I looked at the private in the rearview mirror. “And like Max here just said, we just bought us some time, too.” Jackson knew what I was getting at and nodded. “Fingers crossed the captain will be even more pissed at you and will confide in me.” “Throw in a few crossed toes,” I replied, yanking the Jeep west now. “On second thought, better make it all of them.” * * * * We arrived at a small desert town about twenty minutes later. Though town might’ve been a bit of an exaggeration. Basically it was a handful of small homes, a few trailers, a bar (yippy!), a tiny grocery store, and a rusted water tower towering above everything.
