Chapter 9: Faultline Hearts The silence between Selene and Adrian had become a living, breathing thing. It wrapped itself around them in every shared elevator, every hushed meeting, every stolen glance in the boardroom. They hadn’t spoken about the rooftop since that night. But the unsaid things hung in the air like unfinished blueprints. Tension flared when they were together — not just from what had happened, but what hadn’t. Selene stormed into the project room late that afternoon, tossing a tablet onto the desk. “This structural detail makes no sense,” she snapped. “It’s two millimeters off spec, and your team approved it.” Adrian raised a brow, calm as ever. “Because we adjusted for the steel expansion rate. I told you we’d need to if the atrium was going to be viable in summer heat.” “You told me nothing,” she hissed. “You made decisions without me again.” “I made a call. Because you were too busy trying to salvage Elias’s mess.” Her eyes flashed. “Don’t you dare throw that in my face.” They stood nose to nose, the blueprints between them now a battlefield. Adrian’s voice dropped, rough with restrained fury. “Every time we get close to something real, you pull away. Then you blame me when the world crumbles.” Selene’s breath hitched. “And every time I trust you, something breaks.” The air was sharp between them, too thick to breathe. Then— He reached for her. Not in fury. But with a gentleness that undid her. His hand touched her waist, tentative. Her heart pounded. “Tell me to stop,” Adrian whispered. She didn’t. Their lips met like flint to steel. But this time, it wasn’t rage. It was raw need. Grief. Longing. They kissed until the blueprints crumpled beneath them, until logic shattered, until the only thing that made sense was the sound of his breath against her skin. And when she finally pulled away, trembling, she said, “This changes nothing.” He nodded, voice hoarse. “Then let it ruin everything.” Outside the glass walls, Naomi watched, unseen. Then turned back to her monitor. Because Dorian had just sent another message.
