Chapter 1 — The Door That Should Never Open
The Tower appeared in the sky on the night the stars disappeared. At first, the people of Eldoria thought it was an illusion. A cloud. A mountain hidden behind the darkness. Perhaps even a strange reflection caused by the moon. But then the bells began to ring. One after another, every bell in the capital sounded at exactly midnight. No one had touched them. No one had ordered them to ring. Yet their deep voices rolled across the city, shaking windows and waking sleeping children. Then everyone looked toward the northern sky. And they saw it. A tower. It pierced the clouds like a black spear. Its walls were made of a material that seemed to absorb the light of the moon. Thousands of enormous rings surrounded its structure, rotating slowly in the air. Above it, the heavens were distorted. Stars bent around the tower. Clouds spiraled toward it. Lightning traveled upward instead of falling toward the earth. And at the very top— there was nothing. The tower continued beyond what human eyes could see. People gathered in the streets. Soldiers dropped their weapons. Priests fell to their knees. Mages stared at their instruments in disbelief. Nobody spoke. Until an old man whispered: "The Tower has awakened." --- Sixteen Years Later A young man ran through the forest. "Move!" Branches struck his face as he pushed deeper between the trees. Behind him came the sound of something enormous crashing through the forest. CRASH! A tree fell. The young man glanced backward. His expression immediately changed. "You're kidding me." A creature nearly three meters tall emerged from the darkness. Its body resembled that of a wolf, but its muscles were far too large. Black scales covered its shoulders, while two curved horns protruded from its skull. Its eyes glowed crimson. A Bloodhorn Direwolf. The young man tightened his grip around a short iron sword. He was breathing heavily. His clothes were torn. Blood ran down his left arm. And he had absolutely no intention of fighting the monster. "Why did I have to accept this stupid quest?" The wolf growled. The young man turned around. "Right." He ran faster. "My survival comes first." His name was Kael Ardyn. He was nineteen years old. And according to almost everyone who knew him, he was completely ordinary. No noble blood. No legendary sword. No famous teacher. No rare magical talent. His magical ability was barely measurable. His swordsmanship was mediocre. And his physical strength was nothing impressive. The only thing Kael was good at was surviving. Which was why he had become an adventurer. Not because he dreamed of glory. Not because he wanted fame. And certainly not because he wanted to climb the legendary Tower of Infinity. He simply needed money. His younger sister had been sick for months, and medicine was expensive. Unfortunately, the only job available to an inexperienced adventurer had been gathering medicinal herbs inside the Blackwood Forest. The quest had sounded simple. Gather ten Moonleaf plants. Return alive. Kael had successfully gathered nine. Then the wolf found him. "Just one more!" He spotted a glowing blue plant growing beside a large stone. "Perfect!" Kael changed direction. The wolf followed. He grabbed the Moonleaf. Then— the ground disappeared beneath his feet. "What—" Kael dropped. He fell through a hidden opening. "AAAAAAAH!" The wolf stopped at the edge. Kael continued falling. Ten meters. Twenty. Thirty. He struck something soft. Then rolled. Then rolled again. Finally— THUD! Silence. Kael remained motionless. After several seconds, he opened one eye. "Am I dead?" Nothing answered. He slowly sat up. His body hurt everywhere. "Apparently not." Kael touched his head. No blood. He looked around. Darkness surrounded him. He pulled a small crystal from his pocket. "Light." The crystal glowed. The darkness retreated. Kael's eyes widened. He wasn't inside a normal cave. He was standing in front of an enormous stone doorway. Ancient symbols covered its surface. Two statues stood on either side. Both depicted armored warriors holding enormous swords. Above the doorway was a single symbol. A circle surrounded by countless smaller circles. Kael stared at it. He had seen that symbol before. Every child in Eldoria had. It was the symbol of the Tower of Infinity. Kael took a step backward. "No." His heart began beating faster. "This can't be..." He looked upward. There was no opening. No sky. No forest. Only darkness. He had fallen underground. But the Tower wasn't supposed to have an underground entrance. Everyone knew the Tower had only one entrance. The enormous gate that had appeared sixteen years ago in the northern wasteland. Kael approached the doorway. A strange feeling came over him. The ancient symbols began glowing. One after another. Blue. Then violet. Then white. Kael froze. "What's happening?" The stone door shook. Dust fell from the ceiling. A deep voice echoed through the chamber. "Candidate detected." Kael's blood turned cold. "What?" "Soul signature confirmed." The symbols became brighter. "Compatibility: 99.97%." Kael stared at the doorway. "I don't understand." The voice continued. "Beginning recognition sequence." A small window suddenly appeared in front of him. Kael nearly fell backward. It floated in the air. Transparent blue letters formed across it. --- [TOWER SYSTEM ACTIVATED] [Unknown Candidate detected.] [Scanning...] [Name: Kael Ardyn] [Age: 19] [Class: None] [Level: 1] [Strength: 7] [Agility: 8] [Vitality: 6] [Intelligence: 9] [Mana: 4] [Luck: ???] [Unique Trait: Unknown] --- Kael stared at the information. "A system?" He had heard stories. Every adventurer had. Some people were born with special abilities. Others awakened mysterious systems after surviving near-death experiences. But those stories were rare. And Kael had never imagined that something like this could happen to him. He reached toward the floating screen. His finger passed through it. The screen reacted. --- [Warning.] [This system is incomplete.] [Core functions unavailable.] [Administrator privileges unavailable.] [Tower access authorization required.] --- Kael swallowed. "Why me?" The Tower answered. "Because you have returned." Kael froze. "What?" The voice disappeared. Before he could understand what it meant, the enormous stone doors began opening. GROOOOOAN. The sound echoed through the chamber. A brilliant white light poured through the gap. Kael shielded his eyes. Wind rushed past him. Then— silence. He slowly lowered his arm. Beyond the doorway was a vast staircase. It descended into darkness. But carved into the floor were glowing letters. Kael read them aloud. "Those who enter..." He stepped closer. The letters continued. "Must climb." Kael frowned. "That's strange." He looked behind him. The tunnel where he had fallen was gone. There was only solid stone. "No way back." He turned toward the staircase. "Of course." Kael sighed. "The moment I finally find something valuable, I'm trapped." He started walking. --- The staircase continued downward. Kael counted the steps. One hundred. Two hundred. Five hundred. The deeper he went, the colder the air became. His crystal began flickering. "Please don't go out." The light flickered again. Kael sighed. "Of course." He continued. Eventually, he reached the bottom. A massive chamber opened before him. At its center stood a circular platform. On the platform was a sword. Not an ordinary sword. The blade was black. Not dark metal. Black. It seemed to absorb the surrounding light. A strange blue line ran along its edge. Kael approached carefully. Another system window appeared. --- [Unknown Weapon Detected.] [Name: ???] [Rank: ???] [Requirement: ???] [Warning: Do not touch.] --- Kael stopped. "Well..." He looked at the sword. Then at the warning. Then back at the sword. "I'm definitely not touching that." A low growl came from behind him. Kael slowly turned. Two red eyes appeared in the darkness. Then another pair. Then another. His face went pale. "That's..." Creatures stepped into the light. One. Two. Five. Ten. Dozens. They were smaller than the Bloodhorn Direwolf, but they were clearly related. Their claws scraped against the stone floor. Kael recognized them. Shadowfang Wolves. A pack. At least thirty. He drew his iron sword. His hands trembled. "Thirty against one." He forced a nervous smile. "That's fair." The wolves growled. Kael glanced at the black sword. The system warning remained. DO NOT TOUCH. He looked at the wolves. Then at the sword. Then back at the wolves. "Sorry." Kael walked toward the platform. "I changed my mind." He grabbed the sword. For one second— nothing happened. Then the entire chamber exploded with light. --- [WARNING.] [Illegal synchronization detected.] [Unknown weapon attempting to synchronize with host.] [Reject synchronization?] [YES / NO] --- Kael stared. "NO!" The system responded immediately. [Synchronization accepted.] "Wait!" Too late. Pain exploded through his body. Kael screamed. Blue-black energy surged from the sword into his arm. Veins of light spread across his skin. His vision disappeared. And suddenly— he saw a memory. A city burning. Thousands of people running. A black sky. A woman holding a newborn child. A tower standing in the distance. Then a voice. A familiar voice. "When the Tower calls you..." Kael's eyes widened. He knew that voice. It belonged to his mother. But his mother had died when he was three. The vision continued. His mother looked directly at him. "...do not climb it." Kael gasped. The vision shattered. He returned to reality. The sword was now in his hand. The wolves had stopped moving. Every creature in the chamber was staring at him. Kael looked at the blade. Its black surface reflected his terrified face. A new message appeared. --- [Synchronization complete.] [Weapon acquired.] INFINITY EDGE Rank: Unknown Type: Soul-Bound Weapon Special Property: Growth Current Power: 1 Hidden Potential: ∞ --- Kael stared at the final symbol. "Infinity..." The wolves suddenly attacked. Kael raised the sword instinctively. The first wolf leaped. He swung. SHING! The creature froze in midair. A thin blue line appeared across its body. Then— BOOM! The wolf was thrown backward. Kael stared at his sword. "I did that?" Three more wolves charged. He raised the blade. Something inside him changed. The world became slower. He could see every movement. Every claw. Every muscle. Every opening. A strange sensation spread through his body. The system appeared again. --- [Combat analysis activated.] [Enemy detected.] [Shadowfang Wolf — Level 3] [Weakness: Throat] --- Kael moved. One step. One swing. The first wolf fell. He turned. Second. Third. Fourth. His movements became faster. Not because he had suddenly become a master swordsman. The sword was teaching him. Every attack revealed something. Every mistake became information. Every defeated enemy made the weapon stronger. The wolves surrounded him. Kael jumped. He landed on one wolf's back. His sword flashed. Another creature fell. The remaining wolves hesitated. Kael stared at them. For the first time in his life— he wasn't afraid. He was angry. He remembered his sister. He remembered his mother. He remembered everyone who had told him he was weak. Kael tightened his grip. "I don't know what this Tower wants from me." His eyes glowed faintly blue. "But if you're going to trap me here..." The Infinity Edge began emitting light. "...then I'm going to climb." The wolves charged. Kael stepped forward. --- Several minutes later, the chamber became silent. Thirty Shadowfang Wolves lay defeated across the floor. Kael stood in the center. Blood covered his clothes. His breathing was heavy. The sword remained in his hand. A notification appeared. --- [Enemies defeated: 31] [Experience acquired.] [Level increased.] [Level 1 → Level 4] [New skill unlocked.] Infinity Sense Description: Allows the user to perceive hidden energy, weaknesses, traps, and structures within the Tower. --- Kael stared at the message. "Level four..." He smiled. Then he noticed something strange. The room was changing. The stone walls were disappearing. The floor beneath his feet became transparent. Kael looked down. His stomach dropped. There was nothing beneath him. No ground. No foundation. Only an endless blue void. Then a massive platform appeared in front of him. A glowing staircase rose from it. At the top stood an enormous door. A symbol appeared above the door. FLOOR 1 Kael's expression became serious. "So this is the beginning." The Tower spoke again. This time, the voice was louder. And somehow— almost pleased. "Welcome, Kael Ardyn." The doors opened. Beyond them was an enormous world. Mountains floated in the sky. Rivers of blue fire flowed through valleys. Ancient ruins stretched across the horizon. And in the distance— something enormous moved between the mountains. Kael stared. His system appeared one final time. --- [WELCOME TO THE TOWER OF INFINITY.] [Current Floor: 1] [Objective: Reach the next floor.] [Main Quest Activated.] CLIMB THE TOWER Reach Floor 100. Reward: Unknown Failure: Death --- Kael looked at the endless landscape. Then at his sword. Then toward the distant monster. He smiled nervously. "Floor one." He stepped through the doorway. Behind him, the entrance vanished. The Tower had accepted its newest challenger. And somewhere, far above the clouds— something ancient opened its eyes. "Finally..." A voice whispered through the darkness. "The lost heir has returned."
