SHADOWS BETWEEN US
Chapter 1: Echoes of the Past
Selene Hart stood at the base of the City Vision Tower project site, her heart pounding with anticipation—and something darker. The early morning light spilled over the skeletal remains of the old municipal building, casting long shadows across the dusty lot. It should have been a moment of triumph. For years, she had fought tooth and nail to get this far, to be taken seriously in an industry that still questioned her every choice.
Selene Hart, twenty-seven years old, was a rising star in architectural design. Known for her visionary urban projects and fearless voice in male-dominated boardrooms, she had built her firm—Hart Design Studio—from the ground up. Every inch of her success had been carved from resistance. People called her intense, stubborn, brilliant. She wore all three like armor.
But the moment her eyes landed on the last name in the email confirming the project's lead collaborators, her stomach dropped.
Adrian Cole.
Even seeing his name in text made her jaw clench.
Adrian Cole was the man who once nearly destroyed Selene's career. At twenty-nine, he was already a legend—founder of Cole & Partners, the youngest recipient of the Royal Design Award, and a figure known equally for his architectural genius and emotional detachment. His buildings were as cold and clean as his demeanor—geometric perfection with no room for softness.
Five years ago, Adrian had used a clever contractual loophole to take over a commission Selene had spent a year developing. The Lexington Tower. Her Lexington Tower. Since then, she'd refused to speak his name aloud, let alone imagine being in the same room.
And now?
She'd be working with him.
"Unbelievable," she muttered under her breath, folding her arms tight across her chest as if it might shield her from the oncoming storm.
"Likewise," came a voice from behind. Smooth. Steady. Irritatingly familiar.
Selene turned, her spine snapping straight. There he was. Adrian Cole. The man himself, dressed like the cover of an architecture magazine—tailored dark grey suit, collar crisp, not a hair out of place. He held a leather-bound sketchbook in one hand, his other tucked casually into his coat pocket like he owned the damn world.
"You’ve aged well," she said, tone flat, eyes hard.
He smirked, slow and deliberate. "So have your grudges."
Selene took a step closer, unwilling to be intimidated. Her voice dropped, low and sharp. "I didn’t think you'd show your face here. Not after what you pulled."
Adrian raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. "What I pulled was a strategic move. You just didn’t see the trap."
"You manipulated that clause. You used a loophole to steal a commission I spent a year designing."
"I used the contract you signed. Don’t confuse strategy with theft."
Her breath caught in her throat, fury clashing with something she didn’t want to admit—a tiny, infuriating part of her that still remembered what it felt like to be drawn to him. Back when admiration hadn’t turned to contempt.
She forced the thought away. "This isn’t about the past," she said, mostly to herself.
"Agreed," Adrian said, stepping beside her and gazing out at the construction site. "It’s about a building. A tower. One that’s going to change this city. Can we be adults for a few months?"
"That depends," she said coldly. "Can you be human?"
Before he could respond, the mayor’s assistant stepped into the site with a clipboard. "They’re ready for you both."
Selene walked ahead without looking back. Adrian followed, his smirk gone.
