CHAPTER TWO
"Mom... I know things will change one day" I looked into her eyes while holding her hand tightly to assure her. She turned to face me with tears strolling freely down from my eyes.
"Mmm" she took a deep breath and sighed "Helen, I'm very sorry I haven't done anything for you and your brother yet" she tried to instill courage in me.
"It's okay, Mom... It has been God all through and I know he never forgets us" I grimaced while trying to change the atmosphere and our conversation. Just then, Robert came in with this tiring expression on his face. I asked "What's wrong with you, Robert?
"Big Sis, I could not find anyone to help as they all turned their backs on me" he sobbed with tears in eyes. "Oh! Not now, Robert... I am still trying to keep our mother calm and you brought this up again!" I exclaimed.
"Helen, don't stress yourself up... Like you said earlier, God will always do it" she tried to ginger me up with a little faith and confidence.
"I believe, Mom" I said.
"Robert, don't worry too much also. You are still young huh" she beckoned to him and patted him on his back.
After the whole time of our discussion that seemed like a Family meeting, I stood up to go to the kitchen to find something for us to eat but I found out there was nothing to cook as soon I got to the kitchen.
"What do we do now?" I asked myself rhetorically. "If I should go in back there, it will lead to what we discussed all over and over again earlier" I whispered, touching my back pocket if there was anything there and I found a little change with me.
I went back to our small sitting room and found my Mom already sleeping on the Sofa with her head on Robert's laps. I walked to where they were and felt her temperature with my hands, then signalled to Robert to collect the change from me and buy something for themselves.
"Oh Robert! Have this change with me and try to buy something for you and Mom. I'll be back before evening" I said, taking my leave in search of the day's pasture.
"Big Sis... But you haven't eaten. Will you wait so I can rush to buy food for us to eat together?" he queried.
"No... I'll be fine huh. Take care of Mom" I said, turning to face my Mother and just then she opened her eyes.
"Mom... I'll back before evening" I hugged her.
"Where are you going, my dear?" she questioned.
"Anywhere, ma... I cannot be staying at home all days and be expecting money" I said, cracking up jokes.
"Okay Helen... May you find an helper on your way and do not stay long outside, dear" she admonished me.
"Alright Mom" I said, walking towards the door and slammed it behind me.
As soon as I got outside the street, I hummed "It's another beautiful morning".
To be Continued...
Just then, a message popped up on my phone screen. It was from Laura, a friend of mine who is working in a Popular Radio station. Laura had asked me to write a letter of appointment to be submitted in her company which I did but I haven't received any responses from there ever since.
Seeing her message, I knew it was urgent or important so I find a place to take cover for me to read through. I went behind the basement and quickly unlocked my phone, tapping on the message to read and it says "Hi Helen! You can come over now. Our CEO is inside his office but the issue is that he's awful. Anyways, I hope you can find your way in by not letting loose of your guard" and she ended it with luck for me.
I deliberated over the message for some time but when I saw I had nothing to lose than to give it a chance, I concluded to go there and try my luck.
I picked up my bag and rushed towads the direction of the road, waving at a Taxi to wait. As soon as I saw him halted the Taxi, I took my bag and walked in. "Madam... Where are you going" he asked me. I gave him the direction to the Company I was going, asking if he knew the place and he nodded affirmatively.
"How long will it take us to get there" I queried further.
"Not up to Five minutes" he answered.
"Really? That's not far" I murmured and something came into my mind to ask for the Tfare " So how much is the Transport fare?"
"5 dollars madam" he said. I checked my bag to see if there was anything left in it and I found the actual amount that will take me there.
"Oh! That's good then" I said out of relief as I rested my back on the seat, with only one thing on my mind "How will I persuade this awful boss of Hers?" I asked myself rhetorically.
It took us less than five minutes when we got to the the Company. As I alighted from the Taxi, I was amazed with what I saw. I turned back to ask the Taxi man again if it was truly where I told him "Is this the Company?".
"Yes madam" he replied.
"Wow really... Here is your money" I offered the money to him while he went his way.
It was a Skyscraper. I looked up the building, then to the other side of the street, surveying the road when I noticed the place was a Government Reserved Area. "Oh my!" I giggled. It was that day I knew there is a place that seems like heaven and I vowed not to think of commiting suicide any longer, instead to enjoy and live in one of the penthouses I saw around the Company one day.
