Chapter 1..
Chapter 1. Ash on the red carpet The heavy, mahogany double doors of the mansion clicked shut, sealing out the warmth of the chandelier-lit foyer. Outside, the world was a blur of gray shadows and relentless downpours. Arsen stood on the cold stone porch, his lungs burning as the freezing rain lashed against his skin. His lip was split, a thin line of metallic-tasting blood tracing a path down his chin, and his left eye was swelling shut from a blow he hadn't seen coming. Maya stood in the threshold, her designer silk robe contrasting sharply with the sodden, cheap fabric of his jacket. She held a stack of papers—their marriage certificate—with an expression of utter, cold detachment. Without a word, she began to tear the document. It was a slow, deliberate act, the sound of thick parchment ripping apart echoing through the rain like a gunshot. She let the jagged pieces flutter into the mud at Arsen's feet. "You were never more than a placeholder, Arsen," she said, her voice cutting through the drumming rain with surgical precision. "A charity case that overstayed its welcome. Look at you. You are nothing." Before Arsen could find his voice, a man stepped out from behind Maya. It was his father-in-law, his face twisted in a sneer of pure contempt. He didn't say a word. Instead, he leaned forward, gathered a thick glob of saliva in his mouth, and spat directly into Arsen's face. The filth clung to his cheek, a burning reminder of the hierarchy he had occupied for years. "Get off my property before I have you thrown into the gutter where you belong," the older man barked. Arsen didn't move. He felt the cold seeping into his bones, but beneath the physical pain, a strange, crystalline silence had settled in his chest. The crushing weight of years of submission, of trying to be the man they wanted, had suddenly evaporated. The fear was gone, replaced by a cold, hard knot of clarity. He looked at Maya, not with longing, but with the dispassionate observation one might afford a rotted tree in the middle of a forest. "I will not beg," Arsen whispered, his voice raspy but surprisingly steady. Maya laughed, a shrill, brittle sound. "You don't have to beg. You just have to leave. You have no money, no connections, and no dignity left. Go, Arsen. Let the city finish what we started." She slammed the door. The sound vibrated through the stone floor, a final punctuation mark on three years of his life. Arsen stood there for a long moment, the rain plastering his dark hair to his forehead. He reached up, wiping the filth from his cheek with the back of his hand. He wasn't crying. His vision, though hampered by the swelling eye, felt sharper than it had ever been. He turned and began to walk. The path toward the gate was long, the gravel biting into the worn soles of his shoes. Every step was a battle against the lethargy of his injuries, but with every meter he put between himself and the mansion, he felt lighter. The world around him—the wet asphalt, the neon lights of the distant city reflecting in the puddles—felt like a playground of potential. He reached the edge of the estate, standing under the dim flicker of a streetlamp that barely pierced the gloom. He was utterly alone. He had no plan, no food, and not a single cent to his name. He reached into his pocket, his fingers brushing against a worn, plastic-cased burner phone—the only thing he had managed to keep when they tossed him out. His hand trembled, not from the cold, but from the raw, simmering adrenaline of his survival instinct. He looked up at the dark, weeping sky. Whatever happened next, he knew with absolute, terrifying certainty that he would never be the man who walked through those gates again. He was forged in the fire of their betrayal, and he would come out as something they wouldn't be able to ignore. Just as he turned toward the main road, the burner phone in his pocket erupted with a shrill, electronic vibration. Arsen stopped. He pulled the cheap device out, the screen lighting up his palm with a stark, unnatural glow. There was no caller ID, only a string of numbers that looked like a military encryption code. He stared at it for a heartbeat, his thumb hovering over the accept button. The rain continued to fall, drenching the street and the broken man standing in the dark, but the silence was broken. He answered. "Who is this?" A voice, calm, gravelly, and unmistakably powerful, hummed through the speaker. "The chains have been broken, Arsen. The estate is gone, but the legacy is waiting. Are you ready to claim what was stolen from your bloodline?"
