Running Away
ONE: Running Away
Running for your life has many advantages.
1. Your cardio is in amazing condition.
2. Your legs look awesome in shorts.
3. You are always looking forward, so you never have to look back.
“You’re doing it again.” I blinked and stared at Zira, she was flipping through a magazine and kept glancing at her phone.
“I’m doing what? How do you even know what I’m doing?” She sighed and put the magazine down.
“You’re making weird lists in your head. The next one is probably going to be about the perks of being disliked by the local pack.” She examined her manicure while I shot her a bland look.
“It helps me relax. Besides, shouldn’t you be checking on the progress of the information dump?” Glancing down at the phone again she showed me the screen. It was at one hundred percent.
“Aren’t you supposed to be keeping a low profile? How is working with the federal government keeping a low profile?” I smiled at her and went back to looking through the files on my desk.
She was right, I was the last Omega in existence. Our kind was hunted to extinction because we held more power than the Alpha’s.
I have no wolf and I managed to hide my Omega powers which is why the packs ignore me mostly.
I am good at what I do and that is finding people and solving problems. Sure Zira and I don’t work by the book and some of our methods are less than legal.
That’s what makes us the perfect team. She is also the one who helps suppress my Omega powers.
Every Omega had a chevalier-a protector-when the Omegas were wiped out the chevaliers had no purpose and ceased to exist as well.
She was appointed by the Moon Goddess and has been my constant companion since birth.
“This place is perfect; the local pack’s Alpha is never around. Their Beta actually likes me.” She giggled and raised a perfectly arched brow at me.
“You also like him, he gives off big puppy vibes.” I grinned; Cody sure did give off big puppy vibes. He was also cute and had that farmer boy next door thing going for him.
“Plus the local Native tribe keeps the wolves in check they were kind enough to give us this lovely little office on the border between the two territories.” Being in neutral territory worked for us.
The humans couldn’t touch us for fear of angering the wolves, the wolves wouldn’t touch us for fear of angering the tribal council.
The bell over the door rang and I stood at attention as a woman walked in with an older woman leaning heavily on her arm.
I could sense the terror and sadness in them and I wanted to put them at ease.
That was the one thing about being an Omega, we read the room and had to adjust our actions to accommodate the situation.
“Hello welcome! How may we help you.” It was amazing how Zira could go from focused to perky in a matter of seconds.
She was great at dealing with people, I however was not thanks to my Omega genes.
“We heard from Cody that you take on Missing Persons cases.” Bless Cody, he was such a good puppy!
“Yes, we do, how may I help you Ms…” Zira offered a seat to the older woman and rushed to grab her some water. The younger woman sat next to her and dabbed at her eyes.
They must have been from the local reservation; it was odd that they didn’t go to the reservation cops.
“My daughter Lucy Ravenwing has gone missing. She has been missing for three weeks. I told the reservation police but they gave up after twenty-four hours. They claimed she must have run off.” I tapped my fingers on my desk.
That made sense, they also didn’t have the resources to look for a missing person.
“They told me my granddaughter probably ran off, that it happens all the time, the youngsters. They can’t handle life on the reservation.”
“I know my daughter though; she loved her life. It wasn’t perfect but she loved it. She would never run off. We are all that she has.” The mother started to cry and I put a hand on top of hers and tried to ease her emotional distress.
“Do you have any ideas who may be behind your daughter’s disappearance?” Something told me I would regret this case.
I should have listened to my gut.
“Yes, we believe the Alpha of the local pack is involved.” Lucy’s mother looked at me with such hatred that I cringed.
This was not what I needed right now.
I don’t like dealing with pack Alphas.
“Will you take our case? We can pay you; we will even mortgage our trailer if we have to pay your fees. Just please find my daughter.” I glanced at Zira who was lost in thought, I didn’t have to be a mind reader to know she was working on the risk assessment numbers.
“It has been three weeks though. I, well I can’t guarantee that I will find her alive.” When our missing cases became recovery cases it was heartbreaking for all of us.
“I am well aware of that. I don’t care I just want my Lucy back home and justice for her.” Sighing, everything was telling me to turn this case over to someone else.
Even the anxious stares that Zira was giving me told me I should just hand the case off.
“Ms. Ravenwing, we will take your case. I hope we can bring your daughter back home.” Zira sighed heavily.
I was an i***t.
