The day of Chief Coleman and his phone just can’t stop buzzing and ringing and the door to his office seemed to be always open with constant police officers and investigators going in and out almost every half an hour, he can’t eve catch up with his breath with all that is going on around the city, countless crimes and investigations is still been processing and city hall sometimes is on his neck when it comes to public information regarding big crimes, there are numerous of people went missing, murder case here and there, robbery around the city and a few shop lifts on the sidelines.
“Chief? Karen’s here.” one of his police officers with black hair and mocha colored complexion with a little bit shaven jawline peered into his office door, he is about the age of Kate and whenever Kate would drop by he would always be the one to greet her gladly, more enthused even and Chief Coleman knew all along, he just don’t want to interfere into something that has not yet been proven and only hypothetically. His name is special police officer Edward Higgins, one of the youngest and trusted police officer Coleman had in his station.
“Send her in.” he said briefly with his deep and somehow husky tone of voice. When the door next opens his sister who seemed to be freshened up to wherever she’s been and seemed energetic and relaxed which baffles him more, usually she would drop by when something not good going up with her or with Kate but now it’s different, she’s glowing and even look a bit younger. “Something wrong?” he asked.
“Why do you always anticipate that there is something wrong going on? Can’t I just drop by and see if we could grab something to eat?” Karen took one of the sit in front of his desk and waited for his answer, with her eyes like burrowing inside his conscience.
“As you can see I am busy.”
“Come on, when was the last time we went out? We hardly see you this past couple of weeks, you told Kate that you would drop her off this morning but you went ahead of her. We could go and stop by, I bet she’s with Vera right now, the shop isn’t far.” He forgot that he made a schedule to Kate this morning, he was a bit pre-occupied by the cases that is all in his head for the past couple of weeks now. The top of it is about a few missing people and there are only two suspects there are still investigating, it is all about notions and they can’t conduct an arrest because they can’t make a warrant for it, there is no solid evidence against them only guesses and in crime and reports, guesses have no room in it. This is Higgin’s case with his partner special police officer Martha Roberts a brunette and tough police officer who always work her way on top and would often face discrimination because she’s a woman, she’s beautiful and likes Kate like a friend, whenever Kate would visit she would be delighted. Well everybody would be delighted if ever Kate would drop by, she’s drop dead gorgeous but Martha is different and as equal as Kate in her own way. Higgins and Roberts are still working on the case for the longest time and they can’t seem to pinpoint any evidence lurking to their target, it was made by an expert and as clean and clear as crystal. Chief Coleman just want the job to be over and done with so everything will be over and he could retire, this would be his last case he would have to handle anyway.
“Okay, just a quick one we have tons in our pockets.” He likes seeing his sister happy as she almost squeals with excitement which he haven’ heard from her in a long time, which makes him want to get things be over with so he could retire and spend more time with his family as much time as he likes, so that he could no longer miss any details and happenings in their lives, after all they are all he have. Which that fortunate night that changed both their lives for as long as they both live. “Higgins!” he buzz in his intercom. Edward Higgins hurry towards his office with a paper in his hand.
“Yes sir?”
“I am going out for a bit, I’ll be right back.”
“Sure thing sir.” Karen smiled at him as they both pass by Edward and give him a small pat on his shoulder. Karen adores Edward and she knew that he had a thing for Kate, Karen observes a lot and her theories are always correct but she can’t say that Kate feel the same way as well, she see him as a friend or a brother she never had.
The air is very awkward and sitting across with the man whom harassed her makes the atmosphere worse. Adam can’t stop looking at this beautiful woman sitting across from him which he can’t help but think of her spread in front of him while she’s just inches away from him. She can’t keep an eye contact when his stare is so intense and she can’t understand herself why she’s very intimidated by this man, she usually is not like this and she always carries herself with confidence, too confident at times but she never felt intimidated by anyone before and somehow pisses her off, but surprisingly she don’t know how to shake it off.
“What are you really doing here Mr. Gadducci?” she finally spoke, clearing the awkwardness between them.
“It is a mall Miss Coleman, people come and go and please call me Adam.” He flashes a smile at her which makes her stomach churn a bit, butterflies maybe? She would never know. Biting her lip which she usually do whenever she feels nervous or have nothing to say and that makes him even more excited and trying to keep his thoughts to himself and prevent from scooping her from where she’s sitting and take her inside her car and went straight home so he could finally have him to himself. How badly she wanted to kiss those lips of hers and touch her body, how much he badly wants her.
“Adam, I should probably get going.”
“Let me drive you home.” He asked.
“The last time I checked you harassed me, why would I want you to drive me home? In fact I would’ve get you arrested” she still pissed at him, but somehow she enjoys doing this to him, she enjoys the dominance.
“Because I apologize and I sincerely am sorry for that, and I guess your point was being clear when you left my lips cracked open and a pain in the gut earlier. I must say you have quiet an arm Kate.” Licking his lip where he could still taste an iron rust from his blood.
“I drove here so don’t bother.” Grabbing her bag.
“Let me call you then?” he insisted.
“I am very busy.” She protested.
“I am persistent.” He holds her hand as if he is preventing her from leaving.
“Katy?” they both look at the two people going in the cafe, her relief is above the roof when she saw her father and aunt just entering. Adam let go of her hand as he saw the Chief of police and an equally aged woman approached them, then he keeps his distance from them.
“Hi Dad.” Kate kissed her father in the cheek. “Dad, this is Adam Gadducci.” She knows what he thinks of that family name and as of the moment she’s glad she told him, Adam was getting into her nerves and this is the only way that he would keep his distance from her, which obviously worked, she hopes it will work.
“Gadducci? The Gadducci Empire?” Adam knows what he meant, his nose had been in his family’s file for years.
“More like Gadducci publishing sir.” He said softly, with confidence but with restraint.
“I see, the interview went well I presume?” he asked Kate this time.
“It was okay.” She said and looked at her Aunt who is quiet behind his father, then went to the counter and greet Vera.
“I’ll head out Kate, Sir” Adam exits the cafe and went towards the main exit door.
