Chapter 2

“I miss you too mom,” I smiled as I laid on the bed on the phone with my mother. She sighed. “The house is so dead without you. I'm bored out of my damn mind. And that boy—what's his name—Dan? He won't stop coming by the house asking for you! I clearly told him you'd be gone for the whole summer!” I chuckled, playing with my hair. Daniel. I had liked him ever since we were in kindergarten. He used to be sweet and shy and sensitive. By the time we got to high school, Daniel became one of the popular kids. I wasn't really shocked. He was freaking beautiful. So when he asked me to prom instead of Jess, I was beyond shocked. We started hanging out more, and even if we weren't dating yet, I knew he'd ask me out as soon as I got home. He probably would've done it before I left if I had told him I was going away, but my vacation to Portland was unplanned and sudden. “How's Paris?” I asked about my cat as I turned over. “Poor thing scratches at your bedroom door every day,” Mom laughed. “She might miss you even more than I do.” “That's impossible. Hey mom, the craziest thing happened a few nights ago. So I'm taking a walk in the woods—” “Elara, come on! Have you learned absolutely nothing from all the true crime shows we watch?” “Mom, listen. Something was chasing me. It was a wolf.” She gasped. “Elara!” “I know! I tried to tell dad, but he didn't believe me. He said it must've been a deer. It disappeared before dad could see it but I know what I saw mom.” “Honey if you're right then it's probably not safe for you to wander off on your own. Stay in the house where it's safe.” I combed my fingers through my hair. Looking out the window. Maybe it was a deer. A big dog at most. There's no way Nora and Randy had been living here all this time and didn't know there were wolves around. “You know what? I probably imagined it. It could've been just a dog,” I sighed. “Probably. Randy would've probably mentioned that you should beware the wolves if there were any. But just in case, carry around the bear spray I got you. And if staying indoors gets boring I don't mind coming to get you.” “Thanks mom.” There were two taps at my bedroom door before it cracked open. Nora poked her head in. “Hey, we should probably get going now,” Nora smiled. I lightly slapped my forehead, my phone still pressed to my ear. “Dinner. Right. I forgot. You guys go on without me. I'm tired anyway.” “Are you sure?” she tilted her head. “We'll be gone for a while.” I shrugged. “It's okay. Got a book to sink my teeth into.” She nodded. “If you insist. See you soon!” She called out as she left. “Bye!” “Was that Nora?” Mom asked casually. "Yeah." "She seems nice." I rested my head on my hand against the window seal. "I guess." “You shouldn't feel guilty of liking her. It's not her fault your father and I didn't work out,” Mom said suddenly as if she was reading my mind. I wish it was that simple. I felt like I was betraying her. I looked back out the window. The sun was setting, and it wasn't quite dark yet. “I know. I'll call you tomorrow. Love you.” I got up, grabbing my jacket and leaving the room. “Love you too honey. Bye.” When she hung up I shoved my phone into my pocket and headed out. If there was really nothing to be afraid of in the woods then a little exploring wouldn't do any harm right? I just had to convince myself that I was completely out of it that day and seeing things. Just a walk into the forest and back. If I saw nothing, I would finally be able to sleep at night without feeling like something was watching me. With my bear spray in my jacket pocket I was confident. There's no way it was actually a wolf. I had imagined it. Right? After I felt like I had walked deep enough I stopped. I waited, and waited and waited. No wolf. I took a deep breath and pulled out my phone. ‘Okay. No wolf in the woods. Officially crazy,’ I texted Jess. I turned to head back to the house. It was dark now, but the full moon lit up everything like it was daytime. Suddenly, I stopped. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up. There it was again. The unsettling feeling of being watched. I paused, trying to listen intently, afraid to turn around. Then, out of the darkness, a low growl rumbled, rippling through the air. Before I could react, a massive shape lunged from the underbrush, its eyes a fiery amber. Wolf in the woods! I repeat, wolf in the f*****g woods! There was a freaking werewolf growling in my face! It was huge, bigger than the ones I saw on National Geographic. I felt all the air leave my body. I froze, terror rooting me to the spot. I closed my eyes. Well technically this was all my fault. If I had just stayed in the house like anyone with freaking common sense would have, I wouldn't be in this situation. I braced myself for the pain. Just as I thought it was the end, a blur of movement burst from my right, colliding with my attacker. My body was thrown hard against a tree. I didn't have time to react to the pain. I immediately turned over, turning to the massive beasts fight in front of me. The growls made my entire body vibrate. Run you f*****g i***t! I wanted to, but I couldn’t. My body stayed frozen in place. All I could do was just watch. It was the most terrifying thing I had ever seen. Why was this wolf saving me? The second werewolf was larger, its fur was this glossy brown colour. The fight didn't last too long, and the other wolf soon ran off. I thought I was going to piss myself when the wolf slowly started to walk towards me. He didn't save me. He just wanted to eat me himself! The werewolf's snarl reverberated in my chest, and I stumbled backward, my heart racing wildly. Suddenly, the most disturbing thing began happening. The wolf began to shrink and transform. I felt nauseous but I couldn't look away. The wolf was gone, and I was staring at a man, completely naked. What the f**k?! The bile that was stuck in my throat came spluttering out I whimpered. The wolf—no man—no, whatever the f**k he was, his face was just blank. Is this the right time to start begging? “Elara!” It was Randy. I gathered all my strength, hurriedly picking myself off the ground. The wolf man stepped back, his bones began cracking weirdly again. I began running, following the sound of Dad's voice. “Elara!” He shouted as I finally spotted him, his arms spread out. I didn't stop running, tears and snot streaming down my face. “Dad!” I screamed, “we have to go! Now!” But Randy began running towards the wolf. “Dad no!” I cried as I tried to grab his jacket but it was no use. "Dad stop!" Just when I thought I would watch my father get snapped in half by a supersized wolf, the cracking of bones happened again. My knees gave out, and I fell to the ground. I felt my heart stop as I watched two wolves growling at each other again. Randy was a wolf man too.
