Pounding echoed through his apartment in counterpoint to the pounding in Zeke’s skull. He groaned and turned, burying his face in the soft feathers of Haziel’s wing. It scratched funny against his cheek. Zeke blinked open his gummy eyes and instead of the creamy rainbow he expected, vivid blue swam in his vision. Reality crashed around him and his throat constricted. The banging came again. Zeke wanted to ignore it, wallow in misery until he didn’t wake up with the phantom of Haziel all around him, but then Jim yelled his name through the door.
