We move quickly through the castle, keeping our heads down. We escape through the gates, telling the guards the same lie as the last one. We work for the kitchens and needed to get more supplies for the supper. If the guards showed any type of hesitation at all, we quickly reminded them how important it was that the dinner is perfection after Emilienne’s death. The road to the castle seems longer than it did before. Each step seems to take longer than the last. The cold seeps in through my clothing, even though we’re halfway through spring.
