Chapter1
Sia stood at the mirror for the fifth time, staring at her reflection. She let out a sigh, but a broad smile soon spread across her face. Satisfied with her appearance, she swirled in her clothes and left the room, already late for her first day at a new job.
"Hurry, Si," her little brother called out as he walked into the room, holding a book in his hand. He nodded in approval of her outfit. Sia returned his acknowledgment with a pat on his head and grabbed her bag, rushing to the door.
"I'll be going to your school tomorrow, little Ben," she said, slamming the door behind her. She already knew he would be jumping with joy and, if she hadn't hurried out, he would have jumped on her in appreciation, which would have made her even later.
Her friend was waiting outside the house. He opened the car door and gestured for her to hop in, making Sia laugh as she climbed in.
"You know you don't have to pick me up. I could have just taken the bus," Sia told him while buckling her seat belt.
"Or you could have just ordered a cab," he retorted, starting the car engine. "Besides, I wanted to do this..." He let his words trail off as he stared at her. "You look beautiful," he commented, and all Sia could do was blush.
"Your face is red," he joked and zoomed off. Embarrassed, Sia stared outside the car, reminiscing about her life.
Sia Martinez hailed from the town of Beaufort, South Carolina. She lived there for ten years. Her father, Jacob Martinez, was in the housing estate business and moved to Arkansas after the death of his beloved wife, Mary Martinez. He remarried two years later for his daughter's sake, to Sarah Lopez. Sarah gave birth to Benjamin the following year. Five years after Ben's birth, Jacob died in a ghastly accident while returning home from work.
Sarah brought her ex-lover, Henry Miller, into the house after Jacob's one-year remembrance. Henry ran away with all of Jacob’s wealth three years later, which led to Sarah's depression. This affected Sia's and Ben's education. Sia was in her second year of college and had to drop out for a year. She started part-time jobs and saved money. Throughout the remainder of her college years, she applied for scholarships and took on any part-time job she could find. Ben's schooling continued, although he missed a term. The funds for both children were used only for him and their food. Sarah was a lazy woman who didn't know how to work and relied only on the funds. Three years later, she passed away after suffering from breast cancer, having exhausted the remaining funds on her treatment.
Ben was just eleven years old when he was sent back home from his boarding school because they couldn't afford the fees. Sia had completed her education by then and decided to move back home after her stepmom's death to take care of Ben. The house was the only thing they had left. After spending a year at home, she finally found a well-paying job as a house manager.
As they drove, Sia's friend noticed her silence. "Thinking about the past again?" he asked gently.
Sia nodded. "Sometimes it feels like everything happened just yesterday. But I'm determined to give Ben a better life."
He reached over and squeezed her hand reassuringly. "You're doing an amazing job, Sia. Ben is lucky to have you."
Sia smiled, feeling a bit better. "Thanks. And thanks for picking me up today. I really appreciate it."
"Anytime," he replied with a smile. "Now, let's get you to your new job on time."
When they arrived at the building, Sia took a deep breath, feeling a mix of nerves and excitement. Her friend gave her an encouraging nod as she stepped out of the car.
"You've got this, Sia. Go show them what you're made of," he called out as she closed the door.
With a final wave, Sia walked into the building, determined to make a good impression on her first day. She knew she had come a long way from the hardships of her past, and she was ready to embrace this new chapter in her life.
The day passed in a blur of introductions and training sessions. Sia's new colleagues were friendly, and she quickly felt at ease. By the time she left the house, she was exhausted but happy. She had taken the first step towards building a better future for herself and Ben.
As she walked home, Sia thought about her little brother. She couldn't wait to hear about his day at school and tell him about her own. Despite all the challenges they had faced, she knew they were going to be okay. They had each other, and that was all that mattered.
