School wasn't for me.
It wasn't because I lacked intelligence, because I was an 'A' honor roll student with a 4.0 GPA.
It was because of all the people. I wasn't much of a people's person. I could handle crowds, but preferred not to, if that makes any sense.
Now that I am older I have plenty of 'friends' to associate with, but I would much rather be anti-social and keep to myself. Maybe because I didn't trust people. The only reason I had friends was because I was soon-to-be alpha, and everyone wanted to get in good with the next leader.
I wasn't stupid.
But on the occasion, I did make two real friends. One happens to be my appointed beta, Mason Easton.
He was a true southern gentle man, with the thick southern accent that made the girls bat their eyes and bite their lip, and not to mention his honesty as well as loyalty.
I could count on Mason to tell me the honest to moon Goddess truth, and to always have my back.
How we met is another story.
"You know it is incredibly rude to stare?"
I gave Mason a playful glare, as I patted the seat next to me. He plopped down with a 'thud'.
"Very graceful Mase. Now what brings you to advanced chemistry?"
"You is what brings me, your mother told me you've been avoid your duties. Plus you aren't doing anything in here besides staring at each other."
*Sigh*
"Is that what she told you now? "
Mason gave me one of his famous half smiles while slinging an arm around my shoulders.
"Look Ari, just let me help with the party arrangements so your mother will get off your back. I know it's not something you want to do, but it will be easier with my help."
I bit at the flaky dead skin on my lip, as I heard Mason's plea.
With my hand pressed to my face, I sighed once more in defeat.
"Alright, Mase you win. How would you like to do this?"
"First answer these questions. For the flavor of your cake you want Red Velvet right? Your mother told me that you told her to order your favorite, only she doesn't know what your favorite is."
My jaw dropped with astonishment . She even didn't know my favorite type of cake, but yet she likes to call herself my mom. I shook my head.
"Of course you know I want Red Velvet cake Mase..."
Before I could finish Mason add, "With cream cheese topping and filling I assume."
I giggled.
"You know me so well."
He laughed "That's what your beta is for. Now since you aren't busy, wanna grab lunch with me in town?"
I raised a curious eye brow.
"If I didn't know any better, I'd say that you were asking me out on a date Mr. Easton."
"Is that what it looks like now? Date or not Ari, are you coming with me or not?"
"Of course I'm coming. When a fine gentleman ask I always say yes."
Not a second to spare, Mason stood, grabbed my hand and escorted me out of class.
Mason still had my hand in his, as we made our way down the stairs to the 1st floor and up to my locker.
"Look your mother mentioned something else to me, and it's been racking my brain."
I averted my eyes from my locker and locked them onto Mason.
"What was it about?"
Mason looked me in the eyes, before saying, "She mentions a woman named Margret Spencer."
"What does my grandmother have to do with anything."
"After she mention your grandmother, she had me shred some files but not before I took pictures of the documents."
"Mason cut to the chase."
"Look in those files was the name Julien Valintine."
I didn't move at the mention of Julien's name.
"You mean the King of Vampires, Julien?"
Mason gave a curt nod.
"What did the rest of the document say?"
"I didn't get a chance to read it all. But here take this SIM card. I saved the document on here for you to see."
I gripped the small chip device in my hand. Why does my mother have information on Julien. Her of all people despises vampire, and Julien being top of her list.
"Thanks Mase."
I tucked the chip away, in my bag. I clutched the bag close to me as Mason and I exited the school.
I rode passenger, while Mason drove into town. To say I was nervous to see what was on the SIM card was an understatement.
"Look Ari, we will get to the bottom of this. Just stop looking depressed. I need my quirky friend."
I gave Mason a slight glance.
"Just hurry up. I'm starving."
Mason gave a small chuckle, as he pushed down on the accelerator.
