Carter
‘I need a tree.’
‘A what?’ Walker linked back to me, clearly confused.
‘A Christmas tree. With lights, and ornaments. Maybe some ribbons or whatever other s**t you put on there.’ I responded, glancing towards my sleeping mate. She had just fallen asleep after the doctor came in to check on her. Luckily Dr. Olsen was on shift. She was assigned to this hospital after my dad found out which college I planned on attending. I thought it was a slight over reaction before, but now I’m actually thankful.
Dr. Olsen wasn’t too keen on me lying about being a volunteer, but how else could I stay close to my mate without coming off like a total f*****g creep?
Brooklyn was perfect. I already loved everything about her. I’m not even exaggerating. I could literally just sit here for hours, watching her sleep. Okay, maybe I’ve already done that. This mate s**t is no joke, and Kilo is just as taken with her as I am. We’re all f*****g in.
Obviously I couldn’t tell her who or what I was yet. Clearly she has no idea werewolves even exist, and she doesn’t seem to remember seeing Kilo. If she did, she wasn’t freaking out about it. So maybe that’s a good sign.
‘I’m on it. Need anything else while I’m out?’ Walker asked, making me think about his question.
What would make the best Christmas ever? I mean, obviously she needs gifts…but I also don’t want to go too crazy.
I started to look up the top christmas gifts to get your girlfriend, and I copied the link before sending it to Walker’s phone.
‘I sent a list.’ I linked him, knowing he was lingering just outside the room.
‘Clothes, candles, chocolate, jewlery…’ He began to read it off through the link. ‘A freaking puppy? Seriously dude?!’
‘They have to have some type of rental services for that kind of stuff, right?’
‘I’m pretty sure you can’t rent puppies.’ Walker mumbled, like it was the most outlandish idea.
‘Well, find out for me. As my future beta, this is your first official task.’ I linked, knowing that would shut him up. Walker was always begging me to give him some type of beta s**t to do. This was his dream come true.
‘Yes Alpha, I’m on it. You can count on me.’ He rushed.
Oh goddess, I’m going to regret asking him for help, aren’t I?
A few minutes later, there was a soft knock on the door.
I jumped to my feet and ran towards it, trying not to wake Brooklyn. From the scent alone I could tell it was the nurse from earlier.
“Oh, hi.” She squeaked when I opened the door. Her wide green eyes peered up at me as her cheeks turned a bright shade of red. This wasn’t uncommon. Being 6’4 and having the physique of a god, I’ve grown used to the attention. But right now, I found it pretty f*****g annoying.
I only wanted Brooklyn to be the one to look at me like.
“She’s asleep.” I stated, not wanting her to come into the room and wake her. As far as she’s concerned, I’m Brooklyn’s boyfriend…which isn’t exactly wrong. She just doesn’t know that yet.
“I just wanted to drop off her belongings from the front desk.” She said, holding up a white plastic bag.
“Thanks, I’ll make sure she gets it.” I grabbed the bag and went to shut the door.
“Oh, okay great!” Her muffled voice came through the wooden door as I pushed it closed, and looked down at the bag in my hand.
What I was about to do would probably seem like an invasion of privacy to most. But our situation’s a little different. Brooklyn’s my mate. We’re meant to be together. What’s mine is hers, and what’s hers…well, it’ll eventually be mine.
I peered over my shoulder, making sure Brooklyn was still asleep even though her even breaths were enough to tell me she was, I had to make double sure.
My hand slipped inside of the plastic bag, grabbing the first thing I felt which just so happened to be her wallet. From the information I was able to get out of Dr. Olsen, I already knew her last name was Pierce, and she was nineteen years old. Pulling out her i.d. I looked at the picture and couldn’t help but smile. Goddess was she cute. Those blue eyes were practically glowing, even in the picture. I checked her height next. 5’4”. I’m exactly a foot taller than her. She also had a student i.d. for Pennbrook university.
Fuck. Pennbrook. That’s about three hours away. I thought about going to Pennbrook, but it was a little too close to Black Lake. Their pack owns that territory. My dad is familiar with their Alpha, but from what I’ve heard about him, he’s a pretty huge d**k.
Picking up Brooklyn’s phone next, I turned it on, realizing it needed a password to get into it. Or a fingerprint. I glanced back, eyeing Brooklyn’s small hand that was resting on the side of the bed.
I slowly crept over, trying to be as quiet as possible and hoped to god she wouldn’t wake up. From the amount of pain meds she took, I figured she’d sleep for a couple more hours.
Placing the back onto the chair beside her bed, I reached out and gently touched her wrist. The second my skin brushed hers, sparks shot through me, making this deep want stir deep inside of me. A type of want that I knew would eventually consume me. But for now, I was trying to fight it the best I could. It’s hard when she smells so f*****g good.
Sliding the phone against her finger, I held my breath until I saw the screen unlock and instantly frowned.
Her wallpaper was of her and that douchebag.
I pulled the phone closer to my face, examining the two of them very closely. He was hanging all f*****g over her. His arm was wrapped around her shoulders while she just stood there, smiling at the camera, stiff as a board.
Good, that means she knew even back then.
Suddenly the phone began to vibrate as text after text started to come in.
The prick tried calling her ten times.
Going into her messages, I saw the asshole's name with a heart beside it and gripped the phone tighter. Clearly this asshole was using her. She didn’t know that I was out there, and that’s okay. But after this, she’s going to start realizing.
I went through message after message, getting rage bated by each one as they got worse and worse.

I squeezed the phone tighter, making it shatter in my hand. That last message was the final straw.
He’s going to try and sweet talk her into getting back with him. Over my dead body.
My eyes dripped to Brooklyn’s sleeping face. Just looking at her was enough to make my heart race. I had never seen anything so beautiful. Reaching out, I brushed a strand of hair away from her face, causing sparks to shoot up my arm. She let out a content sigh, the sound letting me know she felt this too as I just stared at her.
She has no idea what’s coming. No matter what, I’m going to make this work. Whatever it takes, I’m willing to do it.
Just as that thought crossed my mind, my phone started to buzz in my pocket, and I knew deep down who it was before I even looked at the name on the screen.
“Hello sir.” I answered, waiting for my dad to speak.
“Carter, what’s going on? Where are you? Why did you tell your mother you aren’t coming to the lodge this year?” He asked roughly, his Alpha tone making Kilo stir. Not shrink back…stir.
“Something came up.” I answered, stepping away from Brooklyn’s bed.
“What’s more important than your pack? If this is about football again–”
“It’s not.” I interrupted, and I knew that caught him off guard. “It’s my mate. I’ve found her.”
“Your mate? Why didn’t you say so?!” He rushed, sounding a lot happier than I expected he would be. I mean, I know he was waiting for this day just like I’ve been. Once I found my mate, it meant my dad could retire.
“It just happened last night.” I explained.
“Well, she is more than welcome to come to the lodge. In fact, I’ll have Gale get one of the small cabins prepared for you right away. You two probably want more privacy.” The excitement in his tone left me feeling even more uneasy.
“We won’t be able to make it. She’s in the hospital at the moment. There was a car accident.” I knew indulging that bit of information would bite me in the ass, but I knew my dad wouldn’t take any other excuse.
“Is she alright? Is her wolf strong enough to heal her?” He asked, and I closed my eyes before pinching the bridge of my nose.
“She’s fine. We just don’t want to make the long drive after all of that.” I explained. “Tell mom I’m sorry and I’ll call you guys soon.”
With that, I hung up the phone, not even letting my dad say goodbye because I know he has so many questions that I couldn’t answer right now.
I’ll tell them soon…
Right now, my mate is the most important thing. All that other stuff we can figure out later.
‘Alpha, I got the tree!’ Walker linked, and I looked back at my mate longingly.
‘Okay, bring it up. But be quiet, she’s still sleeping.’
First things first…I have to give her the best Christmas ever.
