A man could be seen lifting weights in a gym with sweat dripping off his skin. The manner in which he lifted the weight and the muscular build of his body made it obvious that he was a frequent visitor to the gym.
His phone, which was on a stool beside him, soon starts ringing and he carefully eases the weight back in place then sits up to answer the call.
"Hello", he salutes pleasantly with a smile.
"If it isn't my baby brother who hardly remembers he has me...", the caller begins and he chuckles.
"Come on Cathy, it isn't like that and you know", he defends.
"Do I know? I'm not sure I do", she replies and they laugh. "How are you Devon?"
"I'm fine. How is my little Quinny?"
"She's fine", Cathy replies. "Want to come over to the house today? Mitchelle and I are going there once the kids are back from school, our husbands can come later."
"Wow, it would be nice to meet up with Mitchelle. She never calls me"
"And what about you? Can't you call your eldest sister?", Cathy scolds.
"You know I'm busy Cathy, and if I was to call any of my sisters, it would definitely be Melissa and not you two married women. Do you want me to call when you and Jason are in the middle of making me a nephew?", Devon replies and Cathy laughs.
"Still as perverse minded as ever, aren't you?"
"I'm not perverse minded, Big sis", he complains.
"Says the boy who probably slept with half of the girls in Everly high school when he was a student", Cathy mocks.
"It's not my fault that they seemed alluring as at then."
"An allure that usually expired once you had slept with them"
"That's true though", Devon chuckles.
"You're still on your player ways, aren't you?", she asks.
"What makes you think so?"
"The fact that you have never mentioned a girlfriend all these years", Cathy answers just as quickly and he chuckles. "Why are you laughing? Am I lying?"
"Well...", he trails off.
"Cat's got your tongue?"
"Why are you suddenly being harsh on me today?"
"Who is being harsh on you? Certainly not me", Cathy laughs. "I was just reminding you that you've never told me, Mitchelle or Melissa that you have a girlfriend which is very worrying."
"Why would you be worried?", he laughs.
"You don't think it's worrisome to have a twenty-six-year-old sibling who seems to have never dated?"
"At least you know I'm attracted to females, so I'm definitely not gay", he jokes.
"It's not funny, Devon."
"Wait a minute Catherine, did you actually call me to harangue me about not having...", he begins to ask but stops halfway with a sigh.
"A girl you're serious about?"
"Yes, exactly that."
"I didn't call you because of that, but it has been on my mind for a while, for years actually, but I always told myself that you were still young."
"So what am I now? Old? Please sis, I'm still very young"
"Keep on deceiving yourself", Cathy jeers and they laugh. "I really want to see you today, make sure you come to the house."
"As long as you won't try starting this line of conversation when we're at home, I'm prepared to clear things off my schedule to be with you guys"
"Awnnn, you're so sweet"
"I know I am", he prides and she laughs.
"So we'll be seeing each other later in the afternoon?"
"Yes", he replies. "Talk later, Cathy", he concludes and cuts the call once she responds then drops the phone in a manner that showed slight annoyance.
"Someone doesn't look so happy", he hears from behind him and his face immediately lights up in a smile, recognizing the voice even before turning to look at the beautiful lady who had just spoken.
"Hey baby"
"Why do you seem annoyed? Did you receive bad news over the call?"
"No Shirley, I'm fine", he murmurs just as she gets to his front and bends to kiss him briefly.
She is about to take her lips off his when he claims her lips again and deepens the kiss. He is already in the process of dragging her to himself when she breaks off the kiss with a chuckle.
"You're sweaty, Devon"
"We can always take a shower afterwards", he suggests with a wink and she laughs.
"There's no way I would fall for that after dating you for so long", she replies and they chuckle. "You don't want to talk to me about what's bothering you, do you?"
"I'm sorry baby", he sighs and she huffs.
"Fine. I came here to get you so that we could go out."
"And how did you know I am here? This is not my usual routine."
"Shane told me where you were", Shirley replies and he chuckles.
"This is why a man should never let his lady get too close to his personal assistant."
"So you don't want me to know where you are?", she pouts.
"I will kiss the breath out of you if you pout one more time baby", he tells her and she glares at him. "If you add that look, I might even bang you right now and right here"
"Shut up horndog", she snarls.
"Only for you baby", he replies and she smiles brightly.
"Go and shower already, I don't want to wait too long."
"Okay baby", he concedes and stands up. "Should I get you something before I leave?"
"No, just go ahead", she answers and he kisses her cheek before slipping away.
She immediately picks up his phone once he walks away and her fingerprint, which was already saved on the phone, opens the phone. She quickly moves to check his call log only to see that the call which he had just received was from his sister and sighs already knowing the reason for his dampened mood.
She was glad that he had managed to keep their relationship secret like she wanted for the years they had been together, even though it distressed him.
Initially, it had been a joint decision but as they grew older, Devon began falling out of love with the idea as he was accustomed to telling his sisters everything, even Melissa who was just beginning high school.
"If only...", she starts to wish but stops. "No if-onlys Shirley, focus on the present. You may not have anyone but you have a good life. You have had an amazing boyfriend for almost eight years, you have a job, a car and many other things. The government is not even keeping close tabs on you anymore. It's better than what most ex-mutants have", she mumbles in an attempt to pacify herself and exhales.
It wasn't her fault that she became a mutant, the fancy term which the government had for wild magicians, it was just that her powers had manifested earlier than it usually did in most magicians and very strongly. That was why she had killed a lot of people when she was younger, and had been used by older mutants as a mercenary.
Luckily, Paul Hawkins had understood that she was just a teenager who couldn't control her powers, not a magician who decided to use her powers against humans and convinced the government to help her. She had also been made a student of Everly high school so that she could learn how to control herself.
"That's all in the past, Shirley", she tells herself.
'Then why can't you and Devon tell his family about your relationship?', her mind taunts and she slips the phone back on the stool annoyedly.
