Trouble at the Door

I gathered what information I could from Ms. Ravenwing and decided to start making lists. This was what I was good at and it helped to organize my thoughts. “Do you want me to look into other Missing Person’s cases?” Zira already knew the answer but it was cute that she was asking me. “The real question is, how far back do we go?” The silence hung in the office and I honestly didn’t know. We only came to this town three years ago. “I want to go back ten years, cross reference any person missing from the reservation, wolf pack, humans, and even the Amish community.” Zira muttered and I knew it was going to be a lot for her to handle. “You can bring in whomever you wish to help you with the data.” She let out a sigh of relief and I tossed my pen down. “I’m going to visit Cody.” She wiggled her eyebrows at me. “Isn’t it a little early for a booty call?” I threw a nasty look at her. “He has been around longer than we have. It is also safer to poke around with him than get in the same room with any Alpha.” “You have a valid point. Just try to keep the poking to getting information.” I scowled at her and was starting out the door when a prickling sensation came over me. My skin felt like it was on fire and my throat closed up. Zira was staring at me with wide eyes. The Alpha of the Blue Ridge Pack just made his appearance back in the territory. Fear gripped me and I was looking around the office. “Calm down Callisto, it could be that he just wanted to check in with his pack.” I shot her a look and she shrugged. For the past three years, I only sensed the Alpha twice. The first time I was able to get out of town on a case. He was gone before I knew it. “Ok, change of plans I’m going to head out to see some of the Amish families. The Bishop and I are on good terms…” A wave of heat and nausea tore through me and I fell to the floor panting. “Calli? Oh my goddess Calli we need to get you out of here. He is coming this way, isn’t he?” I shook my head and prayed to the Moon Goddess that my magic was suppressed enough that he wouldn’t notice. “I don’t think I can hide it.” Zira narrowed her eyes and they flashed silver. She placed her hands on the side of my face and I could feel her essence seeping into my body. “No, you can’t do this right now Zira.” She pressed her lips to mine and the sealing of my magic was complete. She pulled back looking shaky and there were more silver strands in her pale blonde hair. “I am your chevalier Calli, it is my job to keep you safe and concealed. He is a strong one though.” Her hands shook as I held them and pressed my forehead to hers. “You are going to be useless to me for the next week, aren’t you?” She snorted and I hugged her. “The Full Moon is in a few days so I can recharge then.” The oppressive feeling of the Alpha grew closer and I looked up to see a tall man that was all muscle and sharp edges. I breathed a sigh of relief to see Cody behind him. Although my favorite puppy was looking grim and all business. “That must be the Alpha.” I grunted and made sure my magic was suppressed. Cody looked confused and I saw him scent the air. “Looks like the puppy is confused. I would say it worked. Come on we were going to have to deal with him eventually.” I swallowed past the lump in my throat. The door opened and the two men walked in. “Hello, welcome Out of the Blue Investigations, how may we help you.” The mountain of the man removed his glasses and his gaze zeroed in on me. “I’m here to help you.” His voice trickled down my spine and made me clench my thighs together. It was the fact that his voice was deep and baritone and sexy. It had nothing to do with his Alpha machismo. “Oh, but we aren’t hiring.” He sat down on the couch and crossed his legs. His jeans pulled against his thighs and I could feel his eyes studying me. “See I told you she was funny. Callisto, Zira, this is our Alpha Dante Alvarez.” Cody was somewhat oblivious to the tension in my room. My poor clueless puppy, if he only knew what Hell he brought to my doorstep.
