Detective Danica Evans has spent her career working her way to being the top detective in her precinct. She has always prided herself on the ability to tell when someone is lying to her face. It's a skill she developed from a young age. Her childhood was not always good, so she learned at a very young age that you can't trust anyone to take care of you.
You can only rely on yourself, and you will be golden.. I wake up at 4 a.m., head to the gym, shower, and head to work.
It's 6 am. When I get to the office, there are only two others that come at the same time every day. Heather Peirce is a great cop and also my only female friend. She comes in ginning like the cat that got the cream. "Looking alive, I see!" I smirk at her. "How was your weekend?" she sits across from my desk, rolling her eyes, cöcks her head at me, and says, "You would know if you would have shown up! I waited for you, but you were a no-show again!" I rolled my eyes at her. "Yeah... yeah, I know, but I had a hot date.. With my bed, chinese takeout, and some Netflix binging all weekend! How was the wedding? Your sister didn't run, did she ?" I asked, laughing. "No, she didn't run! You should have seen her in her dress, though she was so beautiful. Dani. She looked like an angel. " A knock at the door ends our chat. I looked up to see Cap standing there. "Morning ladies." "Morning, sir!" we both replied at once. He smiled, shaking his head." Is there something you need, sir?" I asked. "Meeting in 20 mins. We have a missing person's case, a wealthy family's only daughter. Destiny Waters hasn't made contact or been seen in 48 hrs. Her last known sighting was July 20th at around 10 p.m., leaving her office. Her mother and roommate called it in, " OK sir, we will be right there!" he replies, thanks, and walks away.
I looked at Heather, and I had to laugh at the look on her face. She always turns stupid around Cap. She knows she can't have him. He is our boss, but it's always fun to tease her. We chatted a bit more, and 20 minutes later, we were sitting in the conference room listening to the briefing on the missing person's case.
Hearing the details, I scan the board and take down some notes for later reference. I was drawn back to the room by Captain Campbell, saying my name. "Yes, sir?" He told me he wanted me on this case and that I needed to choose 3 others to join me as a team. "OK, that's easy enough, sir. I want Peirce, Johnson, and Gregory!"..."OK, everyone, any questions?" Cap said pretty loudly. No one says anything, so Cap dismisses the meeting with a "Get to work!" My team stayed behind so we can get started. The first thing I asked was what everyone was thinking about this so far.
Charles Gregory was one of the first officers to respond to the report. He told us how the mother was distressed when they spoke to her. She stated she talked to her daughter daily, and they spoke the morning that she was last seen. She resides in Bagley and shares an apartment with a friend who reported to the mother that she did not come home the night of the 20th of July.
Her roommate, Natalie Johanson, was there, and she stated she missed a call from her at 10:03 PM. she tried to call back at 10:15 p.m. after her shower, but her call went straight to voicemail. She left a message and waited. The next day, she called the mother, and they made the report, as you can see, in the rest of my report. "Thank you, Charles."
We spent the next 30 minutes making a plan of action, deciding to split up and tackle this from multiple angles, and meet for lunch at 2 pm. I headed to my office to get my things, telling Gregory I'd be right there grabbing my keys, phone, and notebook. I headed out, letting reception know I'd be on the field. Today, I met Gregory outside. "Ready?" I asked, shaking his head, yes.
We went to my cruiser and set off. The first stop on the list is the roommate. We make small talk till we reach our destination. We arrived at the apartment. I log the time, at 8:30 am. we get out, making our way up and ringing the bell to her apartment, notifying her of who we are, we are buzzed in.
We made our way to number 203, knocking on the door. She answers the door, looking rough. I note to myself. She invited us inside. We took a seat in the living room and began with our questions. She told us exactly what she said in her statement. I asked her if she knew of anyone who would want to hurt her or any enemy's or ex-boyfriend who might be angry? She is adamant that there is no one she can think of and that she doesn't date.
She works and sleeps and doesn't really go out, she only had one boyfriend when in high school, but they had broken up years ago before she went to college, but they are friends now, and that she was currently dating her ex-boyfriend, Jarod Knight. Now, that raises questions from both Gregory and I. "May I ask how Destiny felt about you dating her ex?" Her reply was that "She was the one who encouraged us to date."
"She always told me she only dated in high school to gain experience and that, as far as she knew, her and Jarod were in agreement about dating until graduation." Hmm... interesting.. I left my card with her. If she remembers anything or if something that comes up, she can call me. She agreed and saw us out. I look at Charles Gregory and ask what he thinks his thoughts match mine. "We need to talk to the mother and then the ex. "..
45 mins later, we are sitting in the home of Kevin and Katherine Waters, the victims' parents. They are both very upset. We are talking about possible enemies of the family or any of her friends or ex-boyfriends.
They answer much the same as the roommate did, but when we talk about the ex, the parents don't seem to be happy to hear the name Jarod knight Kevin's face turns angry, and he raises his voice "If that motherfûcker touched my daughter".
Katherine stands hugging her husband to calm him down.
It seems to work some. She softly tells him to stay calm. "We can't think if we are angry!" His expression softens, and he says "Your right. I apologize. I just get angry when I think about Jarod Knight touching my daughter!" "WHAT!!! Where is she? Did you find her?" I turned to see two men. "Calm down, boys." Katherine said, "Come sit please".
They looked angry about hearing their father speak. Katherine introduced them to us, Jason and Jeremy Waters twins. "Hello, nice to meet you," I said. "So where were we, Jarod Knight? Can you tell us what you know about his relationship with Destiny?" Jason answers, "He took advantage of her in high school. They dated from the end of 10th grade until two months into the summer after graduation, and she ended it to get ready for college.
"He used the fact that she never dated anyone, never even kissed before him. He is obsessed with her. " Hmmm.. Very insightful, I asked if there was anything else they could think of? places she might go to? They all answered no. I leave my card with them to call me for anything they need. After we finish with the family, we need to head to lunch to meet with the rest of the team as planned.
We arrived at the restaurant we had agreed on. It was 2 pm. Heather and Samuel are already there waiting. We greet and take our seats. The waitress comes and takes our drink orders, and of course, Samuel is flirting, making the waitress blush. I rolled my eyes at him, such a player.... "So here's what we found." I went into all the details and listened to Heather and Samuel relay their findings as well.
She was last seen leaving work and walking her usual route home. With camera footage from surrounding buildings, she was seen turning the corner and disappeared... after putting all the information together, we all agreed that the next course of action was finding the ex Jarod knight and questioning him....
