Names and Footsteps

Episode 12 – “Names and Footsteps” The city lights reflected off the glass walls of Li Xue’s office as she finally leaned back, exhausted yet alert. Hao Ran stood across from her, hands in pockets, exuding calm confidence. Silence hung for a moment, the kind that brims with unspoken tension. Li Xue finally broke it. “Alright, you’ve told me your background, your bold opinions, even your thoughts on my empire. But you never told me your name.” He smiled faintly, the corner of his lips twitching with a hint of nostalgia. “Hao Ran.” Li Xue blinked, surprise flickering across her face. “Hao Ran…?” Her mind raced. That name… high school… the boy who never spoke to me. He caught her gaze and chuckled softly. “Yes. Back then, I was too scared to even say hello. Now… I finally get to see you close up. Not through rumors or achievements, but the real you.” Li Xue raised an eyebrow, amused despite herself. “Bold words. And dangerous, coming from someone who once couldn’t even say ‘hi’.” Hao Ran’s smile widened. “People change. Or maybe… they finally find courage where it counts.” She studied him, curiosity softening her icy edges. “Alright, Hao Ran… if you’re this bold now, maybe you can survive a short walk outside my office. Think you’re up for it?” He nodded, mock-serious. “Lead the way, Miss Li Xue.” --- They stepped into the crisp evening air. The city hummed around them, neon lights flickering, taxis zipping past. Li Xue walked with her usual precise stride, but Hao Ran matched her pace easily, teasing. “So… after all these years, you finally approached my parents?” Li Xue asked, glancing sideways. Hao Ran shrugged, hands in pockets. “I figured if I waited any longer, you’d be untouchable—like now.” Li Xue smirked. “Untouchable? I’m just… focused. Work, empire, success. Nothing else has space.” “Interesting,” he said, voice softening. “So… no one’s ever been able to reach you before?” She paused, then shook her head slightly. “No. And I don’t intend to start now.” He nodded, eyes reflecting both amusement and challenge. “Fair enough. But it’s curious… high school me would have given anything just to talk to you like this. And now… here I am.” Li Xue chuckled quietly. “You’ve certainly grown bold.” “And you’ve grown… unstoppable,” he replied, not missing a beat. “Still the same Li Xue I admired from afar. Just… sharper. Stronger. Way more intimidating.” She laughed, a light, rare sound that surprised them both. “Intimidating is subjective. I call it… efficient.” They walked on, side by side, words flowing like a river. Old memories surfaced, teasing remarks about high school days, funny mistakes, shared jokes only they could understand. Despite herself, Li Xue felt a flicker—a warmth she hadn’t realized she’d been missing. Hao Ran glanced at her, eyes soft. “You’re still amazing… in a way I never dared to imagine up close.” Li Xue met his gaze, a faint smirk tugging her lips. “And you’re still bold enough to say things most wouldn’t dare. That’s… surprising.” As the neon lights reflected on their faces, both of them walked on—two people from different worlds, yet the same past finally meeting the present.
