Mate? Gamma?

Lily POV The line through the gate was something else though, while we were waiting Jax started to get shifty, he could not stop hopping from one foot to the other. I watched him, "Jax, calm down. You are causing people to stare." Jax turned to me, his feline was present in his eyes though, Jax was gone, "Darling please, can't you smell it?" Caspian's voice was like silk as he spoke, "I swear this boy sometimes, he just needs to listen." "Cas? what are talking about, you need to let Jax back out. This isn't the time or place." I was trying to be diplomatic, Cas was one of my best friends, I only have two and they just happen to be the same person, but by Goddess, he was annoying and stubborn. "Darling, he is here, I can't stop, my body is demanding I find him." "He is here? Wait you mean-" "Yes, my mate. I can smell him, it's like strawberries and fresh rain." Okay odd combination of smells, but who am I to judge, we were making our way forward in the line, while Cas was sniffing nearly every male who passed us. Suddenly he stopped, he was silent and unmoving, his eyes were focused straight ahead. I followed his line of sight, it led me to a wolf. He was ousing confidence as he eyed Cas up and down. His green eyes clashing with his blue hair, it was odd to see a wolf with dyed hair, the process messed with a shifter's senses for a few days. So it was uncommon to see. I had never seen Cas so quiet before, he was nervous it was really cute, but we had a mission to complete. I nudged him, "Cas, say something. Cas" The voice that came out was Jax's, "He left, he was so f*****g nervous, he left me. How the hell am I supposed to deal with this?" The wolf was making his way closer, Jax's breathing picking up with his every step. The wolf's voice was deep, "Mate." That one word sent shivers down Jax's spine, "Mate." The two shifters had gathered the attention of the entire line and patrol guards. They were quite a striking pair to look at. Jax was more leaner than most shifters due to him being a werepanther but was still tall at 6ft 2, his blonde hair dangling into his face, his brown eyes twinkled with happiness. His mate on the other hand was towering over him by a good couple of inches, at least 6ft 4. He was packed with muscle, quite typical for a werewolf. His blue hair and green eyes clashing together, but it somehow worked with his sharp jawline. The wolf cleared his throat, "My name is Elijah, but you my dear kitty can call me Eli." Jax's face was in awe of his mate, I pushed my elbow into his side, "You know typically you would introduce yourself now." He blinked a few times and laughed nervously, " ha yeah you're right, umm I'm Jax." Eli laughed, "It is a pleasure to meet you my mate, and who is the lovely lady next to you?" His eyes turned to me with interest, they flicked to black as he took in my scent, his brows frowned in confusion. I smiled at him, "Lily, it's nice to meet you Elijah." I used his full name as a way to show him my respect, shifters appreciated others more when they showed respect and acknowledged the pack hierarchy. I know my scent would be confusing to him, the blockers I had on masked my true scent, you could still smell my scent, but it just smelled off, like something was missing. He smiled at me again, " Eli. Please call me Eli, I hate it when people call me Elijah." "Not a problem, I'm really sorry to do this but-" Jax looked at me, a look of defeat coming across his face, he knew we needed to move his voice shook, "We need to get through the checkpoint, fast. I'm sorry, can I see you later on?" the question hanging in the air. Eli frowned, "You need to get through fast? What could you possibly need to do that is more important than your meeting mate?" Before Jax could answer, I cut in, "We have information for the King about the recent attacks." The attacks were common knowledge at this point, I'm sure the royal council tried to keep it under wraps to start with, but you can only hide so many attacks, towns disappearing and a declaration of war so long before the public finds out. Eli's face took on a serious tone, "About the attacks." Jax sighed, "Yes, we need to meet with him at once. " Eli smirked. "Well aren't you in luck my kitty, allow me to introduce myself properly. I'm Royal Gamma Elijah Hatchel." He bowed at the end of his speech. Jax looked at me in shock, his mate was the Royal Gamma. Holy s**t. Our job just got a whole lot easier. Finally as soon as we pass on our knowledge we can leave here and move on. Well I can at least, I couldn't ask Jax to leave with me not now. Jax stuttered, "You're the Royal Gamma?" Eli looked up, "Yes, follow me, we can talk more inside." He led us out of the line and towards the gate, the gate was stunning, the iron flowed into beautiful star-like patterns. It had a slight silver glow to it, the arch melded in the walls, no joins could be seen. It was reminiscent of home, the magic used to make this gate had to have been powerful. I watched the guards bow towards Eli as he led us through the gate, Jax was next to him eyeing him as they walked, as they passed through the gate, I could see the silver glow stretch out into thin strands, it poked at them as they walked under the arch. I stopped and looked at the gate, how would it react to me, my magic. I moved forward slowly, feeling the thin strands brushing against my own magic, my breath left me. Once I was through it stopped. I gasped for air, trying to recover from whatever the f**k that was. And more importantly why did the shifters have this sort of magic? Something of this level could have only been crafted by a few witches, in fact I could name all four of them, myself included. So where did they get this? I turned to studying the gate, everything else was completely forgotten, the magic it produced was familiar. Where had I felt this power before? I felt a hand on my shoulder, "Lily, come on." I shook my head and looked up at Jax's concerned face, "Right, yeah let's go." I looked over to Eli and saw him looking at me, I couldn't decipher the look on his face. His voice broke me out my thoughts, "Follow me, the King is actually away to attend the annual Council meeting, you will be meeting with Her Highness Princess Calista Hallow, the Royal Beta Female." Okay even better, I could pass my information to the Princess, never having to see the king, and be gone in a few hours. I looked over to Jax and caught him staring at Eli's arse as he walked ahead. I started to laugh, "Enjoying the view." Jax looked up, his face flush at being caught, "I don't know what you are talking about." "So you aren't purposefully walking behind him to look at his arse." Eli's laughter brought us out of our conversation, "Kitten, don't be afraid to look, it's all yours." Jax's face was bright red, I laughed at him, as he punched my shoulder he muttered, "Damn shifter hearing." We continued into the city, people bowing and moving off to the side allowing us to pass. The city was beautiful, the buildings linking together perfectly, the roads and footpaths littered with shifters and other supernaturals. It was calming to be here, that feeling was back, I still couldn't place. It was getting harder to stay focused, and my to keep magic in. I shook my head, locking my feelings inside as we approached the castle.
