Chapter 1: The Awakening
Elena’s POV: The sound of footsteps echoed through the darkness, almost blinding my eardrums. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t speak. I couldn’t even breathe. The shadows were pressing in on me, suffocating me. I couldn’t see it, but I feel it. I was trapped. Somewhere cold. Somewhere... wrong. My heartbeat increased it’s pace faster. Each thud getting louder than the last, each breath becoming shorter, more desperate and gasping for air. Panic clawed at my chest, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t shake it. What happened? My thoughts were scrambled. It was all a blur. The last thing I remembered was— Footsteps. They were getting more closer now. More heavier. I strained my ears to listen, but the room became silent. I wasn’t alone. Was I? Until I felt it. Something wet and sticky was on my skin. My hands. My face. My clothes. Blood. “Elena…” The voice was smooth, low, almost too calm, as though it were trying to put me back to an even deeper sleep. But there was something in it. Something that made my spine freeze. I didn’t know why, but even in my state of panic, I knew I had to be careful. Don’t show weakness. I slowly opened my eyes, adjusting them to the dim light. Where am I? The stone walls were damp, covered in old cracks. A single flickering torch cast long shadows, distorting the shapes around me. It smelled like damp earth, mildew. The air felt thick—heavy with something unspeakable. Something wrong. A figure stood before me. Tall. Broad-shouldered. His eyes gleamed in the dark, almost as that of a cat glowing in the dark. I tried to make out his face, but it was hidden in the shadows. He wasn’t human. No. There was something off about him. “Elena,” he repeated; his voice switched to being cold now. “You’ve been asleep for a while.” I tried to speak, but my throat felt dry, like sandpaper had scraped the insides. I swallowed hard. “What… what happened?” He didn’t answer. Instead, his lips curled into a smirk. “You don’t need to know. Not yet.” I flinched a little aback as he stepped closer, a rush of cold air following him. My heart hammered in my chest. Something was wrong with him. His presence was too overpowering. Dangerous. He reached out, brushing a strand of my hair behind my ear, but the touch was far too intimate for someone who had just shown up. I recoiled, but he didn’t seem to care. “You’ve been brought here for a reason,” he said softly. “But if you want to survive… you’re going to have to prove it to yourself and especially to everyone here.” Before I could ask him anything, the door behind him slammed open. More figures entered. One by one, they stepped into the room—six of them, all strong, all watching me like I was nothing but a prey. My breath caught in my throat. The man who had spoken earlier—the one who seemed to control everything—turned to them and nodded. “Elena, meet your new classmates,” he said, his voice dripping with mockery. At least so I thought. “You’ll all be learning together.” My body went rigid. Classmates? I don’t remember being in school. I wasn’t supposed to be here. This wasn’t a place for anyone like me. I can’t even afford it. The tall man who had been in the front stepped forward. His face was sharp, cold, and calculating. His eyes locked onto mine. I felt a chill run through me. “Take her to the cell,” he ordered, voice sharp as a whip. The others didn’t wait. They closed in on me. The man’s grip on my arm was like iron—too tight. I couldn’t pull away. My muscles screamed, but my body didn’t obey. I was dragged across the room and out the door. I wanted to scream. To fight. But there were no words. No sound. Only the blood pounding in my ears. The hallway stretched endlessly in front of me, walls closing in. The figures ahead of me moved like shadows—silent, calculating. My breath became faster. My body was shaking. I was going to die here. Was I? The man in front of me grinned again, this time with a dark, dangerous smile. “You don’t get it, do you? You’ll die if you don’t make it. You’ll die if you don’t learn.” The others laughed. Low, mocking, like they had heard this before. Like it didn’t even matter. The door at the end of the hall was slowly coming into view ahead. Behind it, there was nothing but darkness. I felt the cold seep into my skin. This was no academy. This was a prison. As they reached the door, I dug my heels into the ground, trying to stop myself from moving. The man behind me yanked me forward. “No,” I whispered, but the words were empty. No one cared. No one would care. The door opened. A small room welcomed them. It was bare—cold metal walls, no windows, just a single bed in the corner. A cot. I was being thrown into a cell. I didn’t need to be told. It was obvious. My knees buckled, and I fell to the ground. I could feel the tears burning in my eyes as they fell rigorously. Is it okay for them to see me cry? I won’t cry. I won’t let them see. The man who had been leading me turned to the others. “This is where she’ll stay for now. She’ll learn soon enough what this place is really about.” His voice echoed in the empty room, cold and menacing. “But if she doesn’t make it... well, I’ll leave that up to you.” He walked away without another word. I was left alone in the darkness. I curled into myself on the cold, hard floor, my body trembling from fear and exhaustion. My chest hurt. I wanted to scream, but there was no one to hear me. No one to save me. I was alone. So is this what fear feels like?
