by the door, glancing back at her friend with worry etched on her face. The nurse, a no-nonsense woman with a gentle touch, assured Rachel that the wound was not deep, but the psychological trauma was clear.
Emma's eyes were wide and haunted, staring at the wall as if she could see the events of the night playing out in front of her. Rachel felt a wave of protectiveness wash over her, a fierce need to keep her friend safe from whatever monster had done this to her.
"What was his name?" Rachel demanded when the nurse had finished.
Emma swallowed hard. "I don't know" she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper.
Rachel's grip tightened on the chair she was holding onto. "We're going to call the police" she said firmly. "You don't have to deal with this alone"
Emma nodded, her eyes filling with tears. "But Rachel" she said, her voice shaking, "I don't even know what happened. I don't know what his name"
Rachel took a deep breath. "Whatever his name, he's not coming near you again" she vowed. But as she held her friend's hand, she couldn't help but feel a creeping sense of dread. They had stumbled into a world she didn't understand, and she had a feeling that this was only the beginning.
The door to the exam room opened, and a young, attractive doctor stepped in. He had a calm, soothing presence that seemed to fill the room. Rachel immediately felt less anxious.
"I'm Dr. Harris" he said, glancing at the chart in his hand. "What happened here?"
Emma's voice was small, shaky. "A... a man bit me"
The doctor looked up, his gaze sharp. "A human?"
Rachel stepped in. "Yes, a man at the club"
Dr. Harris nodded, his expression unreadable. "And you are?"
"Rachel" she said firmly. "I'm her friend. What do we do?"
The doctor's eyes searched Rachel's before finally landing on Emma, who was visibly shaking. "Well, first, we're going to make sure you're okay. The bite isn't deep, but we need to keep an eye on it for infection. You'll need to take these antibiotics" he handed over a small packet of pills.
Just as Rachel was about to ask more questions, her phone rang, the shrill sound cutting through the tension. She fished it out of her pocket and saw it was a group call from their friends at the club. "Hang on" she told Dr. Harris, stepping into the hallway.
"Where are you guys?" It was Sam, her voice a mix of worry and annoyance. Rachel could hear the muffled sounds of the club in the background.
"We had to leave" Rachel said, her voice tight with tension. "Emma got hurt"
"What? What happened?" The chorus of their friends' concerned voices echoed through the line.
Rachel took a deep breath, trying to keep her voice steady. "Emma got bitten by some guy. We're at the hospital now"
There was a collective gasp on the other end of the line. "Oh my God" Sam exclaimed. "Is she okay?"
Rachel's grip on the phone tightened. "Physically, she will be" she said, her voice strained. "But she's pretty shaken up"
"We're on our way" Sam said immediately. "We'll be there as soon as we can"
Rachel nodded, though she knew they couldn't see her. "Just... be careful"
"We will" Sam assured her. "Just focus on Emma"
"We're at St. Sebastian's" Rachel said into the phone, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside her. "Just come as soon as you can"
"Got it" Sam said, the urgency in her tone clear. Rachel hung up and turned back to the exam room, her thoughts racing. As she stepped back inside, Dr. Harris was talking to Emma, his voice calm and soothing.
"It's important to keep the wound clean" he was saying. "And if you notice any unusual symptoms, come back immediately"
Emma nodded, her eyes glazed over with shock. Rachel could see the fear in her friend's eyes, and it made her blood boil. Whoever that guy was, she would make sure he paid for what he'd done.
"Thank you, Dr. Harris" Rachel said, her voice firm.
The doctor nodded, his gaze lingering on Emma. "Remember to take care of her" he said, before leaving the room. Rachel could feel his concern hanging in the air, a subtle hint that there was more to the situation than met the eye.
Moments later, the door swung open, and Rachel's heart leaped as Sam and the rest of their group rushed in, their faces a mirror of her own worry and anger. They gathered around the bed, each trying to get a look at Emma. Rachel stepped aside, giving them space.
Sam's eyes were dark with concern as she took in the bandage around Emma's neck. "What happened?" she asked, her voice tight with emotion.
Emma's eyes darted to Rachel, who gave her a reassuring nod. "This guy at the club," she began, her voice trembling, "he... he bit me"
Sam's face paled, and Victoria gasped. "What the hell?" Victoria's eyes flashed with anger.
"It's okay” Rachel assured them, though her own voice was anything but calm. "The doctor said it's not too bad"
"But why would he do that?" Sam's voice was incredulous. "What kind of sick person just goes around biting people?"
Rose, who had been standing quietly in the corner, suddenly spoke up, her voice thick with guilt. "It's my fault" she said, her eyes brimming with tears. "This was all supposed to be a fun night for me, for my bachelorette party" She looked around at her friends, her gaze finally landing on Emma. "And now look what happened. It's because of me that you're all here, that Emma's hurt"
Rachel squeezed her hand. "It's not your fault, Rose," she said gently. "You couldn't have known"
"But still" Rose insisted, her voice breaking. "If we hadn't gone to that club..."
Sam put an arm around her. "We're all in this together, Rose" she said firmly. "And we're going to get through it"
Victoria, ever the protector, turned to Rachel. "Did you get a good look at this asshole?"
Rachel nodded. "Yeah, but it's all a blur now. He had dark hair and was really tall"
"Well, we're going to find him" Victoria said, her jaw set. "And when we do, he's going to wish he never laid a finger on any of us"
"But how do we do that?" Sam asked, her brow furrowed in worry. "We don't even know his name or where he lives"
Sam thought for a moment before speaking. "Elizabeth is still back at the club. She said she'd check the security footage"
"Good" Rachel said, feeling a glimmer of hope. "Maybe she can get us some answers"
