The Invitation
Episode 1 The city of Eterna never truly slept. Neon signs bled color into the streets, casting a surreal glow on cracked sidewalks. Cars honked, drunks staggered out of bars, and a constant hum of electricity filled the night air. Amid all that chaos, five friends gathered in a cramped apartment on the twelfth floor of a high-rise that overlooked the river. Maya, the practical one, adjusted her glasses as she scrolled on her phone. Eli, loud and impulsive, tossed an empty soda can into the corner with a clatter. Jules, quiet but sharp, leaned against the window with a cigarette dangling between his fingers. Harper, all nerves and sarcasm, was sprawled across the couch. And then there was Nina, the dreamer, who always wanted something extraordinary to break the monotony of their lives. “Check this out,” Nina said suddenly, breaking the lull in their usual late-night chatter. She held up her phone, showing them a sleek black-and-silver digital invitation. The design was minimal: an embossed symbol of a circle split by jagged lines, and beneath it, words written in stark white: > You have been chosen. Midnight. Platform 6. Come alone or come together. Leave your fear behind. No sender. No number. Just a link that had appeared in her inbox earlier that day. “Spam,” Maya said instantly, not even glancing up. “Or some scam to rob idiots who wander into alleys at midnight.” “Yeah, classic serial killer bait,” Harper added, rolling his eyes. But Eli snatched the phone from Nina, grinning. “Or… it could be awesome. This city thrives on underground stuff. Secret shows, hidden clubs, immersive theater. Maybe this is one of those.” Jules exhaled smoke and muttered, “That symbol looks old. Like, cult-old.” The word cult hung in the air heavier than the cigarette haze. Still, Nina’s eyes gleamed with something close to obsession. “Don’t you guys get it? We’re stuck in routines. Work, sleep, rinse, repeat. What if this is a chance for something different? Something we’ll remember?” Maya shook her head but didn’t argue further. The truth was, a part of each of them felt the same pull. A whisper of curiosity beneath the layers of cynicism. By 11:30 p.m., despite every logical reason not to, they found themselves leaving the apartment together, bundled in jackets against the chill. The streets narrowed as they approached the subway district, where graffiti-coated walls leaned like crooked teeth. The further they walked, the quieter the city became. Even the usual night sounds seemed muted, as if the air itself held its breath. Platform 6 wasn’t on any official map, but the directions on Nina’s phone guided them unerringly. They slipped past the rusted turnstiles of a half-abandoned station and descended into a section no commuter used anymore. The escalator was dead, the metal steps slick with condensation. Their footsteps echoed sharply, too loud in the stale air. Jules lit another cigarette, though his hands trembled slightly. “Bad idea. This is a really bad idea.” “Then why didn’t you stay home?” Harper shot back, voice a little higher than usual. “Because if you idiots were going to vanish into some murder basement, someone had to witness it,” Jules said flatly. They reached the bottom. The platform stretched long and empty, the overhead lights flickering like weak heartbeats. Dust coated everything, yet faint footprints—fresh ones—led toward the far wall where a metal door waited. And painted across that door in black paint—or was it something darker?—was the same symbol from the invitation. The jagged circle. They stood frozen, five figures against the oppressive silence. The air smelled faintly metallic, like iron left too long in the rain. Eli was the first to move, pressing his palm against the cold surface of the door. It gave under his push, creaking open slowly. Beyond was only darkness. Nina smiled nervously. “This is it. Our ‘something different.’” Maya muttered, “Or our obituary.” Still, one by one, they stepped inside. The door groaned shut behind them, cutting off the dim light of the platform. And in the suffocating blackness, a voice none of them could place whispered through the walls: “Welcome to the game.” ---
