Chapter 28With a soft groan, Thoth opened his eyes, unsure of what he might see, then gave a sigh of relief. We made it. The subterranean roof-sky of the colony was overhead, and he could hear the murmur of voices. Turning his head slightly, Thoth saw Juniper tending to Montreal. “You just rest, let that sap do its job. It may leave some scarring, but it’ll stop infection and encourage healing.” Juniper shifted and looked toward Thoth, and a smile lit his face. “You’re awake. At last.” He scurried over to Thoth and kissed him softly. “You had me worried.” “Sorry, my love.” Thoth stroked Juniper’s cheek, surprised at how shaky his hand was. “I overexerted myself. Tried to keep time frozen a little too long. But I wasn’t sure how fast we’d make it here and I didn’t want to lose Montreal.”
