Trey's POV
I went home after helping Tia with the gift wrapping. As usual the house was silent, I hoped somehow my parents went back to Boston already. I know that is not possible. They will be here till new years and I have to somehow be patient with that fact. I dont know how they are going to react after what I told them. I am sure Granny will understand if not for them. I quickly went up to my room to see that Grandma was there in my couch waiting for me.
"Hey Grandma" I said without much excitement.
"Where did you go boy?" She asked worried.
"Dont worry, I was in the church. Had some work there so I stayed there. Ate in the soup kitchen and then when everybody left, I came back"
"Why didnt you tell me about Micheal?" She asked with a sadness
"I couldnt, I just never had the courage."
"I never thought you would be facing such thing. You didnt need to be brave to talk to your Grandma. I will always be by your side honey." She hugged me
"Thank you Grandma. So that means He is never coming back?"
"Yup. I would never let anyone near you. Even if it means I have to raise you alone."
"What do you mean Grandma? Dad doesnt believe in me? He thinks I am lying?" I was beyond shocked to hear that. They would believe him over me?
"I believe in you Trey. Thats what matters most. Others can mind their own business."
"I cant believe they trust him more than me." I cried in my Grandma's lap.
"Trust takes Time Trey. The one thing they never gave you since you were born."
We both sat there quietly for some time.
"Want to try some new dish? I made it for you. Its mexican, its called a cheeto or something. I cant remember."
I smiled at her and then we both went to the kitchen.
"Its a chorizo Grandma" I told her looking at what she made.
"Oh, yes. Now I remember. How does it taste?"
"Its yummy Grandma. I bet Tia will like it. Its sweet." I told her and we heard some sound outside the kitchen. It was Dad and Mom. Dad cleared his throat and said
"Trey, You are not to see her again."
"You dont get to tell me who I can see and who I cant" I said without trying to suppress my anger.
"Look at you. I can barely recognise you. Talking back, storming out, sneaking back in. How much has she taught you to be disrespectful?"
"You dont recognise me because you are hardly here. Dont blame Tia for your incompetence of being my parents."
"Watch your tone boy. Its our family business and you are about to take over once you grow up. We are working hard for providing you a good future."
"By destroying my present? I dont want such future if you are working so hard for it. You both want to have a successful career and you think I am only a barrier in your life. You just had a kid and threw him like you didnt want him in the first place."
"We love you honey but our job is also a priority to us" mom spoke.
"Oh you have a voice. I thought you only spoke in courts. This isnt one so you can go back to being quiet and watch the show." I looked down on her.
My whole family was shocked to hear me talk back.
"Trey, you will not talk to your mother like this" Grandma yelled
"No, I wouldnt talk to you like this but her, she is a mother only in my birth certificate and she can just continue being there." I said back to Grandma.
"Trey, this is how you speak to your parents?" Grandpa asked
"No, Grandpa. This is how I speak to the people who neglected me their whole life and suddenly start to order me around about who I can see and who I cant"
"So thats what this is all about? A girl? Seriously?" My dad gave me questioning looks
"See, you still dont get it. You just want a scapegoat. You want to pretend you didnt do anything wrong and she is the one to be blamed" I was furious now
"If you dont stop being friends with her, I will transfer you to another school in Boston." Dad was red with anger now
"Theodore Allister Brent. You will do no such thing." Grandma yelled at dad "You have never taken the time to know your kid. You choose to believe some stranger over him and now you want to take him away from the only home he has ever known. I wont let you take him away from me. As long as I am alive I will take care of him and you young man have no say in this."
"But mom" dad tried to say something
"I dont want to hear it. Tia is the only friend he ever bought home. Being her friend Trey has changed in ways I never thought he would. He is excelling in his studies too. He is playing chess, joined art class, helped in church. She is just being a good friend to him and she is the one who saved him from your a**hole employee, you sent to watch over him. She didnt tell me anything and still managed to keep him safe. The things you were supposed to do as his parents." She was breathing harder as she was fuming with anger and talking loudly. I went near her and made her sit down so she can relax herself.
"Thanks Trey. You see, this is the young man I raised. He is caring and respectful."
She said and drank water.
"You want to know where I went today? I went to church. I helped some homeless people. There were kids too but they werent sad because they were homeless. They were happy to be with their parents. It didnt matter to them they had gifts or not. They were just happy to be able to have a meal during christmas. Do you know why they were happy?"
I saw dad and mom, they were both speechless
"Thats because they know that they have their parents who will somehow provide for them. They were poor but they knew their parents are with them to protect them. Tia doesnt have a dad but still she is happy because her mom acts both Mom and Dad for her. I have everything gifts, food, home, car, personal driver, still I am not happy when you are here. I just wait for christmas to be over. I am not excited about the presents you got me. I just wait for you to go back and then I can finally be happy with Grandma and Grandpa. I just hate Christmas. I just hate you. Both of you. For abondoning me, for sending Micheal in my life, for just showing up during holidays. I hate you. I hate to be standing near you. I hate your very existence."
I say and I go to my room and slam the door.
