CHAPTER NINETEEN With her left arm wrapped around Eva, Ashley slid the woman’s key into the lock of the double-wide trailer’s door and then turned the knob. Eva leaned against her as they crossed the threshold into the home the young woman had shared with her sister, Violet. The air inside smelled of pumpkin spice. Ashley led Eva into the living room, navigating around a coffee table topped by a miniature scarecrow flanked on both sides by orange pillar candles—the source of the sweet scent. “Do you want to sit here?” she asked.
