13 The Island of Mauritius Mauritius rises out of the Indian Ocean like a peacock fanning its tail. The change in the palette is welcome after the dull blues and grays of the sea for so many days since leaving Perth behind us on the other side of the ocean. As we approach the island, the stark mountains behind the port come into view, jagged and irregular, sheltering the harbor beneath them. The closer we draw, the more varied are the different greens of the island, from the turquoise of the shallower waters to the deep olive of the vegetation on the mountain slopes. The palette explodes into a further kaleidoscope of color as we drive through the city on the way to the airport. Oranges, reds, yellows, purples and a clear, bright blue.
