Chapter 1

1484 Words
"See that ugly woman? Coming out in the middle of the night. It scared the hell out of me." "That's right. She's as ugly as sin. I don't know what's wrong with Mr. Campbell marrying her." Two maids pointed at Tina Collins as they walked past the stairwell. She subconsciously covered the left side of her face and silently wiped the photo frame with her head down. When the footsteps were far away, she heaved a sigh of relief. A bitter smile appeared on her face. She had heard this kind of comment for a full 24 years but still could not get over it. Back then, the old servant brought her back and told her that the birthmark was a gift from God. She was convinced that she had been blessed because she was not only adopted by the Campbell family but also had a chance to stay with their son, Mason Campbell. Such a life hadn't even appeared in her dreams. Unfortunately... She looked at the family portrait in the photo frame. The man standing in the center had a serious look on his chiseled face. The black handmade suit set off his refined temperament, but the glint from his eagle's eyes penetrated her heart. Ding... A sudden sound from her phone startled her. As expected, it was a message from Mason. He was the only person who could contact her through this phone. "Come to the hospital. Grace needs your blood." Her fingers trembled, and the phone almost slipped off. She had just been in the hospital to donate her blood to Grace Donovan last week. It was not like she was made of iron. She took a few deep breaths and then called the man. "Mason, I..." "Where are you?" asked the man in a cold voice. Met with her silence, he stressed his tone, "Where are you now? Don't forget our agreement. You'll be at my beck and call. There will be consequences if Grace's treatment is delayed." She fought back her grievances. "I… I'm almost there." She lowered her head and stroked her slightly bulging belly. "Mason, there is something important I want to tell you. I..." "Come over and talk." The phone was hung up. She listened to the beeps from the phone. Her mind was vacant, and her spirit dampened. She was pregnant. It was Mason's seed. Back then, when he got down on his knee and proposed to her, he swore that he would love her with his life and would never leave her. It turned out to be a lie. He was just coveting her rare blood type. To save Grace, he had used her as a walking blood bank, and their engagement was based on nothing but a contract. He hadn't paid any attention to her. "Baby, see? This is your daddy," she muttered, pointing to the man in the photo. Her tears fell. She wiped them with the back of her hand and smiled dully. The hospital was quiet in the middle of the night. Tina teetered out of the blood donation room with a pale face. Standing outside, Mason had no intention of helping her but darted a cold look at her. "You can go back. I'll call you when you're needed again." He walked away but turned back as he remembered something, "Take the stairs. Grace was unhappy to see you in the elevator." He then went off without waiting for her response. Tina knew that she should give up, but reluctance drove her to follow him. Mason entered a VIP ward, went to the bed, and dropped a kiss on the woman's forehead. "Grace, the blood is ready. You're gonna be fine." "Mason, it's all my fault." The woman lifted her sickly face and gave a guilty smile, "How I wish I were not in such a condition. I'm a burden to you. You should just give up on me." "Nonsense. I'll never do that. I'll marry you when you recover." Her happy face stung Tina's heart. She ran down the escape way like a scared hare. She couldn't bear to stay there for another second. She was the one who married Mason. Even though he was just using her, she was his wife and pregnant with his seed. How could he agree to marry another woman? Shame and indignation struck deep in her. By the time she came to her senses, she found herself already out of the hospital in a dim alley. Just as she was hesitating whether to call Mason and tell him about her pregnancy, two figures dashed out from behind her. A rough hand covered her mouth, and a strip of black cloth blindfolded her. "Help! Help..." She cried for help but suddenly felt sleepy. Before she passed out, she heard a vague voice. "Eric, it's done. Be quick with your action. We're going to make a big deal." Faint sobs came into her ears. Tina's fingers moved, and she started to come around. After opening her eyes, she found herself lying on the concrete floor. The surroundings were unfamiliar and shabby. The place seemed to be an abandoned warehouse. The sobs came from the opposite direction. A woman was sitting there with her hair in disarray. "Grace?" Tina was stunned. Upon hearing her voice, the woman looked up and accused her, "It was all your fault. If your phone hadn't been snatched away, Mason wouldn't have been tricked into leaving the ward, and I wouldn't have been abducted by them." Tina shook her aching head and deduced from Grace's words that the kidnappers had tricked Mason through a text message from her phone before they took Grace hostage too. "Those kidnappers..." Tina looked around and saw a bonfire lit at the entrance of the warehouse. Two men in black were on guard there. "Ms. Donovan, are you all right? Don't worry. I think they're after money, or else they would have killed us." "I don't need you to remind me of that. Mason will save me!" Tina wanted to continue to comfort Mason's sweetheart. She didn't want him to be upset. Just then, the two men came over and held a phone high. "Mr. Campbell, I'll cut to the chase. We've got your wife and your lover. Which one do you choose?" "Let Grace go, and the 200 million dollars are yours," the man on the other end of the phone said without hesitation. "Good!" The man in black laughed. "Sure enough, Mr. Campbell is rich. Well, are you sure you don't want to save your wife? She looks pitiful and seems to have something to say." Tina sensed the crisis. She thought of the child in her womb and shouted out anxiously, "Mason, I'm pregnant! You… you can save Grace and our child. He's innocent!" "How about you give me another $50 million? I'll release your wife too. It's not a bad deal," said the man in black. After a moment of silence, Mason said over the phone, "My wife is Grace. I'll only save her." Tina's head was spinning the moment the phone was hung up. She was naïve to think that he would save their child, even though he didn't love her. After all, the child was his blood and bones. This was ironic! "Sir, I'm begging you to let me go. You see, I'm of no use. I swear I won't call the police or tell anyone about this. Have mercy, please! My child is innocent." As she was pleading with them, the chuckle of a woman came from behind her. "Ha, what a fool!" After the initial surprise, Tina looked back and saw Grace adjusting her clothes with ease. Her sickly look was all gone. She looked like a different person. "You..." "You still don't see it now? My illness has long been cured, and I've been putting on a show to have Mason's commitment." She leaned over and throttled Tina, "You're not worthy of being Mason's wife. In this world, I'm the only woman who can stand by his side." With that, she flipped her palm and stabbed a shiny knife into Tina's chest. "Go to hell!" Tina's eyes widened in shock as the sharp pain spread to every part of her body. Not until that moment did she understand the meaning of their wild laughter. Grace orchestrated all of this. "With 200 million dollars in our pockets, we'll have nothing to worry about!" "Ha-ha, way to go, Grace. You've got not only the money but also the title of Mrs. Campbell. We're going to live a lavish life abroad." Grace picked up a gasoline bucket from the ground and splashed the pungent liquid all over the warehouse. "Bye, Tina." A fire was set. In the roaring flames, Tina felt that her body was torn apart by a great force. Her consciousness then plunged into endless darkness.
