Chapter 4 - Deception

1360 Words
Melissa’s POV. Without thinking, I shoved Liam’s office door open so hard that a thunderous bang reverberated throughout the room, rattling the glass windows and instantly silencing the voices inside. Everyone’s conversation came to an abrupt halt, and all pairs of eyes snapped toward me. My gaze swept across the room, taking in the scene before me. Liam sat in the center, while Hall and Vicky occupied the seats on his left. Amber and Warren sat on his right. The sight of them all gathered together felt like I was an outsider. I didn’t care if I had interrupted whatever discussion they were having. My chest felt like it was about to explode at any moment. My lips trembled as I stared at Liam, the man I loved more than myself, the man who had convinced me that I was the most important person in his life. Yet now, I couldn’t stop wondering whether he had thought of me even once while they planned all of this and decided to keep it a secret behind closed doors. The questions tormented me, but as badly as I wanted answers, I was terrified of them. Because if he had thought of me and still gone through with this betrayal, then it meant he had knowingly chosen to hurt me anyway. And if he hadn’t thought of me at all, that was somehow even worse. Did he hesitate? Did my name ever come up? Did my face cross his mind for even a second? Or was it that easy to set me aside? Amber and Warren rose from their seats when they saw the state I was in, looking like guilty people caught in the act. Warren’s face paled, while Amber’s eyes widened with alarm. “Melissa—” I didn’t let either of them speak. I strode straight toward Liam, my eyes blazing with fury. “Is this what you meant when you said nothing was more important than me? But you’re secretly having Vicky bear your child?” I accused, my voice shaking so badly I barely recognized it myself. Shock and guilt flashed across his face, but it disappeared instantly, as if he had intentionally locked his emotions away. “Melissa, I…” He sighed and rubbed his forehead, as if he were the one carrying the burden of this situation. “I didn’t plan for you to find out so soon.” It felt like a knife had been driven straight into my heart. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. With a single sentence, Liam had managed to make it hurt even more. That was his first concern? Not the pain suffocating me. Not the devastation written all over my face. Not I’m sorry. Not I never wanted to hurt you. Not even Let me explain. Just the timing? Just the fact that I had discovered it earlier than he intended? All I saw was a man trying to manage a situation. Not a man heartbroken over hurting the woman he loved. Liam wasn’t sorry for what he had done. He was sorry that I had found out before he was ready… A hysterical laugh escaped my lips. “You never intended for me to know!” I shouted, unable to keep my voice from rising. “You let someone who adores you become your surrogate without my knowledge!” I raised a finger and pointed at Vicky, who hurriedly stood up in panic. “Luna… I just wanted to provide an heir for the pack,” she explained fearfully. “I meant no harm.” “Shut up,” I snapped. “I wasn’t talking to you.” I rarely spoke that harshly, but I couldn’t bring myself to care anymore. I no longer had the strength to keep pretending to be the graceful and demure Luna, especially not at a moment like this. Especially not in front of the people who had shattered my trust. Vicky’s lips parted in shock, stunned by my outburst. She quickly lowered her head, looking embarrassed and wounded. From the corner of my eye, I noticed the sympathy some of them were giving her. That hurt even more. I was the one who had been betrayed. I was the one they had lied to. Yet somehow, I felt like I was the one causing a scene. I felt like the villain in their eyes. Warren stepped toward me. “Luna, listen first,” he said, trying to calm me down. “You need to consider the pack.” I closed my eyes. I already knew. I knew exactly where this conversation was headed. “The pack has no heir. Without one, we won’t have a future Alpha, and we’ll become weak,” he continued. “And if we become weak, other packs will swallow us whole…” I looked around the room, meeting each pair of eyes one by one. Not a single person here had told me the truth. Every one of them had known. It felt like I was truly seeing them for the first time. The people I trusted. The people I considered family. And now, I felt like I didn’t know them at all. They had lied to me behind all their comfort and advice, making decisions about my life without even bothering to ask for my opinion. Tears welled in my eyes. “Warren, you are my best friend. You know why I lost my child…” I said, my voice cracking into a whisper. He lowered his head and didn’t attempt to speak because he knew. In fact, all of them knew. No one could forget that day, least of all, me. I had saved a group of orphaned children from a rogue wolf attack and suffered severe injuries in the process. Because of that, I lost the baby I was carrying— the child Liam and I had dreamed of for so long. But the people I thought understood me were the very same people capable of lying to my face. And that was more terrifying than any enemy I had ever faced for the pack because the people I loved most were also the people capable of breaking my heart like this. A lump formed in my throat. “I miscarried for the pack’s children, but why did you also keep this from me?” “Lisa…” Warren opened his mouth, searching for the right words, but eventually closed it again without saying anything. Because there were no words powerful enough to erase his betrayal as my best friend. “Luna, Alpha decided to keep it from you to protect you,” Hall retorted. “An infertile Luna would be shunned by the pack. Your position would be at risk. Many pack members would begin to doubt you. Many enemies would take advantage of the situation. That’s why Vicky giving birth to an heir disguised as your child is the best solution. You should not blame Alpha.” I couldn’t help but laugh bitterly. “Should I blame myself, then?” I asked sarcastically. “Is that what you’re all trying to say? For miscarrying my child for the orphans? For not being able to give Alpha an heir? For not being able to bear a child for this pack?” My eyes flashed with anger. A mix of emotions wreaked havoc inside me, but the strongest were the pain and resentment I felt toward all of them. I had devoted myself to this pack. I had cared for their pups, comforted their grieving families, and treated every member of the pack as if they were my own family. I had bled for this pack. But now, it felt like all of that had been reduced to a single thing— my womb. It was as if they were telling me that my worth began and ended with my ability to bear children, that my sacrifices and my love for the pack and its members as their Luna were not enough. “Perhaps an infertile Luna should not stay in this pack and continue enduring the deceit from all of you!”
