Chapter Thirty-seven
The extra hour of Gayline meant more than an extra hour of time needed to produce the show. We had to prepare in the afternoon and into the evening because our mornings were filled with scheduled airtime. Listening to an entire air check was out of the question. We fast-forwarded our cassettes to the important moments to hear how our scripts went over, and rather than lament the lost “could have” or “should have” saids, we wrote down the funny lines for use at a later date.
From a practical standpoint, we couldn’t script more than a short part of the whole show. The rest was impromptu banter fed by the subject at hand. The quality of our callers improved. I patched through many first-time callers who offered refreshing ideas, and our audience was much more likely to
