Chapter 1:The night he rejected me.
The night I met my mate was supposed to be the happiest night of my life.
Instead, it became the night everything I believed about myself began to fall apart.
I stood beneath the silver moonlight, surrounded by hundreds of members of the Silver Moon Pack, trying desperately to calm my racing heart.
Tonight was my twentieth birthday.
For werewolves, twenty was an important age. It was the age when most wolves had already discovered their mates, and tonight, during the pack's annual Moon Ceremony, everyone who had reached the right age was given the chance to recognize their destined partner.
I'd dreamed about this moment since I was a child.
I imagined looking across a crowded room and suddenly knowing.
That's him.
I imagined my wolf jumping with excitement.
I imagined someone choosing me without hesitation.
"You're doing it again."
I turned toward my best friend, Mira.
"Doing what?"
"Overthinking."
She smiled and nudged my shoulder.
"You've been staring at the crowd like you're about to face an execution."
I laughed nervously.
"I'm just scared."
"Of finding your mate?"
"Of not finding him."
Mira rolled her eyes.
"Aria, you're beautiful, kind, and probably the most stubborn person I've ever met. If your mate doesn't recognize your worth, that's his problem."
I smiled.
"Easy for you to say."
"Exactly. So stop worrying."
I tried.
I really did.
But then the atmosphere suddenly changed.
The music stopped.
Conversations died down.
One by one, people turned toward the entrance of the clearing.
My stomach tightened.
A group of guards appeared first.
Then he walked through them.
Alpha Kael.
I'd seen him before, but never this close.
He was the Alpha of the Nightfang Pack, one of the strongest packs in the region. He was known for being powerful, disciplined, and almost impossible to read.
The moment my eyes landed on him, something inside me shifted.
My wolf woke.
A strange warmth spread through my chest.
Then I smelled him.
Pine.
Rain.
And something I couldn't explain.
My breath caught.
My wolf suddenly became frantic.
Mate.
I froze.
No.
My heart began pounding.
No way.
Kael stopped.
His gaze moved across the crowd until it found mine.
The instant our eyes met, everything else disappeared.
The music.
The people.
The moonlight.
All of it blurred into the background.
There was only him.
And the certainty inside me.
He is my mate.
A smile slowly appeared on my face.
After years of wondering, waiting, and hoping, I had finally found him.
I expected him to smile.
Instead, Kael's expression became strangely tense.
He looked almost shocked.
Then he started walking toward me.
People moved aside as he approached.
My hands trembled.
Mira whispered, "Aria..."
"I know."
Kael stopped in front of me.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he said my name.
"Aria."
Hearing it from him made my heart race even faster.
"You're my mate," I whispered.
His jaw tightened.
"I know."
My smile widened.
"So that means—"
"No."
I stopped.
The word was so cold that I almost wondered if I'd heard him correctly.
"What?"
Kael looked directly into my eyes.
"I reject you."
The world went silent.
I stared at him.
My mind refused to understand.
"You're... rejecting me?"
"I am."
A murmur spread through the crowd.
My wolf whimpered.
Pain shot through me, but I forced myself to stay standing.
"Why?"
Kael's expression didn't change.
"You don't belong beside me."
My throat tightened.
"What does that even mean?"
"It means you should forget that we're mates."
I shook my head.
"You can't just say that."
"I can."
His voice was firm.
"You're the Alpha," I whispered. "I'm your mate."
"That doesn't change my decision."
I looked around.
Everyone was watching us.
Some people looked shocked.
Others were whispering.
I felt exposed.
Humiliated.
But more than anything, I was confused.
"What did I do?"
For the first time, something flickered across Kael's face.
Regret.
It disappeared almost immediately.
"You didn't do anything."
"Then why?"
He looked away.
"Because this can never happen."
I swallowed hard.
"Why?"
Kael's eyes returned to mine.
There was something frightening in them now.
Something he didn't want me to understand.
"You don't know what you are."
My heart skipped.
"What does that mean?"
He didn't answer.
He simply turned away.
"Kael!"
He stopped.
I wanted to run after him.
I wanted to demand an explanation.
But my pride wouldn't let me.
So I stood there and watched the man fate had chosen for me walk away as though I meant nothing.
Mira immediately came to my side.
"Aria..."
"I'm fine."
"You don't have to pretend."
"I'm fine."
I wasn't.
I could feel tears threatening to fall, but I refused to cry in front of everyone.
I turned and walked toward the forest.
The moment I reached the trees, I broke into a run.
I didn't stop until the sounds of the celebration disappeared.
I leaned against a tree, breathing heavily.
"Why?"
My voice cracked.
"Why would you reject me?"
My wolf offered nothing except a deep ache.
I looked up at the moon.
I'd spent years believing that finding my mate would finally make me feel like I belonged.
Instead, I felt more alone than ever.
Then my wrist began to burn.
I gasped.
"What is happening?"
I pulled back my sleeve.
A faint silver mark sat on the inside of my wrist.
I'd had it for as long as I could remember.
My mother had always told me it was nothing more than a strange birthmark.
But tonight, it was glowing.
The silver light grew brighter.
I stepped backward.
"What's happening to me?"
Suddenly, the forest became completely silent.
No insects.
No birds.
Not even the wind.
Then I heard footsteps.
I spun around.
An old woman stepped out from behind the trees.
I recognized her immediately.
Madam Elin.
She was one of the oldest members of the pack, and everyone said she knew more about werewolf history than anyone alive.
Her eyes immediately fell on my wrist.
Her face went pale.
"Where did you get that?"
I stared at her.
"I was born with it."
She stepped closer.
"No..."
"What?"
She reached for my wrist but stopped before touching it.
"That mark should not exist."
I frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
She looked toward the direction of the pack.
Then back at me.
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
"You need to leave."
My heart raced.
"Leave? Why?"
"Before they find out."
"Who?"
She didn't answer.
"Madam Elin, you're scaring me."
She finally looked directly into my eyes.
"You were never supposed to be here."
My stomach dropped.
"What?"
She took a shaky breath.
"Your parents didn't tell you the truth."
I stared at her.
"My parents?"
"Your mother and father weren't who you thought they were."
I shook my head.
"That's impossible. My parents died when I was young."
"Exactly."
Her voice trembled.
"They died protecting a secret."
I looked down at my glowing wrist.
"What secret?"
Before she could answer, a powerful howl echoed through the forest.
Madam Elin's face changed.
"They've found us."
"Who?"
She grabbed my hand.
"Run."
I pulled away.
"I'm not going anywhere until you tell me what's happening."
Her eyes filled with fear.
"Aria, listen to me. The Alpha must not know the truth."
My heart stopped.
"Kael?"
She nodded.
"Especially him."
I stared at her in disbelief.
"But why?"
She looked at the glowing mark on my wrist one final time.
Then she whispered words that changed everything.
"Because the girl the Alpha just rejected isn't an ordinary wolf."
I couldn't breathe.
"What am I?"
Madam Elin opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, another voice came from the darkness.
"That's what I'd like to know."
We both turned.
A tall figure stood between the trees.
And even in the darkness, I recognized him.
Alpha Kael.
His eyes were fixed on my glowing wrist.
For the first time that night, he looked genuinely afraid.
"Aria," he said quietly.
I stepped backward.
"Why are you here?"
Kael didn't answer.
His gaze remained on the mark.
Then his face went completely pale.
"You weren't supposed to awaken."
My heart pounded.
"Awaken what?"
Kael looked at me.
And this time, there was no coldness in his eyes.
Only fear.
"Your bloodline."
The forest seemed to freeze around us.
And suddenly, I understood one thing.
Kael hadn't rejected me because he didn't want me.
He had rejected me because he was afraid of what I would become.
