Melissa and Liam were once the epitome of their wolf pack, an exemplary Alpha and Luna couple beloved by all. However, during an attack by rogue wolves, Melissa miscarried while protecting orphans, resulting in a loss of her fertility. Despite her efforts to conceive again, Liam comforted her by expressing his belief that they would eventually have a child. However, Melissa discovered that Liam and his Beta were secretly planning for Vicky to be a surrogate to ensure an heir for the pack. Even more shocking was the fact that Amber and Warren knew about this plan and deliberately kept it from her.

Chapter 1 - News
Melissa’s POV. “Luna, I won’t be giving you ovulation induction injections this month.” I turned to face Warren. No matter how many times I had prepared myself to hear those words, hearing them spoken out loud still hit differently. We were in my room when he told me. My regular check-up had just ended, and as always, Warren had personally examined me. Being my physician, and my oldest friend, he insisted on handling my care himself. I didn’t know what I was supposed to feel. Disappointment? Sadness? Or simply exhaustion? Maybe all of them at once. I released a long breath and leaned back against the headboard of my bed. “You know, it still feels strange hearing you call me Luna,” I said, staring up at the ceiling. He shrugged. “Well, you are the Luna.” I rolled my eyes. “Can’t you just call me Lisa? That’s what you used to call me.” He shook his head with a smile. “My best friend is the Luna of the pack now, so it’s only right that I address you properly as Luna.” I scowled. “Oh, stop it.” Silence enveloped between us. Then, the seriousness returned, and my gaze dropped to my lap. The discussion about the injections wasn’t something to take lightly. We had been trying for months. Months of whispered prayers and hope, only to face the same devastating disappointment over and over again when it didn’t work out. “Warren...” I bit the inside of my cheek before mustering the courage to ask the question that had been haunting me. “Do I still have a chance of conceiving naturally?” He didn’t answer right away. That terrified me because I knew Warren too well. When he answered immediately, the news was usually good. When he carefully chose his words, I automatically braced myself for something I wouldn’t want to hear. His eyes fell to the medical reports in his hands before returning to me. “Your ovaries were severely damaged.” I nodded. I knew that. How could I ever forget? The day I saved the children from the orphanage had nearly cost me my life. I survived, but some wounds from that day never truly healed. A familiar ache struck my chest as the memories resurfaced. The children and I had been on a sketching trip when a rogue wolf attacked. Without a second thought, I threw myself between the rogue and the children. I would do it again if I had to. But the injuries I sustained that day caused me to miscarry, stealing the child Liam and I had dreamed of meeting. And in protecting those children, my ovaries had been damaged as well. Warren’s voice pulled me back to the present. “I’ll be honest with you. I can’t give you a definite answer yet.” Even though I had been expecting it, I couldn’t stop my heart from sinking. “It’s hard to say since your ovaries were previously damaged. But…” he paused. “It’s not entirely impossible.” I blinked rapidly, my emotions tangling together. “What do you mean?” “I can’t promise that it will happen, but I also can’t tell you that it won’t,” he explained vaguely. “What I can tell you is don’t lose hope.” A smile found its way onto my lips. It wasn’t a guarantee, but that tiny possibility was enough for me to hold on to. “Thank you.” Warren stood. “And one more thing…” I looked up. “What?” He reached over and ruffled my hair, just like he used to when we were kids. “You shouldn’t measure your worth as Luna by whether or not these injections work.” I fell silent. Maybe because I knew he was right. But knowing something is true doesn’t make it any easier to accept. After giving me a few reminders and instructions, Warren left the room, leaving me alone with my thoughts. I wasn’t sure how long I sat there before a knock sounded at the door. I turned my head and saw Liam, my husband and the Alpha of our pack. He was leaning against the doorway, watching me with concern in his eyes. “How did it go?” I forced a smile. “It went fine,” I managed, avoiding his eyes. He walked over and sat beside me on the bed. “What did Warren say?” “He’s not giving me the injections.” I heard him exhale, but it wasn’t the sound of disappointment. If anything, it sounded like relief. He gently took my hand in his. “That’s good.” I glanced over at him with a slight frown. “Good?” “We’ve already talked about this. You know how harmful those injections have been on your body. We agreed that we wouldn’t continue, right?” I lowered my gaze. “I know, but having an heir is important to the pack, isn’t it?” For several seconds, he said nothing. Then, he gently lifted my chin, forcing me to meet his eyes. The conviction I found there almost stole my breath. “There is nothing more important than you, my wife.” “Liam—” He squeezed my hand. “Not the pack. Not my position as Alpha. Not a future heir. I will never trade your health for any of those things.” Before I could respond, he leaned forward and pressed a tender kiss to my forehead. Some of the weight on my chest eased. With Liam beside me, I never felt like I had to carry everything alone. That was how he had always been. Whenever I started drowning in my fears, he was the first one to pull me back to the surface. “By the way, could you prepare some snacks?” he requested. “Amber will be coming over later.” My eyes widened. Amber was my mentor, and the director of the orphanage. A smile instantly spread across my face, and I nodded. “Of course.” As I walked toward the kitchen, I couldn’t help revisiting old memories. I grew up in the orphanage, the place closest to my heart. That was where I first met Warren and Amber. And more importantly, it was where I first met Liam. I still remembered that day clearly. I was a teacher, busy taking care of the children, while he was already the Alpha conducting an inspection. At first, I thought he was incredibly intimidating. He always looked so serious. I even assumed he found me annoying because I wasn’t afraid of him. The thought made me smile as I arranged cookies neatly onto a serving tray. Who would have thought we’d end up here? Husband and wife. A family. And even though there was still one dream we hadn’t been able to fulfill, we were happy. The only thing I truly regretted was losing our chance to have another child after my miscarriage. Yet despite that, Liam had never once made me feel as though our life was incomplete. Maybe that was why I loved him even more. After preparing tea, cookies, and sandwiches, I carefully carried the tray and headed toward Liam’s office. When I arrived, I found him seated behind his desk, reviewing a stack of documents. Amber apparently hadn’t arrived yet. “I brought the snacks.” He looked up and smiled. “Perfect timing. Thank you.” I set the tray down. “Are you and Amber going to discuss the location for the new orphanage?” I asked curiously. He nodded. “Yes.” “In that case, should I attend the meeting?” He stayed quiet for a second before shaking his head. “No, that's not necessary.” He rose from his chair and walked toward me. Placing his hands on my shoulders, he gave me a concerned look. “You should get some proper rest.” I fluttered my lashes. “Are you sure?” “Yes,” he said reassuringly. Assuming he was simply worried about me, I nodded. “Alright.” For the last time, he pressed a kiss to my forehead. Then, I left the office, leaving Liam behind as he waited for Amber to arrive.
