Enjoying The View?

Josh’s POV The phone buzzed in my sweaty hand. "Shit..." The screen lit up in the darkness of the night. I knew who it was before I even looked. This miserable shadow that had been haunting me for years. Unknown Number: “Report. Now.” I swallowed hard. My gaze shifted back to the house, where Alina moved erratically. Her messy hair fell over her blood-streaked face, her wide eyes staring at nothing. Her hands trembled as she tried to shove pieces of the mangled body into trash bags. She seemed lost, on the edge of a breakdown. She couldn’t be an ordinary hybrid—she wasn’t half human. I was sure of that. Her scent didn’t carry the earthy undertone typical of our kind, but there was something there. Something powerful. A dense, almost suffocating aura wrapped around her, making the air around her heavy, electric. I’d spent enough time around supernatural beings—witches, fairies, and the like—to recognize power when I saw it, and whatever Alina was, she wasn’t just a simple human. But what bothered me more wasn’t the brutal scene—it was what I had seen earlier. What truly unsettled me was the brutal scene before my eyes. The man on the ground was unrecognizable. Torn apart mercilessly, without even having a chance to fight back. Blood pooled around the remains that had once been a body, soaking into the wooden floor. The sight was disturbing, but what haunted me more were the flashes I’d seen earlier—her moving. The attacks, the glimpses of something like claws tearing through flesh. Fast. Too fast. Those flashes... claws appearing in the chaos. It wasn’t normal. It wasn’t common. Something inside her had manifested, something beyond what I knew. A force she didn’t even seem to understand. My hands were sweating as I typed a quick reply. Josh: “Unstable situation. She eliminated a Maybane. Doesn’t seem aware of her own strength. Still observing.” The response came seconds later. Unknown Number: “Don’t lose sight of her. If she leaves, follow her. If she remembers anything, contain her. We need to find out what she is.” My pulse quickened. Whoever was working with the alpha—whoever this unknown figure was—had their own agenda. And I was stuck right in the middle of it, probably already dead. I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself. I had to be careful. One wrong move, and I’d end up like the man on the floor. Inside the house, I noticed Alina stopped suddenly. Her hands hovered over the half-full trash bag, her head tilting slightly, as if she’d just heard something. Her body stiffened, her breathing short and irregular. I gripped the phone tighter. We needed to figure out what she was. Who exactly was this “we” that this bastard mentioned? I didn’t know. I never had. Since he found me, he’d never revealed his name or who was really behind his orders. But I couldn’t back out now. Fear bound me to him like invisible chains. I had made a mistake years ago, one mistake that cost me my freedom. Embezzling money from the alpha. A small amount at first, just enough not to be noticed. But I got drunk on the ease of it and took more than I should’ve. And someone noticed. This bastard. He knew enough to destroy me. To have the alpha tear me apart without hesitation. Since then, I’d been his puppet, following every command, every demand, unable to break free. And now, here I was. Spying on Alina. She knelt on the floor of the living room, gasping for air, her hands pressed against her head. Her body seemed to tremble from the inside out, as if fighting against something. A chill ran down my spine. Whatever was inside her... it was trying to break free. I didn’t hesitate to grab my phone again, but this time I dialed another number. The alpha answered on the third ring. “Speak.” His voice was always firm, void of emotion. “Alina eliminated a Maybane. He didn’t have a chance to react.” The silence on the other end stretched for a few seconds before he replied. “Reason?” “He attacked her.” I answered. “Continue observing.” My throat was dry. “She’s... different. Something manifested in her. Something fast, lethal. She’s not a normal hybrid. I don’t know what she is.” “And the body?” “She’s trying to dispose of it. But she seems unstable, like she’s losing control.” The alpha let out a low sigh. “Understood. Keep observing. If there’s any further manifestation... inform me immediately.” “What if she leaves?” “Follow her. Figure out what she is.” The line went silent after that. I tucked my phone back in my pocket and looked at the house again. Alina hadn’t moved. She stayed kneeling, breathing heavily, her hands clutching her own hair. The tension in her body was palpable, like she was on the verge of snapping. I couldn’t be seen. I couldn’t be discovered. But something inside me told me this night was far from over. And I didn’t know if I’d make it out alive. Hours Later Time passed slowly. Alina stayed inside, doing nothing but breathing heavily and staring at the floor. Something inside her seemed to be adjusting, trying to find balance. I should have left by now. But I couldn’t. My phone buzzed again. The unknown number again. “Situation?” I quickly typed back. “Nothing’s changed. She hasn’t moved in hours.” “She might be recovering energy. Don’t lower your guard.” My fingers hovered over the keyboard before I typed the next question. “What is she?” The response took a little longer to come. “Find out.” Great. Very helpful. I sighed and tucked my phone back into my pocket, turning my attention back to the house. But it was then that I noticed something. She tilted her head slightly, as if she’d just heard something. Her body went rigid, her breathing short and irregular. It made me more tense than before, the image of the man on the floor flashing back into my mind instantly. Did she sense me? I barely had time to react before she turned her head in my direction, her eyes locking onto the exact spot where I was hiding. For a moment, neither of us moved. Then her lips parted, and in a barely audible whisper, she said directly to me, “Enjoying the view?” I stayed still, my instincts screaming at me to disappear. But it was too late. She knew she was being watched. The question now was—did she know who I was? I grabbed my phone to call the alpha, because things were slipping out of my control, but when I looked back, Alina was no longer in the same spot. My heart raced. I had lost sight of her for a second, and she was gone. I straightened up, my eyes scanning every visible corner of the house through the window. Nothing. And then... A shiver ran down my spine as I felt something behind me. The warm breath. The smell of blood. My stomach churned. Slowly, too slowly, I turned. And there she was, staring at me from the dark, her eyes glowing with something unnatural. She didn’t even look fully wolf. It was something... more. I couldn’t move. She tilted her head, her eyes fixed on me. I knew she could kill me right there. And then, without warning, she just... smiled. Not a friendly smile. It was something predatory. My blood froze. I needed to get out of there. But before I could react, she whispered, “Enjoying the view?” I didn’t have a good answer for that. And for the first time in a long while, I wondered if I might be the prey here.
