Chapter 4

MAIA SOLIS I had half an hour to go before delivery and without a very efficient transport system, I adjusted my light and colorful dress for the city, let my hair down trying to look decent. I checked the address again as I took another corner down the street. A huge building appeared before me and people looked at me as if I were going to invade the place. Anyone who passed by wore a delivery uniform or dressed like an executive. I looked at the flower-printed dress I had on again to compare. “Good afternoon,” I said as I got to the receptionist's desk. “Good afternoon. The service area is behind.” She said, paying no attention to me. They always tended to believe immigrants are servants. “Oh, you're so funny. I came to deliver these flowers to Damon Fox.” I said and raised the delivery. “You can leave it here.” She said dismissively. “His grandmother asked it to be delivered in person.” Sofia never said that but I hated the rreceptionist'sapproach. “The grandma?” She asked with round eyes. “One moment—” she picked up her telephone and dialed a number, “—Mariana, Mrs. Sophia sent flowers to Dr. Fox.” “You can go up. But be quiet and use the last elevator.” “Okay,” I said and walked away. The elevator played those annoying little songs and I finally arrived at the penthouse. I was suddenly face to face with the girl in the hallway. I approached the entrance and in an instant, it felt as if my legs gave up on me and I tumbled over with the plant in my hands. Suddenly, a set of large arms held me and prevented me from falling. It felt like a wall. I turned to see who it was and my eyes met a set of beautiful eyes. Damon Fox held me and helped me balance. I was about to thank him but the next thing that came out of his mouth shocked me. “Honey, I thought you wouldn't come.Mr. Hidalgo, this is my bride.” What? Who? “Bride?Sir—” I stutter and he shushes me with a light grip on my wrist and pleading eyes. My body reacted to the warmth of his hand. My face heated the instant his mouth inched closer… a blush found its way to my cheeks. Please don't. I hardly remember the last time I kissed and I'd be terrible if he did. “I decided to come at the last minute. You know how much I missed you my Dammy boo.” I said to him with a smile. I understood everything. “What a lovely woman, Damon. You surprise me!” A man said. I could recognize the accent and turned my face to him. “Are you tired, my love?” Damon asked. Love? “Maia. My name is Maia.” I whispered to him and smiled back at the Spanish man. “I'm sorry about all of this Miss..?” “Maia.” “Ah, yes. Miss Maia. I'm sorry about it. Damon here was very discreet about you.” The Spanish man said. “Is that so? That's just my Dammy boo.” I said without understanding anything. “Will you go with us to the Bahamas?” Damon asked. Bahamas? Is everything a joke to this guy? “Bahamas?” I stuttered. The question came as a shock but I can't let these people before me think I'm stupid. “I haven't been able to talk to her yet, Mr Miguel. Don't worry, we'll get together soon.” Damon said to the Spanish man. So his name was Miguel. He didn't look jovial. “Perfect.” The man looks at the plant in my hands and I remember Miss Sophia's message. “Beautiful plant.” He said. “Beautiful, isn't it?” “Your grandmother asked me to give this to you,” I said to Damon, almost throwing the vase at him. “My grandmother?” “Ms. Sophia said something about the office needing color.” “I hope to see them all together this week, Damon. Miss, very nice to meet you.” I smiled forcefully, facing the man. He headed for the elevator and as soon as the door opened, the blonde woman who ordered the orchid appeared, staring in shock at Mr. Damon's hands on me. “Damon, darling. Did you receive the flowers I sent? Those weren’t the ones I chose.” Her eyes went between me, Damon, and the other people present. As she approached us, I straightened my dress. “Flowers?” Damon asked her. “Baby. She wanted to thank you for the favor you did and send you flowers. But her grandmother also requested it and I ended up forgetting the other arrangement.” “Lauren, what a surprise!” Another man appeared and greeted me as if he knew me and he took the blonde by the arm. “Come on, let's have some coffee.” “I need to get back to business. Maia, will you accompany me?” The other guy takes the blonde and leaves. “See you at my grandparents' house, sir. They will be happy to welcome you.” Damon said and we walked towards the elevator. I didn't have the time to think when Damon dragged me down the hallway to a huge door. I can't see anything as he runs like a sprinter and as soon as we're safe, he closes the door. “I think this is a good time for you to explain to me what's going on, don't you?”
