The Beta and her Alpha

Chapter 2 - A challenge??

Zane POV

“I just miss you, I can’t stop thinking about two nights ago.”

She don’t even let me say anything before she got up and walked out with her things as Lesley gripped my arm. I feel Lesley hold my arm tighter as I tried to move to chase after her, but it was too late. She was gone. Probably up to her room.

“We kissed Lesley and it’s only because I was in a vulnerable state.” I barked “You don’t mean anything to me, and if you continue to act like this I will make sure I find valid reasons to banish you!”

She jumped back and whimpered, “But Zane, I really like you.”

“Lesley, everyone in the pack is well aware that I am waiting for my mate.” I kissed Alice and almost went all the way until there was a knock at the door. But I have been drawn to those beautiful violet eyes since I was little. I just never made it known to anyone.

“You can’t just give me a try? At least until your birthday?” She says slightly squeaky

“No now get away from me.” I need to find Alice. She let out an ear piercing screech as I walked out of the rec and check every open room on the first floor. It took a good 30 to 40 minutes checking the whole first floor. I decided to call Rj to see if he talked to her or bumped into her while she was heading up. If she took the elevator he wouldn’t have seen her at all.

“Hey” he answered in a hushed tone

“Hey, did I interrupt anything?” I asked

“Nah, what’s up?” He questioned

“Lesley said some dumb sh*t about two nights ago in front of Alice and she took off. I didn’t expect her to react the way she did, or show that she even cared.”

“We all know how it is between you two even if you don’t notice it yourselves. No it isn’t like Alice to show that she cares about a random hook up between to people but, she hates Lesley and wants to rip her throat out and she’s secretly in love with you. And I’m not trying to freak you out or make you feel bad but dude, you got some serious explaining to do.” He opened up and shared some deep stuff. I knew him and Alice were close, just didn’t know they were that close.

“I know man. I don’t know what to do. It was a kiss, I was drinking and missed her. I used to always go with them. This is the longest we’ve been apart. I need to see her so if you know where she is I’d appreciate it” I begged

He huffed as he replied “she’s in my room, sleeping on my couch.”

“Thanks man!” I say excitedly as I hung up. I knew he just sort of betrayed her so I’ll have to make it up to both of them.

I took a deep breath in and I walked up to his door and knocked lightly trying not to wake her up. Rj unlocked the door and let me in to grab her. As I lifted her up she stiffened and then relaxed against my chest. Rj draped the blanket over her and handed me her phone and slippers. I thanked him and quietly left his room went up the stairs to her room and took the key from the back of her phone and opened her door. Her room is dark gray like her hair with lilac accent matching her eyes perfectly. Her blanket is black with lilacs cascading down it. Really beautiful just like her. As I walked in the room she opened her eyes and had me put her down. I knew I had some explaining to do.

Alice’s POV

I woke up smelling apple pie. I immediately opened my eyes to the handsome boy who hurt me. I don’t think he did it on purpose but, really? Lesley? That stung. I made him put me down. I put my slippers by the end of the bed and my phone on the wireless charger on my nightstand and placed my key next to it. I studied him. Dark brown chocolatey hair that was longer on top and shorter on the sides like all the boys on my t****k for you page and bright green eyes. He had a really nice jaw line and looked super upset at the moment.

“Are you okay?” I asked breaking the uncomfortable silence between us.

“No, are you okay? I know it wasn’t easy hearing I kissed her. I was drunk and she took advantage but I pushed her away. I even went up to my office and locked the door to get away from her.” He replied quickly as if her thought I’d cut him off.

I took a deep breath and let it out before I replied, “ Zane, you don’t owe me an explanation and I know I really don’t have a right to be upset but it stung. I really can’t stand her. I already feel shitty for taking your first kiss from your true mate, not that you are really looking for her when you turn 18 but, I know you wanted to be pure just for her in respect.”

“I don’t regret anything that happened between us and I’m sure my true mate will understand. And as much as it hurts me to say this, I know it’ll hurt you too, once we both meet our true mate, our feelings will disappear and we won’t matter to each other on that level anymore. We will be so blinded by our mate bond and we will be just as close of friends without the lust.” He says with hurt in his eyes.

The impact of that statement made me back up and sit on my bed. This conversation was getting really serious really quickly. I needed to cut the tension and save this for another day.

“I understand, so let’s just call it a night. I’ll see you at training in a few hours.” I say blinking tears away and getting under my covers.

“Okay little one.” And with that he walked out my door.

I woke up the next morning getting a black sports bra on, some black work out leggings, black socks, and a pair of high top chucks on. I went into the kitchen and greeted Mrs. Allen the head kitchen omega and grabbed a water and sprinted out the door. Alpha Mark and Luna Jane were outside which is rare, I wonder what’s going on.

“We are here to over watch today’s training session. We want to see how well our pack is trained and see if Rj can lead you all as our future gamma.” Alpha Mark says with dominance.

“Yes alpha!” We all reply in unison

Our pack is big on being stronger and better beings. As much as we want to be strong we also radiate peace and have come to make peace with a lot of other packs and create pacts with them. Plus our land was tranquil and beautiful and radiated peace.

Rj has us in groups and would alternate work outs. We all started at one station and switched to another after 10 minutes. There was sparing, sprints, pull ups, push-ups, ropes, and a 2 mile run. It kept us moving and kept a good pace out of us all. Tomorrow would be sparing, using hanging punching bags and free standing bags.

“ALLIIIICCEEEE!” I hear the ugliest shriek in my life making me wince and roll my eyes. At this point all eyes were on me and b*tch of the year.

“Lesley I don’t have time for your antics.” I reply calmly showing my soon to be beta dominance.

“I Lesley Ginger Stont, challenge you Alice Parker, for your position of beta!”

My jaw drops and there were gasps coming from every angle.

“Alpha Mark, can she do this? I thought I had to officially have the title for a challenge.”

“You are in line to be beta and it has been approved by the elders. Let me mind link one to see if we have to wait.” And with that his eyes white over as he mind links. “Ah yes, you are able to be challenged and if you accept, the challenge with take place here on the training grounds tomorrow morning at sunrise.” He stated flatly

I look at Rj and he’s beaming and putting a thumbs up. I giggle knowing I’ll be fine. Zane looks indifferent.

I make eye contact with him then look back at Lesley “I Alice Mae Parker, accept your challenge.”

“Okay, we will meet here at 7am. Girls get some rest.” With that Alpha Mark leaves and heads back to the pack house with Luna Jane.

I follow suit so I can take a shower and eat breakfast. After our showers, the current betas gammas and future betas and gammas, alpha, Luna and Zane all pile into the pack house dinning room to eat. I was quiet, while Rj Zane and Alpha Mark talked. Zane has been ignoring me. I wonder what changed but then again, I’m not gonna worry. If he wanted me to know I would. I finished my food and excused myself. I ran up to my room to grab my fuzzy blanket and then to my personal kitchen for a drink and a snack and ran to the library. I grabbed a huge love sac and went to the very back and grabbed a few books to study for class and this way no one could find me or interrupt me. I even turned my phone on vibrate so no one would hear it ding. As I read and took notes I felt my phone vibrate a few times. I didn’t bother check it until 2 hours later. They were from Rj asking me if I was okay because I missed lunch and that Zane was acting weird. I replied stating I’m fine and that I didn’t know what was going on. I ended up picking up another book to study. Mid way I passed out.

When I woke up it was time for dinner so I made my way to the kitchen to grab a plate of food then to the dining hall to eat. I was trying to avoid everyone.

“Alice are you okay sweetheart?” Luna Jane asked with concern.

“I’m nervous for the challenge but that’ll be easy. I’m just upset it happened because she’s jealous over my friendship with Zane. But she did always say she wanted to be Luna. But I would be beta so I wouldn’t even try and take that spot as is. That’s for Zanes mate” I replied looking down

“Well I have seen you train and I believe you have it in you to keep your title. And she’s not going to be our next Luna. She doesn’t hold any of the qualities a future Luna holds. She shows no signs of being Zane’s mate either.” She winked at me saying the next part. Which confused me.

“I mean I guess you’re right. The next Luna would definitely not feel the need to challenge and take someone’s title just because. And she certainly wouldn’t feel threatened over her future Beta beings the mate bond we all know, once you are mated you don’t feel anything for anyone unless you reject or get rejected.” With that she pulled me in for a hug and gave me a knowing look and grab her plate.

I sensed him before he walked into the room. We both stiffened but I couldn’t bring myself to make eye contact. I wasn’t hurt by him kissing her, I was hurt that he lied and mainly felt embarrassed. We were or are best friends and he never told me anything which led to this whole fiasco. I picked my plate up and shuffled quickly by him. Instead of eating with everyone I went to the beta floor and ate at the breakfast bar in the beta personal kitchen to get some much needed space. The match is coming up and I need a clear head. So I decided to head to bed right after dinner to get enough rest for tomorrow morning.

I woke up and got ready with a black sorts bra with a grey band and matching black leggings with a grey waist band and some converse shoes. I pulled my hair into high-ish pony tail and put contacts in, instead of my glasses. I looked in the mirror, I was ready to kick some ass!
