Episode 1: The New Semester
Lila Thompson hated mornings, especially Mondays. Between the relentless alarm, the chaos of getting ready, and the gnawing anxiety of another school day, she often wished she could just disappear. But today was worse—today marked the first day of her junior year, and she knew the halls would be buzzing with gossip, old rivalries, and, worst of all… the popular crowd.
She tried to keep her head down as she navigated the crowded hallways, clutching her books like armor. Passing groups of laughing girls and strutting boys felt like crossing a minefield. Her best friend, Emma, had already texted her frantic advice: “Stay low. Don’t trip. Don’t talk to the wrong people. And for the love of all things holy… avoid Jason Carter.”
Jason Carter. Lila hated that name and couldn’t stop thinking about it at the same time. The star quarterback, the boy every girl whispered about, the guy everyone expected to have the “perfect life.” And somehow, fate decided he would cross her path on day one.
It happened in the hallway, right outside the chemistry lab. Lila was balancing her books, a backpack slipping off one shoulder, and—bang!—she collided with someone. Her papers tumbled, notebooks flying like leaves in a storm.
“I’m so sorry!” she stammered, kneeling to pick up the mess.
“Watch where you’re going,” came the smooth, slightly amused voice. Lila froze. Looking up, she saw him—Jason Carter, standing there with a raised eyebrow and that signature smirk that made girls swoon across the school.
Lila’s cheeks burned. She muttered another apology, scrambling to gather her books. He bent down, helping her with one notebook, and for a moment their hands brushed. She felt a jolt—a flutter she’d never admit to anyone.
“Lab partners,” he said suddenly, holding out a hand to shake hers. “Looks like we’re in chemistry together.”
Her heart sank and raced at the same time. Chemistry? Seriously? She tried to mask her panic with a nervous laugh.
The first class went by in a blur. Lila couldn’t focus—not because the lesson was hard, but because Jason was sitting across from her, smirking at her doodles in the margin of her notebook, commenting quietly under his breath about her formulas. She wanted to be annoyed, but every time he smiled, it distracted her completely.
At lunch, Emma cornered her. “He’s literally sitting at your table.”
“I… I don’t know what to do,” Lila admitted, feeling a mix of dread and excitement.
“Do what you always do,” Emma said. “Just… don’t fall for him. Seriously. He’s trouble.”
But Lila couldn’t help it. That afternoon, as she left the cafeteria, she noticed Jason following her at a distance, pretending to talk to his friends but stealing glances at her every few steps. Her stomach flipped. Something told her that junior year was going to be nothing like she expected.
By the end of the day, Lila realized something terrifying: high school isn’t just about surviving classes anymore. It’s about surviving Jason Carter noticing her—and maybe, just maybe, surviving the feelings she didn’t think she’d ever have.
And as she closed her locker that afternoon, she whispered to herself, almost in disbelief:
“Why does he have to be so… perfect?”
