Chapter 25: Talfryn His training took over and Talfryn assessed the situation—Arvi was fine, Akton had a light burn. Lochlann looked worn out but not in need of anything. Wren was absent. Talfryn turned toward Whitney. She was long beyond his assistance. He took several steps over to her and looked down at her, numbness beginning to creep in. She was very dead; the dragon had bitten her nearly in half. Her eyes glittered still, like a dragon’s, but she’d probably died within moments. This should have been some sort of consolation, and yet Talfryn didn’t feel it. Around the numbness he could feel guilt stalking, waiting for him to let it in. Whitney hadn’t had to die.
