By 5am, I had showered and gotten dressed in a blue dress Zelda had picked out for me. She did my makeup and my hair. If it wasn't freaking five in the morning I might have smiled at the pretty girl staring back at me in the mirror, but I was tired and I felt suffocated.
I grabbed my phone and left the room behind Steve, one of the house helpers. Apparently the trip to Xavier’s grandmother would last more than a day, and so Zelda packed a bag.
“It's gonna be so boring without you,” Ophelia sulked as she put her arm around my shoulder. “I'm gonna be home alone.”
Ophelia was the female version of her brother. They looked the exact same. Their personalities however, could not have been more different.
“I'll be back soon,” I assured her as she walked me out.
Xavier and Christopher were outside, talking by the car when we approached them.
“Luna,” Christopher beamed as he turned to me. “We meet again.”
I gave him a thin smile. It was way too early to be giving out genuine smiles. It was 5am and I hadn't had any coffee.
“What are you supposed to be?” I asked him. “Some kind of henchman?”
“Beta,” he corrected me gently. “You can always rely on me and my wife Nora for anything at all Luna. You must get going. I wish you a safe trip. “
“Call me when you get there okay?” Ophelia said as she gave me a hug.
“I will. Bye.”
Christopher opened the car door for me and I hopped in beside Mr Grumpy. Not even a good morning.
Douche.
Soft music played on the radio as we drove down and away from the pack territory. We passed by Randy and Nora's house. I tried to catch a glimpse of either of them or anything at all, but Xavier sped by.
I looked down at my lap, tears suddenly in my eyes. I missed my dad. He lied to me and he left me with these strange people with strange customs in a new and strange world, but he was still my dad.
“My dad said I was part wolf,” I looked up at Xavier. “Is that true?”
“Considering that your father said so, it would be true wouldn't it? Why do you think I call you Hybrid?”
I ignored his mocking tone.
“But…I don't…I've never turned into an ani—a wolf.”
He looked down at me. “Hybrids sometimes have a hard time shifting. It could be deadly. Some shift easily, some occasionally, some never at all.”
I turned my eyes back on the road as he continued speaking.
“You are connected to your wolf. That's all that matters.”
“I'm not. I don't have one. Randy said she died when I was six. Some kind of trauma from a car accident,” I explained.
Xavier nodded quietly. “I see.”
I cleared my throat. “Can I ask you something?”
“That's already a question,” he said without missing a beat.
God I hated him. I rolled my eyes.
“My actual question was why you refused to reject me and marry the woman you love?”
“Because the pack needs you right now at this time. We're going through a lot. You're our strength. And I'm anything but selfish. It would be wrong to deprive the pack of their rightful Luna.”
I rolled my eyes. “How mighty kind of you Alpha.”
He ignored my sarcastic praise, remaining silent for nearly the next hour.
I was beginning to fall asleep when he turned to me. “Are you hungry?”
I frowned. “Are we still that far?”
“There's two hours to go.”
I groaned aloud, and Xavier watched me with a raised brow.
“I can't go for another two hours,” I looked up at him.
He stared down at me for a little too long, and I averted my eyes.
“There's a diner up ahead. We'll have breakfast.”
Even when he offered to have breakfast it sounded like a threat.
I nodded. “Okay.”
We stopped at the diner. The interior of it looked like a 50s movie set, red and white tiles and everything. This was the exact kind of place captors took the girls they had kidnapped in movies too. The customers consisted of truck drivers who were too tired to give a f**k about some hostage. Xavier suddenly grabbed my hand tight. I looked at him, frowning.
“What the—”
“If you even think of running, I'll kill you.”
He said it so casually it made my skin crawl. I shrugged my arm away.
“I won't.”
We sat at a table in the corner. Xavier ordered nothing, while I got a large blueberry milkshake, a burger and loaded fries. He watched me eat, his arms folded.
“You mind looking somewhere else?” I snapped.
I think he nearly smiled. “You're like a pet cat to me, Hybrid. I'll look at you if I want to.”
I scoffed. “You're infuriating. How does your fiance feel about you going away for a whole day with another woman?”
He shrugged. “She understands how I view you. She knows she has nothing to worry about.”
“How do you view me?”
“I just told you. Like a pet.”
I felt my face beginning to redden from anger.
“I'm going to the bathroom. Stay right here,” he instructed me as he got up to leave.
The way he said it was like he didn't think I had the guts to run. He really did see me as weak and stupid, and I don't why the fact that he perceived me that way made me so angry.
I got up and began scanning the room for the waitress. She was nowhere to be seen. Even if I asked her to help, he'd break both our necks. Then I thought of my mother and instantly sat back down. I had no doubt he would kill her as he promised to do if I ever ran away.
Xavier came back from the bathroom and sat down across from me. I ate in silence while he just watched me.
The drive ended up being an hour and a half instead of two. We arrived at a small isolated house in nearly the middle of nowhere, surrounded by nothing but the forest.
Xavier got out of the car and opened the door for me.
Still a douche.
I stepped out of the car and shut the door, following Xavier onto the patio. I felt my skin crawl. It felt like a scene from Wrong Turn. He wouldn't have brought me all the way out here to eat me with his grandma would he? My heart lurched. What if there was no grandma?
“Xavier!” A voice boomed as the door swung open.
An elderly woman came out of the house, a broad friendly smile on her face.
She gave Xavier a hug, and he accepted it, his face still as expressionless as always.
“It's good to see you Alpha,” she smiled at him before turning to me.
“Luna. I am honoured,” she said warmly. “You must be Elara.”
I nodded. “Yes. It's…nice to meet you.”
She just smiled. “Come on in.”
She had the longest hair I had ever seen, falling all the way down to her knees. It was jet black with grey streaks, and her eyes were mature and a deep blue.
She led us to the living room, gestured for us to take our seats. It was a very cozy house, with ornaments and family photos, mostly consisting of a handsome man throughout the years, possibly her husband. I wondered where he was.
“I'm so glad you could make it, Luna,” she sat on the couch across Xavier and I. “The Alpha failed to mention how beautiful you are.”
I laughed nervously. “Thank you Mrs…?”
“Call me Mary, please.”
I smiled. “Thank you Mary.”
“It is good to see you grandma,” Xavier said as he smiled a little.
“Likewise Alpha. You seem to forget of my existence at times.”
He was about to speak when she went on. “I know. Being Alpha is a full time job. I'm just happy our beautiful Luna here can perhaps visit me once in a while.”
“Of course,” Xavier answered on my behalf. “She needs to spend a lot of time with you to become the best Luna she can be.”
“It's in her blood,” Mary smiled as her eyes landed on me once again. “She'll be a fine Luna. I can feel it.”
“She still needs guidance. She's human. Well she's a hybrid but her wolf went away.”
“The sixth Luna of our tribe was human, Alpha. And what a stellar Luna the elders say she was. As long as Elara is willing to learn, she will do wonderfully.”
But that was the problem. I didn't want to be here. Every second I spent with these people was filled with calculations and escape plans.
“I need to make a phone call,” Xavier got up. “I'll be back soon,” he excused himself.
It was obvious he was going to call Charlotte.
“How do you find the Alpha?” Mary asked as soon as Xavier left.
“What do you mean?’ I blinked.
“I understand you want to leave and go back home,” she crossed her legs.
“He threatened to kill my mother if I do,” I said quietly.
“He won't. He is incapable of ever hurting you like that. Mates have a speaial kind of connection, my dear. You may not understand it, but to Xavier, you are his life partner.”
“Yet he's marrying some blonde bimbo,” I snarled before my hand flew to cover my mouth. “I didn't mean to say that.”
Mary laughed. “Charlotte is a sweet girl. However what they are doing is wrong. Don't worry. I'll talk some sense into him.”
“I just wanna go home, Mary. Please.”
She smiled sympathetically. “This is your destiny, Luna. This is where you're supposed to be. Trust me.”
I sighed softly, looking down at my lap. I suddenly got the unshakeable feeling that I would be trapped with these people forever.
