Chapter Three

1262 Words
Melissa sighs as she gets out of her father's car in front of the gates of Everly high school, the school she was going to be attending for the next four years, or more, depending on the intensity of her powers. Everly high school was a magic training school but it was also equipped as a high school so that it's students could learn how to control their powers, which usually manifested at high school age while schooling. It was created as a result of scuffles between human high schoolers and magicians attending high school. It also had a middle school for the few magicians whose powers manifested earlier than usual, but it was the high school that had the most recognition. Some magicians managed to attend normal high schools but once they were discovered by the government, they were sent to Everly high school whether they liked it or not, since there was nothing the humans liked more than the idea of controlling the supernaturals. "Your identity card please?", the security guard asks and she quickly puts down her backpack to bring out her ID card. "New student?" "Yes, sir", Melissa replies. "No wonder", he exhales. "The students of this institution have to identify themselves here before coming in every day, unless they have a different way of getting in of course." "Like an airplane?" "No, like a dragon or a bird, something of that sort. Those are the only things the air barrier lets in and even then, they still have to identify themselves on landing." "Why?" "I'm still waiting for your identity card", he reminds her and she immediately stands up then hands it over. "Sorry", she apologizes. "The security is tight so as to prevent the entry of those nosy humans, or even mutants" "What's wrong with mutants coming in?" "Many things...", he trails off as he peers into the identity card in his hands. "Melissa Hawkins", he completes then frowns. "Are you related to Paul Hawkins?" "Yes", she slowly admits. "A grandchild", he mutters. "So one of those girls got knocked up before marriage... There's nothing this generation of magicians born and raised on Earth won't do, so disgraceful, no wonder we never heard." "Actually, I'm his daughter", she rectifies and the man's eyes widen. "Mr Hawkins has a daughter that is this young? This is very surprising, especially as I remember when his other children were here, two girls and a boy have passed through here if I'm not mistaken," "You are not mistaken", she cuts in "But it has been so long ago since they finished from this school", he wonders. "They are very much older than me actually. I've heard my oldest sister was already in college when I was born", she chirps and the security guard bursts into laughter. "That must have been so discomforting", he chuckles. "Are you going to attend to that girl or continue talking to her?", a woman's voice booms from behind him and his countenance immediately turns serious. "Welcome to Everly high school", he mutters as he hands her ID card back to her and lets her into the school compound. "Have a nice day sir", she beams as she walks in and he shuts the entry behind her. "Always talking to the students", the woman complains as she walks towards him. "You're lucky you are an old staff member, you would have been fired." "That was a Hawkins-spawn I was talking to just now." "Hawkins-spawn? A grandchild?" "No, his daughter." "Are you sure? Or are you talking about a different Hawkins?" "It's Paul Hawkins of course, do you know any other Hawkins?", he retorts. "She's a new student." "Wow, I'm surprised." "Now you understand why we were talking, I was just as surprised too." "Well... Her siblings were very interesting students, except the second daughter though, she didn't have any major magical abilities." "Let's hope she will be interesting too", he chuckles and collects an ID card from another student. Meanwhile, behind the massive gates, Melissa is walking down the pavement while looking at her map. She is totally occupied with trying to figure out which direction she is to take until she finds herself falling on the floor. "What the...", she exclaims halfway before looking up only to find herself looking into the most beautiful pair of blue eyes she had ever seen. "They are so blue... Just like an ocean...", she murmurs breathlessly. 'And you are definitely drowning in them right now i***t', she scolds herself and immediately stands to her feet just as the blue eyes fill with disdain before turning away. It is when the blue eyes turn away from her that she realizes that the owner of those blue eyes was a male, he was sitting on a white dragon which was presently flying away from her. "How is it that you didn't notice that massive dragon but you noticed the rider's eyes? Are you okay, Melissa?", she berates herself aloud. "Are you okay?", a female voice suddenly asks and her eyes immediately dart up. "Yeah, I'm fine, perfectly alright", she blurts. 'I don't think so, Melissa', her mind argues but she quickly shuts down the thought. "I noticed you have been looking at your map for quite a while, are you a new student?" "Yes", Melissa replies. "I'm Denise" "Melissa" "Sorry about Senior Damon, that's how he always acts. I saw how he used his magic to push you away from his path, even though he ended up not landing there like he seemed he was going to" "Oh... That was him using magic? No wonder it was so sudden." "So you didn't even know how you fell down", Denise laughs. "I actually didn't", Melissa chuckles. "So that's his name? Damon?", she asks after laughing and Denise's eyes widen. "Shh... You have to add 'Senior' else you'll be punished." "By him?" "No, by the school authorities", Denise replies and Melissa's brows narrow. "Such a silly rule" "I also thought so three years ago." "You're in your final year?", Melissa asks. "No, I'm just entering high school but I've been here for years", Denise explains. "Are your parents that pleased by the idea of a school just for magicians or are you under the government's care?" "Government care", Denise mumbles dryly. "Wow, so are your parents not here on Earth or are you one of the magicians whose powers manifested earlier?", Melissa asks and Denise frowns. "My powers manifested early", she answers. "So I'm going to be acquainted with a powerful magician, that's so exciting", Melissa utters excitedly and Denise laughs humorlessly. "I doubt you will be so excited about that when you realize what it means." "What do you mean?", Melissa asks and Denise sighs. "I should get going", she tells Melissa and turns around. "Don't!", Melissa shouts and Denise slowly turns around. "I really should, you will regret it if you make me your friend here." "I don't care", Melissa replies. "You will care when you realize what befriending me means. It was nice meeting you Melissa", Denise responds and turns around but Melissa holds her hand before she could walk away. "Please don't go, just guide me in and let's be friends, or something... I don't really get along with people so... Now that you've approached me first I can't let you go, can I?" "Yes, you can." "Well, I don't want to", Melissa beams. "I hope you don't regret this soon", Denise warns. "I will never", Melissa promises with a smile and Denise slowly smiles back. "Let's go"
