ELENA'S POV “Get away from me, you ugly bastard,” he snapped, pushing me away. I fell to the floor, my ass hitting hard. Tears cascaded down my face as I ogled at him. He stormed off, laughing as he went. That was the third mate to reject me since I became of age. I remained still, allowing the tears to roll freely. I was in pain. My heart bled so much without remedy. What sort of life did I have? Did I create myself? Why should I be punished for what's not my fault? Everyday, I blamed the moon goddess for making me look that way. I wasn't as beautiful as most girls in the pack. Even the ugly would cry whenever they're compared to me. That's how bad it was. “Rejected again?” Serafi giggled, circling around me. I glared hard at her, my hands tightening into fists. I was burning hard with rage and panting hard as well. “Get away from me!!” “Definitely…” she giggled, pulling her man with her. Serafi used to be my friend until my second fated mate came into the picture. She manipulated him and made him reject me, then took him for herself. Anytime I remember that day, I still feel bitter, enraged. I gathered myself, quickly dusting my behind. It was covered with dirt and gave me a funny look. The sound of the children laughing reached my ears as I went. I was the laughing stock of the pack— Old and young alike. I had grown so used to it, their taunts do not bother me anymore, but what I could never get used to was the ridiculing from my father. That man hated me with his very existence. I often wonder if he was the one who truly gave birth to me. How could someone hate his own child that way? As I approached our house, my heartbeat tripled. Oh, I was terrified. What would he do to me this time? It was getting dark and the sun had begun its journey to the western skies. “Where are you coming from?” A thick baritone voice barked at me. I shivered, words failing me at first. “Am I speaking to a dummy?” It came aloud, louder and more intense. “I'm.. I'm coming—” I didn't get to complete my words when a slap fell on my face. For the third time that day, I staggered and fell. I screeched in pain as I raised my head to my father. “Why are you so useless?” The spite in his voice was loud and clear. “Why would the moon goddess bestow me with such an ugly child? Who exactly do you take after, because I am handsome, and your mother was the belle of the town when she was alive.” I kept mute. What could I have said? Speaking of my mother, she was the most beautiful soul I had ever met. Until her death, ten years old, she had treated me like I was the best in the entire world. More often than not, I would see her fighting with my father over me and the way I was mistreated. Death had been so cruel to take her away from me when I needed her the most. “It didn't occur to you that I would have dinner?” My father's thunderous voice sent me jolting backwards. “I'm sorry Dad. I didn't mean to delay you or anyone else —” A slap fell on my face before I realized it. My face tingled and for a few seconds, I could barely hear properly. “You good for nothing bastard. All you know how to do is to be a slut and sleep around. You're not just ugly and useless, you're dumb as well.” His words stung me. But I was used to them. He had done worse things than that. The moment he returned to his room, I raced quickly to the kitchen to make dinner for him. “Are you alright, Elena?” I heard from behind me while I worked non-stop in the kitchen. The voice was still, I couldn't miss it. It was my brother, Kylie. I smiled at him, gently pulling him closer to me. He was only ten years old and was born a few months before my mother passed away. He seemed rather emotional, tears heavy in his eyes. “Is it true? You were rejected again?” Tears pricked the corners of my eyes. Fighting the urge to cry proved so difficult and unachievable. “Yes..” I whispered. The tears rolled down in large torrents. I couldn't hold it in any longer. He patted my back like a big brother would, but in this case, he wasn't my big brother. We didn't have one. “Why do the moon goddess keep sending these people your way? Can't she just give you your real mate already?” I was silent. I knew there was nothing like a real mate for me out there. My fate had been sealed — I would never have a mate of my own. “Heyyy!!” Father's loud voice boomed through the room right then. We shivered — Kylie and I. “What are you doing with her, Kylie?” My father dragged him away from me like I was afflicted with leprosy and he didn't want him getting it too. “Stay away from her. She's no good, and the more you keep walking with useless people, you become just like them.” “But Dad—” Kylie was soft and tender. A complete opposite of my father. “Elena is my sister, and your daughter too.” “Shut up and listen to me. I am your father and I know what's best. Stay away from Elena. She's not the kind of person you should associate with.” I watched father drag my brother off despite his protests to let him be. I stood, watching everything unfold before me. This life that was mine — I hated it so much and couldn't bear it anymore. There was only one option left to me: Death. As I remained in bed, rolling from side to side, the urge to take my own life grew stronger and fiercer. This wasn't life anyways. This was hell, and even worse. The beatings! The constant reminders that I was nothing but a useless being. The taunting. I wasn't sure I could keep up anymore. My eyes rested on the ceiling fan, then on the piece of cloth I had placed on the floor. I jumped to my feet, my mind made up already. Kylie's voice rang suddenly in my head. “No, Elena!! Please don't do it… don't..” ***** “Elena!!” My father's loud voice jerked me awake. I sat upright, head turning. I didn't end up taking my life last night? Wouldn't it have been much better if I did? “You've grown dead, Elena. So deaf that you cannot hear me calling!” The door flung open just as I adjusted my clothes properly. One second earlier and he would have seen me naked. He grabbed my hair and pulled me off with it. I screeched, struggling to break free from him. “Dad.. you're hurting me..” I cried, wincing hard. He didn't halt and neither was he bothered. “Here she is..” he flung me across the room where three hefty men stood. I was confused. My eyes darted around trying to process what was going on. They grinned, nodding their heads at once. “She isn't bad at all,” I heard one of them say. They didn't look like us, or any pack member. They were rogues!! “So how much would you sell her to us?” “Wait dad. Sell? What are you selling?” My heart raced non-stop as my eyes rested on him, then the rogues. “You heard right. I'm selling you to these rogues. At least, you'll be useful to me this one time.”
