"Why would you let him talk to you like that? Who does he think he is? Just because he is the last descendant of the dragon race doesn't mean he has the right to question us on our own grounds" Catherine bellowed angrily. Wrath could be easily seen all over her face as all the tenderness and gentleness that she had always shown seemed to have disappeared without a trace.
"Calm down love. What we need to do now is to find a way to break the mate bond between him and Zoe. We can't let her marry him".
"What's so great about that brat anyway? She's nothing but her relative" Catherine said scornfully "We both know that she is still in his heart. Haa, I'd like to see how that brat would warm up to him"
"KEEP YOUR VOICE DOWN CATHERINE. The walls have ears. Besides she is the one who we promised to raise. I don't think I need to remind you of the deal" Roid warned.
"I do remember. But don't expect me to love her as my own"
"You don't need to. Just keep up with the good mother act while I do the rest"
"Fine. But I do expect something in return"
"And what's that love?" Roid said as he already had an inkling of ehat Catherine wanted and just silently watched her.
"I want you" She said bashfully and he smiled.
"And me you shall have" Roid said as he carried her back to their room bridal style. It didn't take long for their raspy breaths and moans plus the creaking of the bed to sound on the ever quiet hall.
The West Wing Quarters (Zoe's Room):
"Do you have a feud with my dad?" I asked Xander when we got to my room.
"Not really a feud. Just a few misunderstandings"
"But it looked and sounded serious. Moreover, who were you guys talking about in the first place?" I was actually feeling insecure. Why would they say 'she' or rather in this case 'I' had appeared the second time.
"So many gears at work in that tiny little brain of yours, aren't they? I will answer all your questions okay. Just give me a little time"
"Which means you don't trust me enough to tell me" I was already sad. Sure, I understood how weird it was to trust someone you just met that day but still !! I was his mate for crying out loud.
"It's not about trust Zoe. It's a matter that even I am yet to understand. So I will give you all the answers when am sure of them, okay. In the meantime, why don't you prepare for our wedding ceremony. You are going to be the most beautiful bride of the century" He said as he placed his palm on my cheek. His warmth spread through my body as I blushed. He laughed a bit while looking at me.
"Now sleep okay. I have some matters to tend to"
"I thought you would sleep with me " Wait a minute, why did that sound weird in my ear. "I didn't mean sleep sleep. I meant to have.... No, not that, I meant.... Oh good Lord". Now I was truly embarrassed.
"I understand what you are trying to say Zoe" he said as he chuckled, "But these matters won't attend to themselves. But I promise, I am going to be the first thing you see once you open yours eyes tomorrow morning"
"You promise?" I asked with uncertainty.
"I promise" he said and pecked my forhead and cheeks before he turned to leave. With a goofy smile on my face, I fell asleep peacefully without the disturbance of my dreaded visions.
Xander's POV:
I felt strange whenever I was with her. They weren't the same person. She was already dead a long time ago. But why was I able to sense her presence in Zoe. What is happening?
"Mathias"
"Yes sire" one of the guards approached.
"Once we are back home, summon Irene". The guard looked at me with astonishment.
"But sire...."
"I know. But at this point, only she can know and have the answers I am looking for"
"As you wish sire"
"Summon Xavier as well. Only God knows where that little headache ran off to. Tell him to meet me at the the study in the west wing"
"But that's Princess Zoe's personal library"
"I know. She won't mind" Just look at me, a mere mention of her name was enough to make me smile.
"Is there anything else, sire?"
"Nothing else. You may go now"
"Yes sire" the guard said and left while I headed to the library.
