Samya´s POV
My goodness, it's almost quarter past three in the morning. I've been trying unsuccessfully to reach Alina for three hours now. My God in heaven, what are we going to do? The situation has gotten out of hand.
I felt a chill run down my spine when she said there was a stranger in her house. I didn't send anyone. So who was he?
Unfortunately, there's nothing I can do but wait. If I leave the house at this time, my father will want to interrogate me with a million questions: where am I going, who am I going with? But I'm really worried. I've already sent dozens of messages asking her to come to my house, telling her not to stay there alone, but she's simply disappeared off the map.
Suddenly, my cell phone vibrates. It's a message from her.
- Everything under control.
I reply immediately:
- What do you mean “all under control”?
- Everything under control, Samya. I've sorted it out. But actually, I still really need your help to solve a little problem... I need to take the garbage out of the house.
My breathing gets heavy. Something's wrong.
- Alina, what have you done? Who was that man standing there?
- I don't know.
- Alina?
- Samy... he came here to kill me.
My stomach turns.
- What do you mean?
- He attacked me, and I fought back. It was the least I could do. But now I need you to help me take out the garbage.
- Alina, for God's sake, I don't understand. What do you mean “take out the trash”?
- I killed him. Because if I hadn't, I'd probably be dead right now.
My heart is racing. I would never have imagined Alina killing someone. Not that she was passive, but this? That's not like her.
- Wait... let me get this straight. - My head is spinning. - Did you kill him? Or rather, he attacked you and you reacted? How did you find the strength to kill him? If he came to kill you, he probably wasn't just any werewolf.
- Samya, I need to find you to explain. Even I didn't understand what happened. When I saw it, it had already happened. You need to help me.
- Help you with what, Alina? For God's sake!
- Don't you understand my messages? I killed him! There's a body in my house, and I need to get rid of it as soon as possible.
My mouth drops open in shock. I'm slow to respond. My brain refuses to process all this. Before I can type anything, Alina calls me.
When I answer, she's in a panic. She screams into the phone:
- Samya, won't you help me?! What about the whole “we're in this together” thing?!
- Alina, for God's sake, you're not letting me think! - My voice is shaking. - I thought you were going to run away... I never imagined that you would kill someone. That you were capable of it.
- Now it's done! - She says, harshly. - And if he came after me, he probably knows everything. He was probably sent by the Alpha. If he wants my head, he'll probably want yours too.
My blood runs cold.
- No, no, no... Not my head! Alina, I'm the daughter of an Alpha. No one will touch me. - The words come out without me realizing it.
- Ah, so things have changed? Then you can touch me all you want since I'm a nobody. - Her voice is full of irony. - Now that being Alpha's daughter benefits you, huh? You could at least help me with that... If only and then I disappeared. But you'd think the daughter of an Alpha would abandon me...
- Alina, that's not what I meant! - I try to make it right. - You have to understand, this is a lot for me. I'm trying to organize my thoughts. I'm nervous, I'm worried.
Silence.
- Where are you? - I ask. - I'll come to you and we'll see what to do. But I can't go now. I'll be there first thing tomorrow, I promise. Okay?
- You don't have to. After all, you're the daughter of an Alpha. You can't get mixed up in these things, can you? - She hangs up.
I try to call her back. She doesn't pick up.
My heart hammers in my chest. I quickly get dressed and leave the room. Alina is my only friend, I've never cared that she's not totally wolf, and I've always ignored my father's requests; if it had been up to him, she and I would never have exchanged a single word in the corridors or at company meetings. On the way, I bump into my brother, John.
- Little sister, where are you going at this time of day?
- Helping a friend, John. Please. Daddy wouldn't like that.
- Dad wouldn't like that. You're an unmated she-wolf, going out alone at this hour...
- John, help me! I've never done anything wrong. It's a matter of urgency!
- What urgency?
- An anxiety attack.
He looks at me suspiciously.
- You're lucky Dad's not home. But I'll take you.
- You don't have to. I turn around.
- It's impossible. I won't let you go out alone.
I take a deep breath. I need to think fast.
- It's all right. It's not an anxiety attack. I want to go to Dad's country house for a girls' weekend.
- So where are your bags?
- John, I can buy new clothes. The house already has everything I need. Look, I'll stop by Alina's and head straight to the country house. You can follow my GPS. If I go off course or take too long, you can call Dad.
He narrows his eyes, but accepts.
As soon as I leave, I speed straight to Alina's house.
The smell of blood hits me before I even get inside. My stomach churns. I'm a she-wolf, I'm used to blood. Actually, not so much, I've never had to hunt or get dirty with it, after all, I've always had everything and I was raised to be Luna. But this situation is different. It's weighing on me. If my father finds out...
I knock on the door. No one answers.
- Alina?
It takes a while, but she opens it. Her face is pale.
- I told you I'd come. Let me help you.
- Go away. The Alpha's daughter, “the untouchable” can't get involved with the scum.
- Stop it! You know I'm not like that. I've never made a distinction between us. You're my only friend, be more understanding and see my side too.
She crosses her arms.
- It didn't seem that way when you wanted to leave.
- Are you going to let me in or not? You can smell the blood from around the corner. Another thing, you look so pale, the face of hunger.
- Liar, you don't feel a thing. I sprayed the whole house with bleach.
- Well, it didn't go on properly. Excuse me. - I go in, pushing her lightly.
My heart races at the scene before me. I expected to find a body. But what I see are several black garbage bags.
- Where is the man? Don't tell me... you cut him up and put him in these bags? - My vision goes dark for a moment.
- The next thing I knew, there were only his remains scattered around the house... - Her eyes water. - Samya, for God's sake, don't leave me. I'm on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
I pull her into a tight hug.
- We're in this together. I won't abandon you. - I tell her, hoping I'll have the strength to keep this promise.
Later, while I'm packing Alina's suitcase, I wonder if she looked in the mirror, her eyes were red, like a junkie, her feet were muddy and her clothes were very sweaty. I was even going to ask her about it, but I preferred to keep quiet, not if I would like the answer, or rather, if she would have an answer to give me.
Now, driving to the country house, my thoughts are going back and forth with her here sleeping in the passenger seat, it's amazing how we never get to know people fully, I mean, she's a murderer and now I'm an accomplice, if it was bad for her, it would probably be bad for me. But I know one thing: I need to protect myself and this is the best time. So when I park I send a message.
- Good morning, we need to talk... It's urgent.
