Ashton
"Why don't you tell me why you hate witches so much?" Alexi asked. She was sitting across the table from me, staring at me expectantly. This was not a conversation you had on a first date, especially not for us. We were on shaky ground as it was. This could end badly. I gulped.
"It's okay, I just want to understand you, you can ask me anything too," she said, taking my hand and looking at me reassuringly.
I sighed, "Okay, well…" Just then, the waiter came and set our food in front of us. She quickly left, and Alexi nodded at me to continue.
"Well, it was twelve years ago when I first met my first witch, Angelica. She was a fire witch..."
Ashton 12 years ago...
"Catch me, catch me!!" I yelled. I was playing with my dad in the forest behind the packhouse. There was a lake not too far from where we were playing, and I decided to jump in and hide underwater.
I kept my eyes open and saw my father run past the lake with a smile on his face. I could hear him yelling, but I couldn't quite make out what he was saying because of the water.
When he was gone, I quickly got out to hide inside my secret tree. I was a huge tree that had a tunnel-like hole in the stump. I got there, but there was already someone else hiding in it.
It was a girl. She looked around my age, she was crying. "Hey, are you okay?" I asked, I reached out to put my hand on her shoulder and she screamed. I jumped back, startled, and she began to cry harder. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, okay don't cry". She looked up at me, and I gasped. She had pink eyes. I've never seen anyone with pink eyes before.
"Ash, where are you?" I heard my dad yell, I looked back at the girl. She was pale with freckles that dotted her whole face, and light red hair. She looked scared. "Over here, dad help".
"Are you okay?" I repeated. I held out my hand for her to take and she did. "My parents are gone," she said. My dad rushed over and grabbed me. "Ash, what's wrong, are you okay?" he asked, running his hands over me frantically looking for injuries. He saw the girl standing there and gasped. "You're a witch," he said. My eyes widened as I stared at her. I'd never seen a real witch before.
My dad's eyes narrowed. "Where is your coven?" he asked sternly. "Gone sir" she whispered. My dad's eyes softened, "and your parents," he asked, "also gone, sir."
"Is there anyone with you?" he asked. "No sir, it's just me," she said before she started crying again. I looked at my father, and he sighed, "Come child, we'll take you back to our house."
"But this is a wolf pack and wolves hate witches," she said. I laughed. My father gave me a stern look. "Who told you that?" he asked, "my parents, sir".
He huffed. "Well, not to sound rude, but your parents were wrong. Sure, some wolves do and some may be wary, but you'll find that most do not, and what really matters is one's heart, not their species," he said. I nodded. My father taught me and my sister that one's true character relies on their actions, not what they are. I thought everyone knew that.
My father made her come back with us to the packhouse, and set a room up for her before he asked me into his office. "Listen son, we don't know what this girl has been through. I want you to watch out for her, and show her around. You hear, She's your responsibility." I nodded my head eagerly. "Of course, father, I won't let you down," I said. He smiled. "I know you won't, you never do," He said, patting my head. I smiled.
It took a few weeks to get her to open up to me, but we soon became fast friends. She even liked hanging out with Lucas and Jacob. "Hey" she said after finally catching up with me. We were racing on a hill, and I kept beating her. "I heard that some packs have special grimoires passed down from your moon goddess. Is that true?" I looked at her surprised.
"Where did you hear that?" I asked. "I..um heard some kids talking about it yesterday when you were at your alpha lesson", she said. I hummed. Dad said we weren't allowed to talk about it because bad people might come looking for it. I frowned. "What, you can tell me, I'm just curious. I still don't know that much about wolves," she said. That was true. She has been here for two months and still doesn't really know anything about our customs.
I thought about it. Well, I'm sure dad wouldn't mind. He really likes Angelica too. He always said he thought of her as another daughter. "Well, I don't actually know that much about them, but I do know that it's filled with ancient spells that only a certain kind of person can read," I said. "What do you mean by a certain kind of person?" she said eagerly. I looked at her shocked. She usually wasn't this interested in things.
She laughed at my expression, "I'm a witch. Remember it's only natural that I am interested in magical things, silly" she said, creating a ball of fire in her hand to prove her point. I marveled at the ball until she closed her hand and made it disappear. I chuckled. I guess that's true. I always forgot she was a which because she doesn't use magic that often.
"I don't know what kind of person can read it, but legend said the last person to ever be able to read lived over one thousand years ago and was a hybrid of a werewolf and a witch," I said, giggling, then I blushed, realizing what that meant. I like Angelica, but mom said I wasn't old enough to date and that I should wait for my mate.
"I see," she said, "well, where do you keep it." I shook my head, "I don't know if we even have one, Dad just told me stories about it," I said, she huffed. I looked at her questioningly and she quickly fixed her face. "Come on, I'll race you to the top of that tree," she said before taking off running.
We spent the rest of the day climbing trees and rolling down hills, "Ashton" she said out of breath. "Yeah?" I asked, "I hope you realize how special you and your family are. You guys are one of a kind and nothing like I thought you'd be," she said, looking down with a frown on her face. I stared at her.
"What do you mean?" I asked, why was she saying something so cheesy. "I just...I appreciate everything you and your parents have done for me, and you're literally the best friend I've ever had," she said all in a rush. I smiled. I didn't know why she was being all corny all of a sudden, but "you're my best friend too," I said, taking her hand and running back to the packhouse for dinner.
After dinner, I went to my room. I was tired. I heard rustling outside my room. I peeked out and saw Angelica walking around. I wanted to sneak up on her, so I followed her around. She was peeking into rooms, seemingly looking for something. I stifled a laugh. Was she lost? That didn't seem like her. She came across a door we always kept locked. I didn't even know what was in there.
She tried to open and couldn't. She began to get frustrated. "Ashton, what are you doing?" a little voice asked. I whipped around to see my little sister Sarah. I quickly covered her mouth. I'm trying to scare Angelica, I whispered, crouching down to her level. She smiled, "Can I play?" she asked. I sighed. "No, it's time for you to go to bed" I whispered.
"But I can't sleep, will you read me a story?" she asked ugh "Okay," I said, "let's go." I walked her to her bedroom and read her the three little pigs until she finally fell asleep. When I exited her room, I wondered if I should go find Angelica when a blood-curdling scream came from my mother's study.
"FIRE"
