Chapter 2

Five years later. In the pickup area of the New York Airport, a reporter from a legal news agency looked around and finally spotted a pretty figure in the sea of people. "Ms. Miller!" The reporter rushed over, passed the microphone to the woman, and took her chance to ask, "May I ask if you're going to settle in New York after you come back from Washington? What's your next plan? And what are your views on the New York legal scene?" Talia Miller slowed down her pace. She thought for a moment and said with a smile, "Thank you for your attention, but sorry, it's my privacy. You can contact me on any legal issues, though. I'll give you a discount." Talia handed over her business card. The reporter was dazed but didn't give chase. New York. What a nostalgic place it is! Talia looked around. The familiar scenery fit that in her memories. She came back. Back then, she lost her child, nearly died in a fire, and got disfigured. Later, she changed her face and came back to this sinful place. She was going to take revenge on Mason and Grace. Neither of you will get away. Absorbed in her thoughts, she didn't notice a gaze that had been following her since she came out of the exit. Mason handed his luggage to his assistant and laid his eyes back on the elegant woman. Just now, he had vaguely heard the reporter's questions. This woman seemed to be a lawyer, but her appearance and figure could compare with those of a model. "Sir, the car has arrived, and the preparations have been done per your instructions. You can start the meeting as soon as you're in the office." Mason nodded lightly, asking, "Who is that woman? The reporters are waiting for her. She doesn't seem to be an ordinary person." His assistant looked over. "She seems to be a well-known lawyer from Washington. Oh, I remember. The head of the legal department told me yesterday that an outstanding female lawyer would come on board today. I think it's her." "Really? She'll join our company?" Mason raised his eyebrows. This is interesting. After Talia finished her registration, the assistant led her to the office. "Ms. Miller, this is the pantry. When you're tired, you can come over to have coffee. This is the gym. Your good figure should be a result of your regular workouts. This is the perfect place for you. And this is the passage to the CEO's Office." Talia looked in the direction pointed out by the assistant. The CEO's Office. It should be Mason's territory. When she was his wife, she hadn't been here before. She recalled the past and felt sad. Just then, the magnetic voice of a man came from behind. "Who is this lady?" The assistant hurriedly bowed. "Sir, this is our new lawyer, Talia Miller. Ms. Miller, this is our CEO, Mr. Campbell." With a smile, Mason held out his hand. "Ms. Miller, I've heard so much about you." Talia gazed at the hand in front of her. In a trance, she recalled his cruelty, and this felt like a joke. "Mr. Campbell, you are young and enterprising." Talia took a deep breath and gave a charming smile, "I've heard so much about the feats made by the CEO of the Campbell Group. You're true to your name. Well, is this a convenient time for you to talk? I know the company has been troubled by unfounded slander. Do you want to hear my opinion?" Mason's heartstrings were struck. To her surprise, this woman was not eye candy. Not long after she got on board, she learned everything about the company. Her professionalism was impressive. "Sure, this way, please." Talia smiled and followed him into his office. Before the door could be closed, a roar came from outside. "Mason! Who is she?" Grace rushed in like a furious lioness, pointing at Talia's nose. "As I said, you shouldn't have any other woman in your office. Tell her to get out!" Mason's face sank. "Grace, don't make a scene. This is our new lawyer, and we have business matters to discuss." "Don't give me that excuse again. I think you don't love me anymore!" Grace cried bitterly, "I don't allow you to be with another woman." It was an awkward scene. Unperturbed, Talia gave an elegant smile. "Mr. Campbell, it seems you have a private matter to deal with first." She turned to Grace and said, "Miss, you misunderstood. This is about business and not like what you think." Grace wanted to say something, but Mason pulled a long face. This woman had disgraced him and could not compare with the elegant Talia. "You should go. This is not a place for you to make a scene." Daunted by his serious tone, Grace wiped her tears and left in dejection. Mason forced a smile. "Ms. Miller, I'm sorry about this. That's my wife, who is also a lawyer in this company. If you don't mind, I'd like to make it up by inviting you to dinner." "Thank you for your kindness, Mr. Campbell." The lights were flickering in the restaurant. Talia had several glasses of wine with Mason, and her skin turned rosy. In the light, she looked even more stunning. Mason couldn't help but glance at her and demurely take his eyes back. Talia was dressed in a red, low-cut, velvet dress and let her blonde hair hang loose. The passers-by were attracted, thinking that she was a big star. Only she knew how long it took for her to recover from the burns. She had endured the pain to get back what she had lost. "Ms. Miller, anything else you want to order? This is the best French restaurant in New York. Do you like their food?" "Yeah. Thank you for your hospitality, Mr. Campbell." Talia beckoned to the waiter and ordered her food in French, "Bonjour, veuillez ajouter une coquille Saint-Jacques pour moi, merci beaucoup." Mason's eyes lit up. "You speak French?" Talia shook her goblet, the burgundy liquid sliding down the wall of the glass and reflecting her ruddy cheeks. "Everyone strives to be the best. As a lawyer, I will face French clients, won't I?" She smiled and leaned over to the man, "My ambition is lofty, just like yours." Mason was captivated by her pretty eyes. He could even smell the unique fragrance from her body. A strange feeling rose from the bottom of his heart. "The Campbell Group is a big stage for your talent." "Then I'll do my best." Talia chuckled, "Well, I'm curious if a man like you has broken a lot of hearts. Is there any woman in your ambition? Is there one you can't forget?" "No." Mason's reply was quick and firm. He had forgotten Tina, who perished in the fire. It made sense since he had never paid any attention to her, not to mention remembered her. Talia snapped back and regained her composure. Only her smile became more meaningful. "It appears you're focused on your career." "Not really." Mason took out his phone and showed her a family photo, "I have a lovely daughter. In my mind, nothing is as important as she is." Talia looked over. The three people in the photo were smiling happily. Mason was holding Grace, and a pretty girl was sitting in her arms. It reminded Talia of her child, who was lost in the fire. That was her child. The burns on her body ached, and her heart was gripped by so much anxiety that she could hardly breathe. With feigned carelessness, she raised her hand to knock over the glass. The burgundy liquid spilled onto the phone, and the screen went off. The picture disappeared from her sight. "Oops, sorry, I didn't mean to." She got up in a hurry and called over the waiter to clean up the mess. Failing to see through her deliberate action, Mason waved his hand and said, "It's alright." A smile crossed Talia's mouth. "Your daughter is so cute. I'd like to meet her." "Sure."
