Chapter 4

Grace shook her head and showed a pitiful look. "I didn't. How could I possibly do such a thing?" She looked at Mason, pinched the corner of his shirt, and shook it, "Mason, you gotta believe me. I would never joke about my health. If I had known that I was healthy, I would have been overjoyed because that meant I could do a lot of things with you." Just then, Patricia Knox stood out from behind her. The sidekick echoed in a hurry as she saw that Grace's scheme had been exposed, "That's right. Ms. Donovan is a simple and kindhearted woman who would never do such a thing." She pointed at Dr. Smith and continued, "What are you up to by doing this? Oh, right. As far as I remember, you didn't work in this hospital. You were fired because of your immorality, weren't you? Now you say this with the sole aim of blackmailing Ms. Donovan, right?" Dr. Smith was taken aback. "No, I don't. What I said is true. I..." "Then let's call the police." She took out her phone to make the call. The police soon arrived, and it was a chaotic scene. Dr. Smith indeed had been fired for his immorality, and he was involved in medical negligence, which was enough to prove certain things. Mason asked the police to get to the bottom of it and chose to believe Grace. At the same time, this incident gave him a wake-up call. Since Grace was diagnosed with the disease, she had been receiving treatment from Dr. Smith. It was impossible that she knew nothing about this. He'd better let someone check the whole thing. "Well, that's it for today. Take a good rest and don't take this matter to heart." Grace heaved a sigh of relief. "Yeah, I know." Outside the ward, Mason stopped Talia. "Ms. Miller, thank you for everything today. If it weren't for you, we would still have been in the dark. And your kindness in donating your blood for Grace is appreciated. As a token of my gratitude, I'd like to invite you to a dinner party held in Washington next week. You'll meet a lot of magnets there who will be helpful in your career." Talia agreed with pleasure. "By the way, do you have any evening dresses for the party?" Talia shook her head. "Nope. I came to New York with light packs." Mason laughed, saying, "Don't worry. I'll take care of it for you." The next day, Talia was taken to a luxury mall, where Mason selected a dress for her in person. For the VIP of the store, the sales clerk took out all the dresses of the season. Talia tried them out one by one. After she came out of the dressing room, her curvy figure was exposed before Mason's eyes, and he was full of praise. "Ms. Miller, you look stunning in these clothes. To have a beautiful lady like you as my companion, I think I'll be a star at the party." "I'm flattered, Mr. Campbell," Talia said with feigned shyness. "No, I mean it. You're gorgeous." She turned around and ran into the dressing room with a coy smile on her face. Once the door closed, her expression was gone in a flash. She took out her phone and dialed a number. "Chad? It's me." After a moment of silence, the person on the other end of the phone asked, "How are things going?" "Not bad. Mason's impression of me is quite good. I'll work harder to gain his trust and favor. By the way, I'll go to Washington to attend a party with him in a week. Figure out a way to send Grace away." "What's your plan?" "Mason's daughter is his soft spot. It will expedite our plans if we work on that girl." "Okay, let's do it." The man lowered his voice and said, "Remember not to be rash. Mason ruined my company with unethical means, and I will make him suffer." After hanging up the phone, Talia let out a light breath. Back then, Chad Blake saved her from the fire and took her to Washington. As he said, he was also a mortal enemy of Mason. With the same goal, the two of them embarked on the journey of revenge. After his company collapsed, Chad had nowhere to go and had to join an intelligence organization on the black market that sold inside information about the nobility for money. She was now also a member of the organization. Mason could wait and see. They would make sure that he suffered like hell. The day before they set out, Mason received a call from Grace, who said over the phone that she was going to visit her parents in a neighboring city and could not take care of Emma. "But Emma has autism. She'll be scared if neither of us is home with her." Grace sounded quite anxious. "Well, I'll ask the nanny to look after her. I have to go. Take to you later." Clutching the phone, Mason furrowed his brows. Talia came into the office and asked about it when she saw his gloomy face. "That's easy. Why don't we bring Emma along to the party?" Mason looked torn. "It's inconvenient to take her to a business occasion. I'll be too occupied to look after her." "Leave it to me. She'll be in good hands, I promise." He was delighted. "Really?" Talia gave a gentle smile. "Yeah. I love kids, and Emma is adorable." "Thank you so much. I'm sure you'll be a good mother, and the one to marry you in the future will be the happiest man in the world." "What about you? Ever considered marrying me?" Mason was stunned by her question, and his heart started to race. Talia gave a chortle. "Just kidding. Bring Emma here to the office tomorrow, and we'll go to Washington together." Emma rarely came to this kind of crowded place. Since they showed up at the party, she had been holding Talia. Talia patted her back and coaxed her. The scene full of motherly love touched Mason. He couldn't help but think of Grace, who lacked patience and often yelled at their daughter. She disliked Emma because of her autism. She was not a good mother. "Mr. Campbell!" A former business partner saw him and came up to say hello, "Is the lady over there holding the child your wife? You're enviable to have such a beautiful wife and such a lovable daughter." Mason intended to explain. On second thought, he smiled and said, "Thank you. My wife is indeed very nice. I really love her." The party went on until ten o'clock. Mason was ready to leave when news came that Talia and Emma had disappeared. "When did it happen?" The waiter was anxious to no end. "Mr. Campbell, we've searched the entire building, but your wife and daughter are nowhere to be seen." Just then, another person ran over. "Mr. Campbell! We've found your wife. She was knocked out by someone." Mason hurried over and found Talia lying at the rockery. "Are you all right?" Talia opened her eyes and shed tears at the sight of him. "Someone took Emma away. This is the address they left behind. According to them, they have a grudge against you, and they need you to go there in person. What should we do?" "It should be done by my enemies. Don't be afraid. I got this." Mason took the address and hurried away. Talia insisted on going with him. Not long after he got out of the car, his head was put in a sack, and he was served with a beating. Mason rolled on the ground in pain. Talia took the baton from Chad's hand. She sneered and hit the man hard. "Alright, that's enough. There will be plenty of opportunities for us to torture him." Chad led his men to retreat. Talia rushed over to a spot not far away and picked up the crying girl. Mason took off the sack and saw Talia in a terrible condition. While she was holding the child, her arm was bleeding from an injury. "Are you okay?" Talia shook her head while crying. "Yeah. Thank God, Emma is fine. Those people tried to hit her, and I did my best to fend them off." "Those bastards!" Mason clenched his fists in anger and said, "I'll find out who they are." He looked at Talia with guilt and shame. Through this, he also saw how tough she was. She was such a good woman. He wanted her to be his wife.
