I run the underground art market and the money that moves through it. For five years, I trusted my husband, Julian, to guard both. Tonight, as he fastens my sapphire necklace, I hear a countdown inside his head. He plans to plant a forged masterpiece, frame me for the fraud, and give my network to his mistress. The exhibition is already under way. So is his plan.

Chapter 1 The Canvas of Lies
The sapphires were cold against my throat. Julian closed the clasp with careful fingers, the same fingers that had traced my spine that morning. He had done this before every private exhibition for five years. The words never changed either. "For my brilliant wife. The only masterpiece here tonight that I can truly call mine." Then a second voice reached me from inside his head, counting down with the clean rhythm of a metronome. *Three hours until the Midnight Rose goes to auction. Two hours until the anonymous tip is made. One hour until Elena Rostova, the untouchable Curator, is arrested for masterminding the largest art fraud and money laundering scheme in a decade.* I kept still. In the polished obsidian wall, my reflection looked composed. Tailored criminals notice fear quickly, and I had spent years giving them nothing to notice. Julian had built the Rostova network beside me. Now he had arranged my arrest. "Is the necklace too tight, darling?" He studied my face. *She’s pale. Good. The shock will make her less likely to notice any flaws in the plan.* I met his eyes in the reflection. "No, Julian. It's perfect." He knew every habit I had, including my refusal to drink before a final appraisal. Five years of intimacy had become part of his working file on me. Beyond the one-way glass, oligarchs, cartel leaders, and disgraced royals filled the main gallery. They came to turn dirty money into beautiful objects. On the far wall, under a single spotlight, hung the lost *'Midnight Rose'*. The painting was a forgery. Weeks ago, I had found tiny inconsistencies in the canvas weave and blamed a rival testing my eye. Under gallery lights, the copy was good enough to fool nearly every collector in the room. I had checked the restorers, handlers, and rival houses. I had never checked Julian. My eyes scanned the crowd and then froze. There, standing near the painting, was Chloe. My former apprentice. My personal assistant. And she was wearing my mother's dress. My mother had designed that one-of-a-kind gown before she died. Julian and I had promised to keep it in our private collection. Now his mistress wore it in public. Julian followed my stare. *Chloe looks like a true queen in that dress. Far better than Elena ever did. Soon, this will all be hers. The penthouse, the collection, my name. She’ll be the new Curator, and I’ll be the king.* The clasp pressed into the back of my neck. I slipped one finger beneath it, then lowered my hand before Julian could notice. He had taken my mother's last dress out of storage and put it on Chloe. "I should greet our guests," I said. "They're getting anxious." Dozens of thoughts hit me when I entered the gallery. I caught fragments of greed, envy, and l**t. *'I'll bid ten million, but I know it's worth twenty. Julian’s a fool if he lets it go for less.'* *'Marisa’s collection is the only thing keeping the Falcone family legitimate. If she goes down, the whole structure crumbles.'* *'I wonder if she’s as cold in bed as she looks.'* I pushed through the noise until one quiet mind caught my attention. Victor Falcone sat in an alcove beside the service exit. Julian's cousin had lost the use of his legs and his claim as Falcone heir in a car crash three years earlier. Since then, Julian had treated him as a family embarrassment, mocking him in public and using the crash as a warning to anyone who challenged the succession. Victor was easing a heavy champagne crate onto a trolley. Julian's earlier thought returned to me: *'At least the cripple is good for something.'* I listened, expecting anger or self-pity. *The fake is in place. The old fools are restless. Julian is about to light a match he can’t control. Good. My own game starts tonight. Three years of this damn chair. It ends soon.* Victor knew about the forgery. He was waiting for something of his own. I almost smiled. Julian had dismissed the one man in the room who already knew his secret. I passed Julian's outstretched hand and Chloe's smirk. At the bar, I picked up a flute of champagne, breaking the rule Julian knew so well. My eyes locked with Victor’s across the crowded room. I raised my glass in a silent toast. Victor glanced at the glass, then back at me.
