Chapter One: The Newspaper That Shouldn't Exist
The newspaper was waiting for Elena Hart before she even reached her apartment. She frowned as she unlocked the rusted mailbox in the lobby of her building. Bills, a supermarket flyer, and a neatly folded newspaper slid into her hands. "That's strange." She didn't subscribe to any newspapers. Curious, she checked the front. There was no company logo. No delivery address. No stamp. Only four neatly typed words. To: Elena Hart A small crease formed between her brows. Someone must have slipped it into her mailbox by mistake. She tucked it under her arm and climbed the three flights of stairs to her apartment. The tiny one-bedroom flat wasn't luxurious, but it was home. A bookshelf occupied one wall, filled with novels, history books, and antique document restoration guides. A potted snake plant sat beside the window, while a half-finished jigsaw puzzle covered the coffee table. Simple. Quiet. Exactly how Elena liked it. She kicked off her shoes and glanced at the clock. 6:42 p.m. Her phone buzzed almost immediately. Lily Calling... Elena smiled before answering. "Happy birthday, old woman!" "Lily." "I'm serious! Twenty-two already." "I'm hardly old." "Speak for yourself." Lily laughed. "So... dinner tonight?" Elena walked into the kitchen, balancing the phone between her shoulder and ear. "You know today's Thursday." "I know." "I have work early tomorrow." "And?" "And archives don't organize themselves." Lily groaned dramatically. "You spend more time with old papers than actual people." "I happen to like old papers." "I know." "You need a new hobby." "I have one." "Reading doesn't count." Elena laughed softly. "Fine." "Dinner tomorrow?" "Tomorrow." "You promise?" "I promise." Satisfied, Lily finally ended the call. The apartment became quiet again. Elena poured herself a glass of water before remembering the newspaper still tucked beneath her arm. She unfolded it absentmindedly. The first thing she noticed was the date. July 30, 2027. She blinked. Then looked toward the digital calendar hanging beside her refrigerator. July 30, 2026. Exactly one year apart. "Printing error?" She shrugged. It happened. Sometimes. She sat on the couch and turned to the front page. Everything inside her froze. A bold headline stretched across the page. BILLIONAIRE CEO ADRIAN KINGSLEY DIES AT 32 Below the headline was a large photograph. A handsome man in a dark suit. Sharp features. Calm eyes. His expression carried the confidence of someone accustomed to being watched. Elena recognized him immediately. Not personally. From the news. Adrian Kingsley. CEO of Kingsley Group. She skimmed the article. "Business leader Adrian Kingsley died late Tuesday night after sustaining fatal injuries..." Her chest tightened. How tragic. She turned the page. Then... Her eyes landed on another paragraph. This time... She stopped breathing. "Authorities have named Adrian Kingsley's wife, Elena Hart, as the primary suspect in the ongoing murder investigation." The room fell silent. Elena read the sentence again. Then again. Then once more. Her own name stared back at her. Elena Hart. She dropped the newspaper onto the coffee table as though it had burned her fingers. "No..." A nervous laugh escaped her lips. "No way." She wasn't married. She had never even spoken to Adrian Kingsley. In fact... She had spent most of her adult life avoiding wealthy businessmen after watching corporate greed destroy her father's small printing company years ago. She wanted nothing to do with billionaires. Nothing. Yet according to this impossible newspaper... She would marry one. And kill him. Her heartbeat pounded in her ears. "This isn't funny." Someone had to be playing an elaborate prank. She grabbed her laptop and searched the date. Nothing. She searched the headline. Nothing. She searched Adrian Kingsley. Hundreds of articles appeared. Successful CEO. Young billionaire. Philanthropist. None mentioned his death. Of course they didn't. He was alive. She looked back at the newspaper. One year in the future. Her rational mind refused to believe it. Someone had fabricated everything. But why? And why use her name? A loud knock interrupted her thoughts. She nearly jumped. Opening the door, she found Mrs. Alvarez, her elderly neighbor, holding a small slice of chocolate cake. "Happy birthday, dear." Elena smiled warmly. "You remembered." "I always remember birthdays." Mrs. Alvarez winked. "No one should spend them alone." Emotion flickered across Elena's face. "Thank you." After chatting for a few minutes, she returned inside carrying the cake. For a brief moment, the strange newspaper slipped from her mind. She made tea. Lit a candle. Opened the window to let the evening breeze inside. Everything felt normal again. Comforting. Safe. Until she looked at the coffee table. The newspaper remained exactly where she'd left it. Waiting. She picked it up once more. This time, she noticed something she'd missed. Near the bottom corner of the final page... Printed in tiny black letters... Was a signature. —The Last Editor No company. No publication. Nothing else. Just three words. A chill crawled down her spine. She folded the paper shut. "I'm done." She carried it to the kitchen. Opened the trash bin. Dropped it inside. "There." Satisfied, she washed her teacup and prepared for bed. By eleven o'clock, she switched off the lights. Sleep came slowly. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the same headline. Billionaire CEO Adrian Kingsley Dies at 32. Sometime after midnight, thunder rumbled outside. Elena woke with a start. Rain lashed against the windows. She sighed, climbed out of bed, and walked into the living room to close one of the slightly open windows. As she passed the coffee table... She stopped. Her breath caught. The folded newspaper lay neatly in the center of the table. Dry. Untouched. Exactly as it had been before she threw it away. Slowly... Very slowly... Elena turned toward the kitchen. The trash bin was still there. She walked over and lifted the lid. Empty. Not a single sheet of newspaper remained inside. Her fingers trembled. She looked back at the coffee table. The newspaper hadn't simply returned. It had never wanted to leave. Outside, lightning split the night sky. Inside the silent apartment, Elena realized something that frightened her more than the impossible headline itself. Whatever had delivered the newspaper... Wasn't asking her to read it. It was making sure she did.
