Chapter Thirty-eight Jenny and I walked along the beach in Del Mar. Locating a parking spot had been a challenge during Spring Break, but our toes called out for the gritty feel of sand beneath our feet. The air was a little cool for sunbathing, but that didn’t stop the tourists and locals who staked out a square of beach trying to get the first tan of the season. Their pasty white bodies lay in uneven rows on patterned towels of myriad colors. As gulls cried overhead, we wound our way through the crowds and waded a few inches into the chilly water of the Pacific.
