In the misty coldness from the morning, Valerie woke up hazy due to the few hours of sleep she had.
Effortlessly, her wedding story was already all around along with the fact of how her father ended up at the hospital due to a heart attack caused by Allan infidelity.
The worst thing about it all was how the very same man kept trying to contact her, showing now a growing concern for his father-in-law, while staying at their house.
To be honest, Valerie almost met with him due to it.
But her stepmother prevented such a meeting for her luck, as the older woman thought they both needed some time before talking and making up.
Allan’s mother wanted to believe there was still some hope for the couple’s future and the well-being of their family.
So, she warned Valerie about how her son had told her he had gone home when he supposedly called her to ask how William was, words that gave her step-daughter expectancy as well until she remembered the disaster of her wedding day.
If it was true, why Allan had done something like that in the first place?
Valerie didn’t want to think about anything else. She only wanted to disappear from the world and become one with the mattress she was lying down on right now, which should have been her honeymoon suit for one night.
The couple would leave the following morning for a trip to Bora Bora, a place she yearned to visit since she first saw some pictures online.
Yet, ironically, she was still there…
For the third morning after the wedding ceremony that never happened.
Flowers were still scattered around the room floor since she rejected all the offers from the hotel staff to clean it.
The garbage cans were filled with the red bouquets that decorated the vases around the bedroom, and she got a perfect view of the red flowers when she opened her eyes again from where she was.
Valerie turned around a couple of times, but sleep was the last thing she had been able to do lately.
Her phone hadn’t been as good a distraction as it used to be, and the sound from the TV disturbed her even more due to all the happy couples she saw around in different shows or movies.
And in such a state, food was her only and sole console, making her wonder where was the full breakfast set she had ordered more than half an hour ago.
“WHAT DO YOU MEAN MY CARDS ARE BEING REJECTED?!”
Yet, it all would soon end after she heard such words from the hotel concierge.
It was more than confusing to her, and none of this made sense to Val as she had never in her life dealt with something like this before.
However, as Valerie opened her bank apps, she was astonished to see that the account was empty… ALL OF THEM!
Not a single penny was left in that, and checking where her money had been transferred to, the young woman wasn't sure if she should cry from frustration or anger upon seeing Allan’s name there.
And, a similar struggle was soon the cause of Valerie’s canceled cards since they were all from their shared accounts or her father's company, whereas as the CEO, Allan had the power to cancel them as he wished since Val rarely went there.
So, despite all the heartbroken feelings, the anger that raised in her chest, now motivated Valerie to go after him to have back what was hers before calling Allan by a couple of very impolite names.
The first spot she looked for him was at home. The young woman expected he would be too embarrassed to leave home at the moment after his misbehavior.
Nevertheless, once again, she was entirely clueless about the thoughts of the man who would be her husband… The very same man who went to work daily as if nothing had ever happened.
As if he hadn't cheated on his bride on their wedding day, or how he should be on their honeymoon right now, or even how he was the cause of his stepdad being in a hospital bed at the moment!
None of those seemed to cross his mind as he went to work as usual!
Upon arriving at Allan’s office floor, Valerie had a third surprise on that day, seeing the cause of her initial nemesis sitting before her peacefully while having her coffee.
“Where is Allan?! Call him out right away!” but pretending she didn't mind it all, she spoke out loud to the little foxy, demanding the presence of her groom.
“Miss Bennett! This is a workplace, you shouldn't scream like this!” as if she wasn't also doing the same, the other female corrected Valerie in her soft voice.
“Working place or not, where is Allan?! I need to speak with him now!” trying to make her way into his office, Val kept asking, but again, his assistant put herself between Valerie and the door.
“Mr. Simmons is not here right now, he left for an important meeting on the second floor about the expansion in Asia.” crystal-like eyes stared back at Bennett’s heir with a smirk on her lips for knowing things she didn't.
Everything about the other woman screamed that she felt like the smartest person in the room when she pushed Valerie away while going back to her small table.
“… I know it’s not my place to say those things, but… Miss Bennet, don't you think you should reevaluate your actions? I mean, I know you and Al-Mister Simmons are childhood sweethearts.” moving her long and slender fingers over the flat surface, Valerie wondered where she was going with such words when she sat down again. “But, I'm the one who he genuinely likes, and I feel the same about him. You were already born with everything, Miss Bennet. You should let him go to be truly happy.”
No signs of doubts or insecurity as she spoke those things, blinking her thick lashes as if she had won some kind of important prize, and Miss Bennet couldn't understand what Allan liked about her.
“What if I'm not the one who is not letting go of him? Maybe Allan is the one who still wants me instead of a side dish.”
Moving closer, Valerie didn’t allow herself to lose, as she answered back to that stupid request.
However, to her surprise, it just made Allan’s lover laugh.
Laughing as if what she was saying was the most insane thing in the world.
“We love each other, so it can't be true. Please, Miss Bennet. Don't disgrace yourself even more like this.” This time around, Val was the one chuckling due to words, covering her lips as she laughed meaninglessly, confusing Allan’s assistant even more as she stared at her like Valerie had become an insane woman.
“I’m sorry. It's just… it seems to me that you two have a deep connection." wasting no time, she quickly agreed with Val saying they truly did, so Valerie should step aside to let them be happy. “You shouldn't worry about me, I will gladly do it. But I wonder how long your love will last when you two lose your positions as this company is still my family’s.”
“And so, it was what you said, but there is nothing you can do about it as you only own 19% of the company, and have no legal power to request a new CEO, unless the other shareholders agree with you after you prove some issue with the actual one.” Rosetta, Valerie Bennett’s dear friend, easily completed what she had yet to tell her.
She had always been more involved in her father’s business than Val was with hers, so it wasn't a hard thing for Rose to figure out.
“I wonder how you will be able to do it. Uncle would do it in a minute if he wasn't…”
“I know! But I need to try, I can't let them stay there, enjoying this good life after humiliating me when I’m the only reason why he was able to achieve it!”
“Okay! Okay! Don't scream with me.” as Valerie quickly apologized, she didn't know what she would do if it was for Rosetta. She was the only friend she could count on right now when she was penniless, but she couldn't go home. “It's just that you're out of luck here. I hate to say it, but Allan is a good CEO, despite everything.”
Putting an end to Val’s insane plans before they even began, she calmed her friend down, and once again, Valerie found herself hopeless until her eyes went to the dark marble at Rose’s wall…
Dark marble deep as the darkness she saw in someone else's eyes.
“The shareholders! If I pick someone else more appropriate among them, they will not think twice about it, as another shareholder will always have their best interest in mind!” thinking about the Asian man, who never left her thoughts since her failed wedding day, Valerie happily said back to Rosetta.
